In this video at Blizzcon 2009, the panel vaguely talks about the different Monster Archetypes and they dance around the "One-Offs", giving us the names and leaving them open for debate. Here is the video if you want to see for yourself -
Anyways, the names of these "one-offs" are the sleeper, alarm, bee hive, linked, sapper, thief. I'm going to suggest an idea for each of these and you guys can say whether you disagree or agree..
Sleeper : Kind of explains itself, a monster that puts a player into a sleep, where some type of action or time limit is needed to wake them up.
Alarm : A (probably smaller and weaker) monster that is away from a mob who could run up to you and create lots of aggro (alert the mob you're there) if you don't destroy it fast enough.
Bee Hive : A nest full of monsters that are either already alive or is rapidly producing them. (Like the nests in Diablo II)
Linked : I really can't put my finger on this one, maybe two monsters that share the same health or just a mutated monster that has another one attached to it.
Sapper : In WoW, "sap" is an attack that incapacitates a player until they are attacked. Sappers in D3 could do this.
Thief : A thief steals your weapon, armor, or gold until you kill it. They could also have a higher chance to drop a lot of gold or some rare items.
I'd say sappers in D3 would be more along the lines of hexers, basically curses and whatnot.
Linked, perhaps monsters that are somehow linked together, be it by being more powerful when they are both alive, or by way of the fallen shamans, who ressurected the fallen, making those two monsters "linked" in a sense.
Thief is probably a character that steals mana, life, or maybe does larger amounts of damage while flanking you.
Good thread man, I approve ^^.

Ohh, I like your thief idea, I didn't think of it that way
And to build off of what you said about the linked monsters, they could be twins (sort of like The Ancients, but not three) that you must kill within a few seconds of each other or they revive.
the fallen shaman is like the leutenant described in the video... i think linked are like those monsters in D2 (don't remember the name) that were one on top of the other... so once u killed one the other one comes running at you with a big knife
Sleeper: a very powerfull monster that are disabled but given some circustance it awakes. Killing him before this circustance is the strategy ti deal with.
(I disagreed with the OP because some blue post round tehre already stated that tehy will really try to avoid effects that disables the player)
Alarm: Pretty much the same. A monster that you have to kill before it call reinforcements.
Hive: A stationary monster that keeps spawning some other monster type, like crow nests and imp pits in D2.
Linked: I agree with Nacho's idea. Problably a monster that drops another.
Sapper: I think those are monsters that lay traps and similar stuff on the ground.
Thief: Those are non offensive monster with fast movement that steal items and gold on the ground and run away. If you kill him he will drop all the items and gold he collected.
I think logically sleepers and alarms would be placed together.
Sapper is a combat engineer according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapper
Perhaps it may be a target you DONT want to kill, killing it may have consequences far worse than letting it live. IE it performs some demonic rituals and if you kill it after the ritual is performed a HUGE demon pops out that's really really hard to kill, the demonic ritual eventualy drains the life of the sapper and will die on its own. This could provide interesting game play mechanics because it would limit the use of AOE if a player is getting swarmed, creating a sense of urgency and helplessness.
Well from what all of you said, I think you guys have "sleepers" right.
I'm leaning more towards the thief type to take health or a resource, since taking your gold or an important item would just plain suck.
Linked monsters could be anything mentioned, I have no idea. Same goes to sappers..
Thief: Those are non offensive monster with fast movement that steal items and gold on the ground and run away. If you kill him he will drop all the items and gold he collected.
I like this idea !! It's certain thief will never steal your weapon or your gears... But steal the best item on the ground can be great !! and after he go hide beside others monsters

Yeah, thats the idea. Though it can end up be very frustrating if he steal some unic item. But it still works very nice with gold and orbs!

That thief better not look like anyone I know. And that 'anyone' better not be next to me when am playing D3, especially when the thief is running away with a unique he found on the ground.
Man, I would be so fucking pissed.
On a more hopeful note, I have very few friends who actually look like demons.
I'd be happy with it as long as he didn't run off to some place impossible to find or infested with monsters. I can also see there being a glitch where you don't get your item back, I'd be so angry hahah
I do like the idea of taking health globes though.. maybe he (or another archeotype) could even use them and you don't get them back.
I was wondering.. It would be very cool if the bosses could belong to any of those archtypes. Boss fights would not be only fight a big large monster.
For exemple, a swarm type boss could be a entire army of small vicous enemies that keep coming and you have to destroy or block some doors to stop their waves.
Those different boss fights could bring a real fresh air to the game.
Sleeper : I think a sleeper is some sort of monster that "evolves" or wakes up. He starts off innocent enough but then awakes into something worse. I think of the fanatic fallen.
Alarm : Someone who debuffs you signaling others that you are ready to be attacked.
Bee Hive : A unit that spawns other smaller units. Like the wasp we saw from act 2.
Linked : Two monsters that work in conjunction. One can silence and the other can disarm that way no matter who you are you have a weakness to them.
Sapper : Someone who steals life or mana from you.
Thief : Someone who comes up, hits you once and then runs away. Then they repeat the process. Never staying long enough for you to kill them without chasing them.

Linked: Probably a group of monsters that attack/move in unison i.e. if you attack one, all will attack you.
I really liked this idea!
Like a condenated group of monsters that act as one.
Ex:
A group of five floating ghosts that keeps spinning in circles and try to surround you and drain your life force (then you have to kill then while running away from the center of their enchantment).
Maybe linked such as the burrowers in Act II of D2 that drop babies? Just another suggestion I suppose. Great thread!

Bah unic too !! it's give more reason to do everything to kill him

Linked - Like a shaman (who raises the mob) of a mob boss (like the guys who keep the fallen from fleeing) may also give buffs
Thief - idk... probably steals orbs as mentioned before
