I read that "Naming-System will work like in StarCraft 2. You have a name and an ID," but I have never played Starcraft 2 and don't understand what this means.
1. Can you still name your character virtually whatever you want, like it was in Diablo 2?
2. If so, is your character name unique to only you?

This is how I am thinking naming will work based on the one question/answer that we saw from the press event. It would be great if we could get some official clarification on this...
1. You install Diablo 3 and when starting the game for the first time you are required to create a Diablo 3 account on Battle.net
2. When creating the Diablo 3 account you must assign an account name. For example, Alpha1.
3. Now that you're in the game you create your character(s) and can assign each of them a unique name. For example, you could have 3 characters, one named Bravo5, one named Charlie7, and one named Delta8.
4. You choose a character to play the game with, lets say Bravo5.
5. When you are logged in what will be shown as your name across Battle.net and on the screen above your character will be your account name, not your specific character's name. So, in this example although you are playing the game with Bravo5 everyone will see your name as Alpha1 and your charcter's name essentially also becomes Alpha1 because that is your account name.
6. I also think that the account name is unique to you, but different accounts can have the same character names as the actual character names themselves will not be displayed across Battle.net.
This is at least what I got out of the answer given at the press event, but I too have not yet played SC2 so I don't really know how that system works. Again, I would like to see some confirmation on this...Bashiok maybe?
i dont think anything has been released about this subject yet
Sixen did ask about it in the Q&A, but the answer wasn't overwhelmingly detailed:
Q: How does character naming work? Will names be unique? Will there be an identifier like was tagged on in SC2? I wasn’t really a fan of that because I was just Sixen##### and any douche could be Sixen##### just with different digits and you couldn’t really tell if we were different people.
A: We’re using the same system, so when you log in you’ll be displayed more at your battle.net level, so if you’re RealID, you’ll be displayed there and then your character names are not. They’re only unique on your account, so you can not have three guys named Sixen on your account, but you could always have your name relative to others.

It's a shame that we won't be able to have names be unique to our characters. Does anyone know what determines the id numbers that are attached to the name?
