You can bet your sweet ass I'm camping out for my Collectors edition that will be worth every penny. And since i have the Naga epic mouse i'll be bale to play the whole game and all 5 skills with my mouse oh i can see it now, the dark lit room, the ambient glow from my peripherals and Diablo 3 playing on my computer in 1080p ultra detailed glory... *sigh* if only that could be tomorrow night.
Damn you man, my mouth started to water a little bit there!
As for me, I always make up unique names for each of my characters so there is no such thing as MY name that somebody could take. I never pick my nick as a character name, only a player name. So I'm fine with whatever system they implement. Though it would really suck if after 10 minutes of making up a name, I found out it was taken. With the amount of characters people will be allowed to make and the number of people playing, I think it would simply be very impractical to limit the use of names.

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head!
I guess I'm confused. In d2 the main restrictions were US West / US East, right? I thought those were done away with in d3. So what servers are you guys talking about?
North America, Europe, Asia are the main SCII battle.net servers and i expect the regions to be the same for Diablo III too, that's what i ment with the servers. Unless something changes with the Starcraft II servers i expect the same to happen with Diablo III since they're going to be attached to the same battle.net accounts and use the same (more or less) client.
Yeah the new trend is to make it region based (US/EU/Asia + Maybe Oceania?). I don't know if they're going to do something funky like in SC2 but I think it's gonna be straightforward with the names. I guess again there will be this distinction between acct name and character name, not sure if the former will be included somehow with the latter.
in sc2 beta they had a system where you had a name, "Duffman", and then an identification name, "Roflcopter", so in the end if someone wanted to add you they had to know both, and would type in "duffman.roflcopter". In the end they took it out (for good reason, it was an extremely confusing system, a lot of people didn't know which name was which), but i could see the d3 team implementing a similar system where you dont have an ID number, but an ID name.
Well, one way to handle it would be to force everyone to take an unique account name. Thus the character names would use the account name to identify them and there'd be no need for the ID number.
Say, my account name was "Don".
Then my characters would just be "Charname1@Don" or something when whispered to or added to friends list.
I assume account name will be your B.net account name. This idea is good unless you have a longer b.net account name. I would hate to have to type in: BlackScyberDragon@ScyberDragon every time. With the way the realID works, I guess once you have someone added to your friends list via Email or B.net account name, then you could see all of their characters or at least the one they are currently playing. If they allowed multiple same names, you would know which one your friend was and could whisper them through your friends interface.
(As in connections I mean repeatedly asking ScyberDragon to spam his connections for an answer lol )
DL will probably be the quickest. They will most likely allow people to dl the game before it actually goes live. Then, when midnight hits, it will unlock it so you can play it. They did something similar to this for Cata. Although, not sure how they would prevent people from playing off-line before hand. I guess they could make it so one more piece of info is needed to be downloaded to actual play the game. At 12 people log into b.net and get this last piece. They also do it this way to cut down on bandwidth needed from everyone dl the whole game at 12 which would suck.

Yeah they are going hard on digital distribution, and I like it. In terms of downloading, the game has a single player portion so it's different than Cata; for WoW, you could have the game but since the servers only went up at the certain time, you could have the game but if you could not log on, there's no real benefit. In D3, it would likely be that the online servers wouldn't come online until the proper time, and for single player, something liek mentioned above - you'd have to get some kind of authentication online before being allowed to play SP.
Yeah, they have to have some way to allow people to DL the game without being able to play it at all. Having millions of people trying to DL the while game at midnight would just be way too much and would probably end is crashing the servers. I'll leave the technical aspect of it to the programmers and developers. But, I really don't see them doing it any other way.
I am against the digital copy though. Mainly because I want the collector's edition but I also like to always have the discs when I get a game.It would be nice if you have the collector's reserved or just the game for that matter, somehow you could still DL the game to play it right at midnight but still get the box and all of its goodies when you have time.

I think I'm going to pre-order a collector's edition, and pick it up from the mail the following morning. I like my sleep more than the ability to play for a couple of hours tops before falling asleep :P.
I couldn't possibly sleep knowing others are playing D3 at that very moment. Even more so that in a twisted way I feel we who have been waiting for so long, and following news so closely deserve to enjoy the game first, even if just for a few seconds lol.

You should be able to pick a title upon character creation. So <name><title>. They give like 100 different title options (players can choose whether the title is actually displayed), and poof, any 1 name can have 100 potential variants. Titles could be linked to lore/history/bloodline or something like that. Or you can make up your own title, as long as it doesn't have references to feces or procreation.

I like this... but if it actually happens, it could be the end of my favorite diablo 2 feature
One of things I loved about Diablo 2 was when you beat normal, you were Slayer Duffman, and then when you beat (was it hell?) you became Patriarch Duffman. I really hope they return this to diablo 3, but at that means your idea might make names a little too long... "Patriarch Duffman the Awesome"... I could see this really clogging up chat channels and friends list, so they would probably only have one or the other.
