*shrug* Who knows. Maybe Inferno has the same drops as Hell, it's just harder. Then you wouldn't even have the benefit of better gear to help you. But I guess that would pretty much make doing Inferno useless for anything but having it displayed under your banner.
Blizz is not responding on the BNet forums, which makes me think that it really is a 4th difficulty and they didn't mean for this to slip out just yet.
...skips nightmare mode. There's no reference for what the two modes--Hell and Inferno--are harder than. It could be that they changed the name of Nightmare, we don't know.
The images we have seen might have been taken in an older build. Things could have been renamed.
Personally? Yes, I agree that it's probably another endgame challenge. But that does not mean that we can take this as fact simply because we want it to be true. Maybe there's a fudge cake in front of me because I want it to be there. After all, I'm hungry. Maybe because I'm hungry the cake exists.
Would be pretty intense to see that go down. Can't imagine the gear you will find there though.
It could simply be that the gear is spread out over this new difficulty (assuming it exists). So, there's a shallower slope to the hypothetical gear drop graph over four acts.
Either that or there is a greater chance of finding high tier or legendary items in that mode. Either way, you'll be getting good stuff I imagine.
This is totally off topic, but when I read inferno I had flashbacks of playing Cinder on Killer Instinct for SNES.
On topic, Hell difficulty never failed to whoop my ass. So I'd be surprised to see D3 come out with four difficulties right off the bat. I think it could be something to look into for future expansions though, if hell isn't hellish enough, which I highly doubt.
It's probably just the hardcore name for hell. Why would they hide such an important detail from the fansite event?
Nightmare is still called Nightmare in HC, as you can see in my original post. It would be odd for them to change the name of Hell but not any other difficulty. Not to mention the fact that it could possibly confuse some players. Not saying you're wrong, because no one knows, but I do believe it's more likely to be a fourth difficulty.
Also an interesting quote from this interview by inDiablo.de:
Q: Will there be high level endgame content for your character once you finished the story like the Hellfire Quest in Diablo 2?
A: We don't have specific plans that we are talking about yet, but we are definitely focusing on additional content for the endgame. We want to make sure that people who have reached the maximum level still have a lot of fun stuff to do. So we will have a lot of stuff to talk about but nothing specific yet.
I'm also thinking Inferno just means Nightmare here.
If it was a new difficulty it'd be mentioned before.
I also don't see a coherent succession in Hell>Nightmare>Inferno.
its been mentioned by a blue post
quoted:You'll have access to all the systems by the end of Normal, but that doesn't mean you're going to scratch the surface with them. You'll be leveling your artisans, teaching them to make new items, finding higher quality runes, finding higher quality gems, combining gems, finding loot in Nightmare that doesn't drop in Normal, finding loot in Hell that doesn't drop in Nightmare, etc. and really continuing to max out use of each of the available power adjustments. Plus the need to really tighten up builds
mentions normal nm and hell, so they exist, thus proving inferno is somthing different

Uh...these images were released less than 18 hours ago.
And how long ago did they create the press images for the press kit that was handed out to each site? The sites didn't take their own pictures. They were given pictures, as far as I understand how the press kit works. They could have been from a month ago.
And do you see Inferno mode in any of the pictures? Do you?
I'm not saying you're wrong, and I'm not saying I don't want it to exist, but we're filling in blanks with what we want to be true. It hasn't been confirmed yet. We have no context.
Your right... in one of the AH pictures you can see the posted dates some say like 4/23/11, 4/03/11 some in march.

Why would it be in that order?
From the interview i get the feeling that normal/NM isnt that big of a challenge, but to be able to survive in hell and inferno you need to bring your A game.
I personally love the idea of a 4th difficulty that pretty much requires a geared 60 to have a chance to make it. In addition I hope they don't add any items better than what you get in Hell diff. Maybe improve the drop rate for better gear, but finishing Inferno mode takes serious gear and serious skill to finish. A little something to seperate the elites from the casuals. If nothing else just for the braggin rights!
It does indeed sound exciting and promising, It would be good if it was just extremely difficult with higher chance of rewards, and even possibly special dungeon/bosses that with similarities to Uber Tristram, but even more would be one epic experience
come on they can think of a better name then that... it's like you go to nightmare uh oh that sounds bad... then you end up in HELL damn this must be really hard... then... ....inferno? the heck, everything is on fire i guess? or they just make you eat alot of chilis
call it ...... friggin' masochist or "torture" mode or something... you know make it sound like something that makes you think of it being hellaciously hard... and painful
Maybe there would be a special version of items that can only be obtain i inferno, would be cool
Kind of like heroic version of raid items in WoW.
If it had new or improved items then it would be just another difficulty level that everyone would feel they need to finish to beat the game. I'd prefer to have 'inferno' difficulty be insanely stooopid hard for serious Diablo nuts only, but the game technically 'ends' with Hell.
A insane difficulty level more for the challenge and the braggin rights than anything else. Like I said, maybe a higher drop rate/percentage for Hell diff items, but no new/improved items that would pretty much force people to do it.
Maybe they would make inferno so that it's so difficult, you can only beat it with a team, thus forcing players team-up. This is very exciting if true, great find OP. I'd imagine this difficulty is where you'd find the best of the best gear, runes, gems, etc. Lets keep our fingers crossed on some good news for a change.

I strongly disagree with tuning it to require a team - that is not Diablo. If you are in a team it should be tuned for a team if you are solo it should be tuned for solo - that is Diablo.
I was just having doubts about the longevity in this game beyond hell difficulty. In D2 the only option was Baal/Meph runs or Cow runs. Having an entire difficulty level for end-game content sounds a lot more interesting

this would have been true if this screenshot didn't exist

Something like creatures in Hell range from 45-59 and then everything in Inferno will be 60.
