I'm confident (whether I've read it or I'm clairvoyant) that the epic gear/weapon system will be BOP or BOE for most pieces. This forces a player to wear the best crafted gear possible and be alright. But to be great, they are going to have to go farm for epic drops. And you can't farm for epic drops, until you have the best crafted gear. And to get that, you need materials and skilled Artisans. And you guessed it - to get skilled Artisans you can either farm the materials yourself to build them up, or get some sort of help with that long process by selling items for gold, to purchase materials on the......AH.
At Blizzcon, Jay Wilson said there are no BoP items in Diablo 3. So I think AH will be fine as long as there are certain ultra hard to find items that no one will post on AH because of that high value. People will want to trade those items directly for another ultra hard to find item that they can use.

Very cool. I missed that bit about BOP items. I would hope that hard to find items would be a mini currency their own, but I can see someone trying to unload one on an AH system for a blizzallion gold. If gold really is the main currency, then I feel (given my WoW days) that everyone will pursue that. You can always buy what you want, rather than farming for it....
Auction House will be great, unfortunately people will hate on it just because it was a major part of WoW.
I really think it is the best/only system if you want a strong money based economy in Diablo 3 and I look foward to it.

Agreed. I don't understand why people have such animosity for the AH system, or any system for that matter from WoW. I get they want Diablo to be its own game - but how different can it be from some basic concepts of any system in any game?
The key thing to remember, to all you haters out there, is that it takes a while to build up money by playing the AH. You could probably get gear and money faster by actually playing the damn game unless you have start up cash, and if you do then you already played the game! This is true in WoW as well, in that month you could have just played the damn game and gotten nearly to max level, with a few thousand gold to spare. Maybe the AH is more efficient, but if you find that more fun than the game, that's your business.
Aside from which, when people are in the endgame, waiting on an AH trade isn't such a big deal, 'cause they're out leveling their artisans or doing PvP or whatever, not playing the story missions where they might desperately need new gear quickly.
My only real worry with the D3 economy is that gems will still rule over cash, mainly because they have use and can be traded while still being useful, a little like SOJs.
But in terms of items? There's going to be BOE (bind on equip) and BOP (pickup) stuff in D3 I believe. So you can't buy just anything in the AH--high end shit is still going to require playing.

Enough gold will still buy you any gem. Thank god.
BoP items will only be maybe higher end stuff and quest items I think they said. More of stuff you're not meant to trade.

Thank you for this. The AH system will take a year or so to start to get to a place where people can make it the game itself, rather than out farming. It takes time for the economy to establish itself, for supply and demand to become a steady stream and for realistic prices to become absolute. With patch content and expansions, the AH system (if that's what they use) will get a chance for some fresh starts.
As to your worry about gems being over gold - I have to disagree. If gold is truly the economy and has weight to it (like WoW or at least more important than D2) than very few will trade high level gems for other high level gems or items. Don't forget - at the bottom of most of our grubby souls is someone who wants to amass money. With lots of money, you can buy anything you want, at your whim. The same for D3's economy will be true. Again, in my opinion.

That's me right there. =) I'm definitely going to play around with the AH and stockpile lots of gold. I never got max gold in WoW, but I almost always had thousands more than I needed just because I found it fun to build up more. On my main, I bought all the mounts, pets, and "special" items I could find. I never had enough consistent time to raid (I'm always on call with my job), so farming gold and buying stuff was like my "endgame" in WoW.

LOL! I did a little of both. Whenever new content came out, I stockpiled the cheap stuff from the AH and then sold it after patches for a boat load. Otherwise I was out farming for materials and new gears.

High end items -might- be Bind on EQUIP, nothing more.
