I agree that summoning isn't quite casting. I think though a lot of people might boil it down to melee or casting. Perhaps you should create a new poll with that third option.
In regard to the summoner issue, I think it´s more of an extra.
After summoning you will still have to either fight melee or cast spells for additional damage. (At least that's the way for the WD since Bashiok already said you can't make armies with him and just relax.)
And what about bows? And what if the spell IS a melee attack (ex.: wizard's spectral blades).
Caster and melee is a bad choice to classify playstyle. Is like to classify food by "liquid or sweet ?". You must put in the pool 2 oposite concepts and melee/caster are not oposites.
Imo the pool should be melee - character that have most of it's damage done in cloase range. Ex: WW Barbarians.
Ranged - character that attack from faraway. Ex: Meteorb Sorc.
Hybrid - character that can use both in about the same intensite or have a ranged attack with low range that in the end you have to face many melee situations. Ex: Javazon and elemental druid.

I fully support this stuff, but I think we should add 'support' in there as well. Even though Diablo 3 is not a game where such a class is supported, it doesn't mean that you don't like playing it. I find a skellymancer to be such an example, since the player itself only supports his allies (minions).
I voted caster. I'm looking forward to playing the witch doctor. Which seems more like a caster rather than being melee. Or maybe a Ranged/Caster as Shatterer said.
It's kind of strange that my highest level D2 characters are more melee.
See, and even though I don't like casters as much, I do like the kind that summon. I love the Necromancer but was only sad that you couldn't make him a viable melee character if you wanted to. I didn't even want his melee abilities to be on par with a Barb's or Pally's, but enough that if I really needed to I could kill things just by whacking at them. And the same goes for the Witch Doctor; his summons and spells look really awesome. But I'm hoping there will be a way to build him in a way that lets me do effective melee attacks as well.
Okay, people are getting too complicated for such a simple question. So I'll expand the question. Would you rather be a Barbarian with a sword and ONLY slash at the monsters the entire game or would you rather be a Wizard with a wand and ONLY use fireball the entire game (hypothetically)?

Thats boring. I made this thread so that I could read what everybody thought about it. If i wanted to make a small boring thread I would have just made a poll and asked which one people preferred. Not just why.
I would have just made a poll and asked which one people preferred..
:confused:Uh huh....
Anyways, I know you made this thread and all but it's turning into a "what spells and abilities are classified as melee or ranged" thread (which is a good idea for a thread, actually). I just thought a simple hypothetical could help answer your question better. My bad.:beg:
I considered and used HoZ and Alma Negra, but for melee, damage reduction, defense, and blocking is the most important mod for the frostie shield. Alma Negra is the second best for the +ed, ar, and +2 skills, and HoZ is great for all the reasons paladins use it.
It's still a melee spell since the spell have no range.
And melee attacks can have AoE (ww, cleave).
oh misunderstood... I consider melee as "normal" attack (left click) with your weapon... for me spell is another thing... You call that melee and me I'm inclined to say no/small range spell. Anyway...

I completly not understand what you're talking about, I think you post in a wrong thread !!

Oh... I that cause no class should even be melee. Normal attack suck hard. I quite happy to see the more fighter oriented characters (barb and monk) spaming skill non stop, even ranged skills.
Casters have always been my favorite. Was always the Sorceror in D1, for the first few years I started playing D2 I never played anything but a sorc. Then came the nec/druid. Even made a warcry barb before actually wanting to try melee.
Caster, 100% caster. I think it took me 3 years of playing D2 until I truely played a melee character f Ive been trying to figure out why but honestly i dont really know. I guess I like the dukeing, keeping people at bay and just avoiding dmg as much as I can. When I started playing Hc a few years ago it solidified even more, the sorc, druid and necro is still first pick.
Haha its wierd, I dont even pick ama if I can help it so its got to have something to so with spells and magic.
Even in other games it allways been caster. Mage in wow, sorc in Aion, mage (mabey its called something els, cant remember) in Tibia etc.
Guess its gonna be wiz for D3, or the doctor.
Dunno if this has been discussed allready but do you think it sais something about the persons personality?
I think he was trying to ask if whether liking melee or casting says something about the players personality.
I guess so. I wouldn't really know because I like them equally. I usally start with the simplest character to get a hang of the game, then move on to something more complicated.
I think people that like security and low risks like to play with summoners. Let your minions take the damage allways give you a edge to calculate the danger of the situation unlike a class that must take the damage and get the risk by itself.
I also believe that people who like more tatics play with hybrid and versatile class while more simple minded players likes to play with extremes.

mmmm I don't find it "melee" spell.... It's not a mod to your normal attack it's a spell.. and if you check, the spell is AOE...
