I for one LOVE the idea of reconstruction of the shrine mechanic; the change was long over due! Implementing shrines as part of the environment is great, think of it like this: you stumble into a camp of Blood Clan (forgive the D2 terms here, I have yet to comment much of the D3 stuff to memory) and they have a shrine to their "god" some bigger, meaner Blood Clan that you may encounter later. You clear the area, touch/destroy the shrine and then *BLAM* are "blessed" with some Blood Clan related ability. More slaying ensues.
Simple, yet effective. I really dig it. Word on the net is getting me to believe that this may just be how the new shrines work. Sounds pretty dope.
