IMO the previous version uses much cooler colors much more ghotic elements and there is more detail ... thats more diabloish than the recent WOW style diablo. We have to consider that it was 2004-2005, the hardware that days was like nvidia 6000 series now we have lots of horse power and that crappy cartoonish graphics. Yes the way diablo looks atm pleases the eye colorwise but it dosnt represents the name anymore , IMO.
You see this now and complain.. But "what if" Blizzard North had todays technology?
Besides, to me it looks like they still had a lot of texture reworking to do and adding lighting and particle effects.. In a finished version i dont think it would look or play as bad as it looks at the current stage.
But i ask again, "what if" Blizzard North had todays technology? Aren't you a little intrigued about their idea of taking the fight up to the heavens?
I think it makes for a sweet idea for an act in our current D3 even if it was in a later expansion.
I really don't like the camera angle at all. It seems almost intent on capturing unnecessary parts of the screen that though may add in the artistic feel, make the important parts of the game that much harder to see. Also, I hope the lighting in those areas wasn't finished yet because that 'heavenly' act looks nothing like the dark gothic feeling Diablo games should have. The look is really kind of Diablo 2.5. It has the typical feel of a transitional sequel...the one that's stuck between one really good that set the stage (D2) and the one that finally solves the problems of the series and is the game that it should be (today's D3). Just looking at the models of the monsters...I don't see a Diablo game in that. Diablo usually has the feel of the franchise in everything, from goddamn barrels and torches to monsters and areas. Had they gone through with this, I think it would have been quite a failure, the company would go down anyway and eventually we would get the Diablo we have today to comfort ourselves with. I guess the good thing is then that we didn't have to live through this D2.5 failure of a game. It would only do harm to the reputation of the franchise.

I had another account 3-4 years ago, XxColdfusionxX. And one before that which I honestly have no clue what it was called.. Funny thing is I have less than 50 posts on each of them and had better rep! You guys got all tough on me! lol
Anywho, I really enjoy the colors in the chosen art direction. I honestly think the game looks perfect. I don't use that word lightly, I have seen nothing, not one thing that I would change in the most recent screen shots.

Those pic's look ok... Its probably pre alpha so yeah...
Yeah no doubt these were very early into development. Terrible or not though, I'm happy Bliz North split when they did. I wish the employees best of luck and hope they all kept their jobs through other companies, but as far as the Diablo 3 they were developing.. I would have gladly waited all this time if I knew what a fantastic job the current team would have done. Hell I'm fine with waiting until 2012 because I know for a fact it's going to be worth the wait.
Bliz North would have made Diablo 2.5 in my opinion. Since they were the creators of D1 and D2 they were almost blinded, held in their box of thinking. Passing the torch was the best thing that could have happened. Again, imo.

Even if North had today's technology, it would've helped little with the internal crisis the company suffered after Diablo II.
Besides, I think the current graphical style of the game is way better. Not only can we distinguish monsters from the background easier, but the colors used in this North build are way too monotonic. There's too little contrast for me to like them.
Yeah but i mean if there hadn't been a crisis.. And also what i meant with the textures and lighting etc was that those were as said before just pre-alpha ones tossed in to make the game minimally testable. Keeping all that Blizzard North has accomplished in mind, i very much suspect that they knew it was too monotonic and whatnot and doubt they would have kept it that way.
I don't know, I just like their idea. It's original and, like i said, with todays technology the awesome-potential is virtually endless.

Again, if this is from 2004, it is from a 'North' build in name only. Almost every lead was gone by then. I know that the 'branding' process is really effective with people that have never been part of a commercial project with turnover, but when the talent leaves, that team is gone, and a label is only that.
Well when most of the team left in 2003 the game was probably put on hold, so in 2004/5 (which I think its when this is from), it would probably still be pretty similar. And it does seem like the style Blizzard North would use, judging by D2. It seems to somewhat prove what the team said early on about D2's look not translating well to 3D.

You're stacking up assumptions on top of assumptions, based on rough screenshots (which seem intentionally designed to downplay character art) that may have been just a very small slice of what they could have had.
I'm not at all saying I know what the whole game looked like. I wouldn't pretend that these screenshots give us anything of a good look at the game. I'm just saying that the screenshots give me the impression that it could be a Blizzard North product, and that even if they are from 2004, they still could be very similar to the game in 2003 before most of the team left.
How do we know this is real? Maybe I skimmed but I saw nothing official confirming this.
In any case... No wonder Blizzard North was trashed. I wouldn't have played this.

That's also kind of my reaction - my theory (based on nothing but guesses) is that most of the personality of the studio left with the flagship guys. Of course, they could have used a little less personality and a lot more structure. Still, it isn't fair to compare this to prepared screen shots that zoom into character art, and there's a good chance that these levels were never beyond a 'demo' state. But that's also just guesses.
Even though I like the screenshots, I like the style the new d3 has a lot more. This one is good but I don't want another d2 with new graphics, which is was this game was going to be. So it's cool to see what it was going to be, but I'm really really glad I like the new game a lot more than this.
I know I'm going to enjoy Diablo 3 a lot more than I would've enjoyed blizzard north's.
Also, even though the graphic style is pretty much the same as the first two games, I think that this diablo 3 doesn't fit with the first two games, because of the feel I get from it and because of where I think the story was going. It feels totally off, specially when compared to diablo 2, it doesn't feel like it could continue with the story and I think it specially doesn't go well with the diablo 2 expansion.
Also, weird thing, this morning I thought "I would like to see how the original d3 looked like and the barbarian's old name", one hour later I came to the computer, opened the bnet forums and found this lol, that's strange.

Rofl same here. I was wondering about the old D3 about 10 seconds before i saw the post
That's because it isn't from the same people. Most of the leads had gone to Flagship as of 2004.
