While the gems are important, I can't imagine high-level gems are essentially (well, top gear is always essential for PvP). I imagine the highest level of gems to be about as rare as Lo-Zod runes so not everyone will have them.

I remember hear about 3 ways to upgrade gems, all of them involving the jeweler I think. Either way it will be a challenge to achieve the highest level gems, now I just wants to know all the possibilities of what they can do!!
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
I can only think of one way. Combining three of the lower level to one of the next grade. Just like D2. I, personally, do not recall hearing of any other way.
I think a better trade system will make it a lot easier to at least obtain the highest level of particular gems you want. So, if you get a level 12 sapphire, you can trade it easier for that lvl 12 ruby you need to get it to lvl 13.

I'm going to guess that as the game gets older and we see more patches, gems will be one of the more important item types, since we don't have jewels with random affixes and we don't have runes for runewords taking up all slots. So, I'm going to hoard them like shit.
Not that I hoard shit.
...
I collect PGems on my mules in D2 and trade them for HR's Or roll GC's.
Well we already know that they're going to provide a wide range of attributes, like cast speed and xp and gold gain. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are plenty of other things along those lines. Pretty much everything thats not elemental damage or stats (and maybe even stats) could be on gems. Life leech plox.

Its been said that hypothetically things like gold and magic find and xp gain could be used in a way where you trade one for the other in light amounts. It wouldn't be trading that stuff for character power though.
As I said it's probably going to be fairly heavily restricted to specific sources and amounts. As an example, completely hypothetical, let's say that the only magic find available is from placing a diamond gem in a head slot. It's useful because of the amount it provides, but maybe other gems in a head slot provide things like bonus XP, bonus gold, etc. Then it's not a choice of power vs. MF and building characters around the system, but a choice between interesting bonuses that will probably change through the career of a character. Anyway, that's just a thought on how it could work. It's still under consideration. We like the idea of having some way to improve your chances to find magic items, but not as a driving statistic for characters.
A Post Concerning The Real-Money Auction House:
"Except real money trading has always been present in Diablo 2. Except now it's going to be officially supported which will reduce scams, prevent the funding of the black market so your kids will no longer be exposed to dangerous life ruining drugs like the cancer causing marijuana."
I don't think we've gotten a price on it, but I would assume its somewhat expensive as they're basically trying to make it so theres plenty of gold sinks.
exactly, and since gold is valuable i would rather use it to buy more gems and upgrade rather than soccet/unsoccet them.

Collection for trading or what? Because you can unsocket them at will, so theres not much point in leaving sockets empty in order to collect them. The ones in your armor essentially are your collection.
@maka - I did the same thing in D2 maka, the only time I ever used gems was one time when I filled some armour full of perfect topazs for the MF, and I used perfect diamonds in some shields for the resistance bonus. Jewels or runes were usually the better option. I did like having a couple of stashes full of gems, pretty but not helpful.
@Arix3 - If they make it too expensive then it's going to be a repeat of D2 all over again, and like others have said we're going to need the gold for other stuff. You don't have to swap every gem out, I'm planning on doing it at the start of the game and then based on prices, whether to do it for every new gem or wait until you have a few levels to upgrade before paying to unsocket (desocket?) your gear.

Good point. I guess that just negates the whole "collecting" aspect.
At the point when you have a lot of high level gems and a plethora of gold, you might just want to swap gems for the hell of it.

Yea. I mean I wouldn't put a gem in an item I was looking to change soon to save the gold as I level up, but once you're at max level, or really any time you upgrade a piece of gear, its probably going to be worthwhile to regem/enchant etc.
Well that would make it so that considerably less gems would be needed for a level 14 gem. Or people would just never use gems until the very end of the game, or they have a huge surplus of them. The Jeweler can remove gems from an item at the cost of gold, although they could do a TL like system where you choose between removing a gem and destroying the item, or removing the gem by destroying it.
I'm seriously wondering how we're going to upgrade gems. The old fashioned way, 3 of same grade -> 1 of next grade? Because if that's the case, it's gonna take A LOT of gems to get a radiant star gem. Especially since only the first 5 grades can drop. >.>
There are 9 more grades above radiant, the fifth grade, so..
(# of radiant gems needed for next grade)^(# of grades above radiant)
3 ^ 9 = 19638
o.O 19638?! FML
Collecting that many 5th grade gems would take years of non-stop playing, even with trading. Unless you're able to just buy gems late game, which is less ridiculous, but still pretty bad. Hopefully they provide several different methods of upgrading gems, or reduce the number gems needed for the next level to 2, although that might make it too easy.

Unfortunately I never remember trading chipped gems =P
Like, 90% go towards socketing, 10% go towards my collection.
