I'm not sure this has been discussed much, but my question is will we once again be the universal target for every monster in Sanctuary? While it makes sense to fight a maximum number of monsters possible, does it not also make sense, however, that there simply could be other things out there that have enough reason to fight with each other, or fight someone other than you?
There are lots of games where you come across others fighting and you can either choose to get involved or move along. I guess they did this a bit in Act 5 of D2 where you find other Barbarians out on the battlefield moving forward or dying. I thought this was a nice touch. And I'd like to see a bit more of this in D3.
Also one other thing, I really hope that not everything we fight are monsters, demons, undead, etc. There's something more personal at times fighting just other humans. Consider Nihlathak for a moment. Besides actually being one of the toughest bosses in the game in my opinion, the battle itself felt more personal cause here was another mortal like yourself who had sold out his own kind and betrayed the trust of so many people. And when you fought him, he really taunted you. His taunts weren't what sounded like your typical demon rhetoric either. He didn't make many comments about our souls burning in hell or anything like that. It was more just like, "I will kill you!" And that was refreshing, wasn't it?
In Diablo 1, those mages we fought seemed like they could've been human...But at least Lazarus was. And think of how personal that battle got. Another asshole who yet again betrayed everyone and lied to everyone, then fled into his lair where instead of showing any remorse or guilt, he rubs it in your face that Albrecht is beyond saving, all while having another dead child lying there at his altar.
This kind of stuff makes games more interesting to me. Even if it's not just bosses, but it could be humans in other situations. Maybe they are bandits attempting to rob you if you stay on the roads, or crazy people escaping a nearby asylum, or a desperate plague infested town that thinks you have come to help them but then things turn awry somehow.
I think the Cultists are a definite step in the right direction. But they all seem possessed exclusively by demons. I want to fight humans that are somewhat lucid and in their right state of mind but maybe they also happen to just be murderers or generally bad people. Ya know?
Well, in the gameplay video from the presskit, the demon hunter gets a quest from a guy. The story is that this guy was tricked into selling arms to cultists. He wants to clear his name so he asks you to help him. He follows and fights along side you until you get to the human who tricked him. You then fight this human along with other monsters.
This sounds like exactly what you are looking for and I'm sure there are dzen more events just like it.
Also, in the panel for crafting sanctuary, they talk about a part of the game that is a siege on bastion keep. I can safely assume that other people at the keep will be fighting along with you againstthe seige and the thousands of monsers attacking.

I think that there should be fights 'picked' within enemies. Say you have demons and beasts on one map, why wouldn't the demons go attacking everything but demons, etc? I think it would be a cool touch to come upon a battle between two sets of enemies, definitely.

I think the problem is that such things are only possible as scripted events. They can't just make groups of monsters hostile towards each other. They'd all be dead by the time you get there, and even if you arrive during the fight, taking out any survivors is just not very challenging.
Yeah, but you can script it to when you first enter a (relatively small) area the hostility between them is triggered. It's just like Act IV, not all the barbarians died, in fact, most of the time they didn't engage until they were on your screen. I wouldn't say it's unlikely, but I wouldn't say it's as prevalent as every time you're in an area with beasts and demons.

What I have seen in some panel discussions was kind of cool actually in regards to what I've been addressing and that's varied monster behavior. So now not every monster will immediately lock on to you and attack, but others may ignore you or just generally be idle unless provoked. I thought that was a step in the right direction. And yeah, the Cultists, like I said was also a step in the right direction but I just want to fight lots of humans that aren't necessarily influenced by demons but might just be corrupt, evil, or in the pay of someone evil.
Well during the Crafting Sanctuary they showed how for early monsters they had "suspicious" stances that were triggered when you got close to monsters, but most of the time people wouldn't even see them because pretty much as soon as the monster is on your screen you attack. Basically most of the time the player initiates combat so theres not much use for having other possibilities like how they act when you're trying to avoid them, because the majority of the time you just attack right away.
I guess that's true. I generally would attack everything on sight. But it would be fun at times to stalk a monster, or feeling apprehensive about going in to attack him cause something is amiss about him.
