I was incredibly worried when video the programmer responsible for the AI of the monsters talked about how the monsters would be "smarter" at blizzcon 2010 yet he also said that you would feel powerful at the same time. In the "Diablo III: Crafting Sanctuary 3/4 - Blizzcon 2010" video he describes how while before the smart AI the Demon hunter would try to kite them and (due to what looked like poor kitting skills in the previous video 2/4) fail miserably. According to them smart AI seems to make the game easier when i was expecting more of a challenge. The Delays, taunts, and miss steps by the AI certainly give the monster some character but what it comes down to is after all the changes to the AI the Demon hunter was in to way shape or form in any danger during that skirmish. This kind of "nerf" does indeed make you feel powerful but does not create the sense of fear they said they wanted to take back from the original diablo. What do you think? Please enlighten me if I am wrong.
Three fallen shouldn't be able to kill you at any level.
The reason for all those delays and taunts is because you're fighting like 50 fallen at a time. Because they move in such big groups, they need to be manageable.
For tougher enemies, they attack you more directly and intelligently, because there are fewer of them and it's more reasonable for them to be challenging. The challenge of fighting fallen is that there's LOTS of them, and they revive.
fast gameplay that requires speed (like using your escape ability at just the right time to grab that orb) is more the focus than it was in d2 where all that was needed was to run in circles making a ball of enemies (cows) and shooting before the missiles reach you. This is more difficult with the chaotic movements of the "smarter" ai, and require more on the spot decisions. This was still the case in d2 when it came to enemies like shamans and wisps but to a much lesser degree. This is why being able to pick out a familiar enemy with just a glance is such an important part of d3's production.
cuz computers are as dum as it gets if u ask me ;D
tell that to the computer chess game, and see who wins
Yeah when I first heard about the AI im thinking AI using battle tactics, strategies etc, and if you just run in swords swinging ( or crossbows a blazing) you would get pwnd, that you would need to think about your strategy, and assess the situation a little more, maybe we will see this when fighting some kinds of armies (trained evil soldiers etc), maybe fallen/zombies etc will not have that smart of AI.
Lol u guys, don't get me wrong, computers cant "think" they can only process tasks. Being smart does involve thinking and a computers can only "create" stuff they are programmed to create, and there's no such function as "imagination" and whatnot. i do know companies such as IBM are trying to make AI that can process patterns but i don't think we can see any "smart" ai at all... though it always depends how u define word "smart"
EDIT: i rly love the efford blizz put into its AI though... as a biginer programmer its such a time consuming task

Let's just say the developers programmed it to behave in a "smart" way. The AI itself might not be "smart", but that's not what they mean when they say it :).
And yeah I can imagine creating a good AI is probably some of the most difficult stuff to deal with when it comes to programming.
I see your guys point. I really do hope it will be as hard as you all say. To be honest I only played the the first daiblo for a few days. That was back when i just started speaking full sentences and got backhanded when my parents found out I was playing on my dads acount. Been a fan of the game ever since
Giving AI delays and the like are something I view as behaviors, and a game feels pretty bland if every enemy is coming in your direction like a magnet at the same speed. Trust me, I've played games designed like this (yes, they exist), they're booooooooooring. This was this one Diablo clone in fact, it had all sorts of spiders and crap and the moment you enter the room they all magnetised towards you, it was really stupid, every fight was exactly the same.
I don't know what they mean by "smarter", though. AI of this level was present since at least 1994 with games like DooM and most likely even earlier. Hell, they're present in both Diablo 1 and 2. Nothing to see here.

Did you not see the original video? The one where there are
Archers::::Blockers/melee with shields:::::You
So you have to stun the blockers, and either attack them, or stun the blockers, kill the archers, then kill the melee's.
It's just a simply one, but for example, skeletons being used as cannon fodder so a skeletal mage can cast spells on you, a spellcaster casting a wall to block your escape path and be trapped with enemies etc. etc.
Im sure when they say smart they mean more fluid and natural acting. Nothings worse than seeing a demon exhibit mechanical behaviors, or even worse, one that is totally random and does not make sense at all.

That's like saying a brain is dumb. A computer just follows the rules that the humans set up for it.
The "smart" in the AI relates to the way the programmers made the AI interact in a "smarter" fashion. Just another way of saying they improved the AI.
Plus it looks cool.

These behaviors are considered to be more realistic than just having the monster run straight at you no matter what.
If you're worried about the game being too easy, don't be. Hell will be a real challenge.
