I'm unclear on the rune system and if there are better posts out there, than by all means - direct me to them. I didn't find any after a quick search and I'm trying to distract myself from working <_<
So I get there are the five colors of runes. I get that each one effects a spell in different ways. I get that there have been mentions/reveals of runes like multi-strike, power, etc. What I don't get, is how the two mix.
Does the color system indicate the type effect - like Indigo is for multistrike, obsidian is for power? Or is it more in the realm of something like Golden Rune of Multistrike drops and then shortly there after the Golden Rune of Power finds it way into your hands as well? I know they have levels depending on the difficulty system you are in - just don't get how they mix.
Mostly, what maka said, but also, they were given the color names because it gave them more freedom, the power/multistrike names were removed and now they can do all of those things (though only one effect per rune) or do crazy things, and if you build a power character with all of the power like effects, you may not be able to do that with just one color rune.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
EDIT: I'll keep my first post intact as a lesson for myself to never doubt Dfans to come up with the best quality news available lol..
Anway, here is the better quality video of Blizzcon, I'll set the video to start at 41:47 when they begin talking about Skill Runes. The voice is still off sync though.. lol
Start the video at 41:47 to skip to the Skill Runes topic.
PS. If you're interested in watching all 8 videos of the D3 panel, I'd head over to Diablo3Inc on yourtube and do it there. The video is only 360p compared to the 480p above but the audio is in sync.
Psh! Gotta rep the DFans YouTube! 720p and properly sync'd sound!
Here ya go bud, if you'd like some videos along with your text 411 here's some Blizzcon footage explaining everything ya need to know.. Only two things to note about the videos.. A. These are the best looking videos of the D3 panel Blizzcon around.. B. The audio is off sync by about 4 seconds from the video.. lol
Can't bake your cake and eat it to right?

While the other videos on Blizzcon are indeed 720p, the video on topic of this thread is only 360p, though it does look better when the video's I linked I'll admit. Also, the audio is still off sync. So I give you 6/10th the credit for correcting me as I did before I discovered all this

Thank you all for the links and videos. I had read our Wiki, I was mainly curious how they were going to be labeled and if each color rune would have the ability to have different functions.
Winged - thanks, I appreciate the vids. Will give me something to do, besides work
Each type of rune will have a different effect on each skill it is placed in. The higher ranking ones will just amplify that same effect.
Example:
Crimson Rune - place in hydra to create a short-ranged cold hydra.
Crimson Rune rank 7 - Adds cold duration and range of frost bolt
Crimson Rune - Place in plague of toads to create fiery toads
Crimson Rune rank 7 - increases fire damage by toads
So, the effect can be different depending on what skill it is in. Originally, the skillrunes were called things like hydra that added a multiple strike to almost every skill it was in. This was changed to allow more variations of skills.
As far as labeling them, they will each have their own unique look and color based on the rune. Crimson = red, golden = gold so on and so on. For each rank there will be a spheres around it to distinguish by appearance.

Don't let the names of the runes throw your head into a tizzy. The previous set of names were far too static of a concept for ideas they had yet to come up with so they simply renamed them to their literal colors to give them the freedom to put whatever they wanted wherever they so chose.

That was essentially what I was asking - is each color of rune known to do something specific in its field? So for instance Crimson runes always add a multi-strike to whatever spell they attached to (in the unique way of that particular spell) and Golden runes always add more damage. As an example; if I want a certain spell to have more damage, I need to find a Golden rune.
Well earlier, as mentioned, the rune names were much more self explanatory. But that also made it so that some effects didn't fit anywhere under that naming scheme. So they made them golden, crimson, alabaster, etc to allow them to add more crazy effects that didn't fit under names like power, multistrike, etc. So to answer your question, no, a crimson rune will not always add fire damage, and a golden rune won't add the same effect across multiple skills. That being said, certain effects do usually fall under a certain rune (ie fire damage is usually crimson), but again, that doesn't meant that crimson is always fire damage. Sorry if that got a bit confusing...
What I'm not quite sure of, is when they say there are 19 billion combinations of skills per class. Is this with the runes? If so then there aren't really 7 combinations of runes are there? Everyone will opt for the highest rune to socket in their skill won't they? Why would you bother using ranks 1-7 when you have a rank 8 rune?
It's really just a hype number. While it's true, and interesting, a fraction of those combinations will be useful in game play. How they came to the 96 billion number is counting every possible combination of rune type, rune level, to skill, and skill level.
It's the same concept of how a 3 number password can have thousands of combinations, or a 4 letter password can have millions.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
Well the thing is that, if that number is accurate, then even if 99% of the builds are useless we'd still have 970 million viable builds. Even if only a percent of those are viable, we still get 970,000 builds. So in the end we'll probably be seeing a huge range of builds.

Yeah I was never really impressed by that 84 billion number they continued to throw out there. The key is that they (developers) are really trying to keep customization at the forefront of this game. That, I am impressed by and grateful for.
Thanks Jackzor too for the bit of clarification on the runes. I was assuming that was the case, but I thought making a post about it might help get some clarification and help others who may be lurking by for information now that the Beta is on the horizon.
I'm very interested to see the rune system in play, but I am starting to wonder how putting together your loot Christmas list is going to play out in the beginning of the game until all effects are known. A few years from now a player can go to the wiki or other fun sites that will give comprehensive break downs of all the runes, spell effects, etc. So then a player can say "I really want that effect for my Meteor spell, so I need to go get X rune for that." I have a feeling that runes will be hard items to find on the trading system as well - at least for the first few months.
I sure hope so, they've put so much effort into giving each rune in each skill a separate animation, on top of balancing (Which surely will still be happening through the Beta and even release) I expect to see tons and tons of builds. That's the main reason I expect D3 to have a 10 year plus life span. Between the massive content on release, and hopefully a few expansions it looks like it have the potential.
On a side note, I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED to see the different effects runes have on skills.. I've watched that stretch of Skill Runes in the Blizzcon video like 8 times since last night.. I can't even pick a favorite rune-skill variation..

Definitely. I have no interest in rolling a WD - but that giant freaking frog is hilarious and I may have to make one just for that.
Right? Some of these skills look so awesome I might have to try all the classes.. Normally I stick to 2 classes at most and master them, which in D3 will be the Barb and Monk. After watching those videos again though, the Hydras look so freakin awesome, and the WD seems to have all around crazy rune variations.. An all this isn't even considering the gear or anything.. This game gets me excited for each of it's features all over again every time I see them, it's a never ending cycle!

Matters what rune it is, and what skill. One rune in one skill can completely change your build and play style. Take the WD's plague of toads, put an Indigo rune in it and now it play completely different.

If 2 players have the exact same setup except for 1 or 2 runes, I really wouldn't consider them 2 different builds.
Yea, but you gotta imagine that a good number of those small differences would be covered if you only take a percent of a percent of the total builds into account.
