All right, this isnt a MAJOR topic but I have questioned it to my self on and off while reading and seeing videos about all the new characters in D3.
Okey, so here is my thought:
Barbarian (D2) = Barbarian (D3)
No question about it.. He have the same core.
But how about the other characters?
Amazon (D2) = a fourth of an Demon Hunter? (D3) Sorceress (D2) = a third of an Wizard (D3) Druid (D2) = a fourth of an ...Expansion-character? Assassin (D2) = a fourth of an Demon Hunter? (D3) + A third of an Monk? (D3) Necromancer (D2) = A fourth of an Demon Hunter? (D3) + A third of an Witchdoctor? (D3) Paladin (D2) = A third of an Monk? (D3)
Will you miss your favourite character genre and do you think they have killed some good ideas or perhaps made them better?
I feel that the classes are unique in their own way. I mean, sure, the Witch Doctor is a lot like the Necromancer and the Demon Hunter is a lot like the Assassin, but they do have their own separate charms to them. The Wizard is dealing with her own special brand of magic, the Monk is using more of his fists to deal out damage than the sword-wielding Paladin, and the Witch Doctor is dealing more with tribal magic than the Necromancer who dealt exclusively with "dark magic" and the undead.
I think, if you were to put the classes side by side with their "counterpart," you could point out some similarities, but I don't think there's enough there to constitute anything more than an influence. I think Blizzard tried their best to bring new ideas and concepts to the table and I think they've done a good job with that because the Monk, Wizard, and Witch Doctor are things that I never would have though would make it into the Diablo series and I appreciate the time and effort they put into making those classes what they are.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
I doubt that it is actually possible to come up with something truly original these days when it comes to character classes. No matter how you look at any given class in any given ARPG, they are in a way derived from some basic/previous archetype that they fulfill to an extent. Therefore Monk is definitely a part Paladin and a part Assassin, but together they create their own chemistry and mechanics that in the end produce quite different gameplay than the Paladin or the Assassin did in D2.
In answer to the question, I have played D2 for so long, years at a time without playing anything else, that I feel I have quite grown out of the game in the sense that I am ready to move on to something else without missing what was back in D2. I still occasionally grab D2 for a few hours to progress one of my many unfinished hybrid characters, but I think playing something fresh and new without a really strong resemblance to D2 character mechanics will be great. And if I feel the need for something nostalgic, I'll grab a D3 barb and whirlwind the crap out of someone.

Ok after all I've seen on the new classes I need to fix some of your D2 = D3 set ups.
#1. Assassin = Monk (check out the combos)
#2. Necromancer = just Witchdoctor
#3. Paladin = Monk (just barely though due to "holy magic")
Well... that's all I've got really.
But as other people have said in this thread, all of the characters have their fair share of differences. I wouldn't be surprised if I was a bit lost playing the Barbarian even though I've been playing him in D2 for god knows how long.

I think as far as archetypes go theres very little variation, but really its for a reason, as these archetypes have proven themselves. Especially for the vanilla game without expansions. I think they can go a bit more off the beaten path with xpac characters, as they've covered all the basic archetypes with the current classes. And as far as archetypal classes go, I think they did a good job with the ones in D3.
I believe the poitn here should be archetypes and not just names or similar looks. You have: Tank, Spellcaster, Summoner/suporting spells, light/fast fighter and a ranged.
I don't like saying WD = Necro, Barb = Barb, Sorc = Wizz, although its true. If you think in functionality you wont have the "DH = (1/3 Sin) + (2/3 Zon)" kind of mathematical aproach.
We have basic archetypes and lots of characteristcs to mess with, such as contraptions, auras, pets, vsual, shouts...
Will you miss your favourite character genre and do you think they have killed some good ideas or perhaps made them better?
In D2 I made few serious characters. 1 Throwing Barb (extremely fun! you should do it!), 1 Necro (Summon+ Corpse Explosion), 2 Paldins (Frost-Zeal and Hammer), and 7-9 Sorcs (most of them meteorbs). I guess I will do the same (proportions wise) with Barb (if I can throw stuff), WD, and mainly Wizz. Really don´t care about Monk, DH, as I never cared for any Sin, Zon, Druid. Let´s see what expansion brings...
Yea, he has auras and some skills that do damage while healing your party. Obviously the Assassin is the larger component because of the combo system. But there definitely is some Paladin influence in there. And again I'm sure everything will be considerably different.
Yeah, you guys understand what I was aiming for in this discussion.
It's hard to compare, and we SHOULDN'T actually to be honest.
But..
For example. If we live in the same world, there must be hybrids of skills and characters. So let say you know KARATE (in our world) and now your up for learning BOXING. Well Hurrah! You have created a new skill.
I guess Sanctuary could do this as well. Combine Assassin skills with Amazons Crossbow, Why not? Then you have a new style if it's a BIG change.
They might as well do a new character instead of having an Amazon that have the ability to kick or an Assassin that loves crossbows with flame arrow skills. That wouldnt be fun!
This is just thoughts. I love Blizzards characters and to be frank, I'm kinda tired on D2 characters as well.
I think when comparing D2 characters to D3 characters, it is more important to relate skill sets. So...
Barb = Barb - the only difference his the passives of D2 have turned into traits and the D3 barb will have new skills. But overall, the same.
Wizard = Sorceress - the only thing they added is arcane spells like time bubble. Hydras, meteors, blizzard.
Monk = Combat skills of assassin and holy/auras of pally
WD = curses, spells of Necro and Summons/spells of Druid (I say druid summon because the wd has mongrels = wolves and gargantuan = grizzly)
DH = bow skills of amazon and traps/shadow of assassin (although the DH doesn't actually have shadow skills but imbodies this idea)
The only skill set, aside from passives that turned into traits, is the druids shape shifting skills.

With the druid's elemental skills... but I never really counted that as a new skill tree. More like a gimped sorcerer with more chaotic spells. Oh and he had some physical damage added to the tornadoes.

Not just the tornadoes...50% of Elemental skills to be exact. Molten Boulder, Fissure, Volcano and Twister also deal physical damage.

My bad, I only ever made a werewolf druid.
@ Aever- I know exactly what you mean.. We need some sort of class inbetween the barb and the monk. Some alternative builds might be able to produce this class however.
From what I could read in the book of cain , all the old heroes got destroyed together with mount arreat when Tyreal blew up the world stone.
No, they didn't. We will most certainly see what happened to some of them in D3
And what's with bumping old topics?
Could you elaborate on that? You seem pretty sure, so I'm wondering if I missed something.
I based my previous post on whats in the spoiler tag below.
In the book of cain (page 127), the heroes are on the brink of death after defeating Baal. Tyreal comes in an destroys the world stone , making a cataclysmic explosion so big, mount arreat is gone.
After that no mention of the heroes occur. Of course this also means there is no mention of them dying specifically, but being near death and then the mountain you are in being blown up, seems unlikely for them to survive.
Uhm in Blizzcon they said about returning characters but then changed it (Ormus). And I think it was Jay that told us that old heroes could very much be returning, but there is no proof that they will yet. However in D3 beta lore they mention wirt and adria, so if NPC can return I do not see why not heroes shall return.
In datamining there is altso proof of Aresha returning (warrior lady in Act 3) and people talked about the necromanser hero being an NPC somewhere.
Reading this makes me feel like they are going to bring back the Necro for a D3 expansion just for the shock factor. That guy was just so damn popular and a badass in general. I believe you could havea WD and Necro fighting side by side, even if they are similar classes.
To most players, Druids felt like the odd man out. Not really sure why. I know I feel that he was, at least.
