Battle.net developer Greg Canessa says that Blizzard is actively working on a LAN-like solution to include for Battle.net play in StarCraft II
....
I asked Canessa whether the solution his team is working on might include a pseudo-LAN connection, where the game would only check in with Battle.net to authenticate before reverting to typical LAN behavior.
"Something like that," he replied. "Maintaining a connection with Battle.net, I don't know if it's once or periodically, but then also having a peer-to-peer connection between players to facilitate a very low-ping, high-bandwidth connection.. those are the things that we're working on.
.... Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson also confirmed that Diablo III will treat LAN in the same way that StarCraft II does, meaning that while traditional offline LAN will not be included in that game, it should support any Battle.net solution developed for the RTS.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
I think they mean that you would still have to buy an original copy of the game and own a genuine CD key in order to play LAN, and even then, its online on battle net but u connect directly to your friend's pc or something... like the TCP/IP option in d2.

When needing bnet you need internet so no use for lan then. Could just use bnet instead.

^good news for those that have a slow connection like dial up or something and would otherwise have problems playing on battlenet.
And the way I see it (pretty simple really): only one pc from those connected in the network will NEED to have teh interwebz access. Which means that:
You need only buy a single (!) copy of your favorite game for all your buddies to enjoy with you on lan parties.

You know, they could fix the issue of everyone playing on one CD-Key very easy. When two people connect and they share the same CD-Key, and try to start a game, it simply tells them "Cannot Proceed: CD-Key match is unnacceptable" or something like that. I think it could be done without internet connection, but I don't think Blizzard will shoot for it...
Doesn't really kill me at all, but I know a lot of people love to play on LAN.

There are no stupid questions, just a bunch of inquisitive idiots.
I don't blame them for this. I mean who wants their work stolen when they could implement a simple system for "phoning home" for verification purposes. The vast majority of people will have internet connectivity even for a single player game. For LAN parties, just hook up the switch to a router so users can be verified.
Yea, I'm one of those people with a fairly crappy ISP and no other options in my area, so I'll be glad for this if it works out. I know most people these days have decent internet, but I'm glad Blizzard's finding a way to include LAN.
Yeah, they're not going to implement something without at least -some- calling back home to B.net 2.0, or there's no point in avoiding D2-style LAN in the first place (i.e., avoiding piracy).
I get people used to do that and some would like to do it again, and I don't mean to touch that whole debate off again, but, really people...if you're going to enjoy the game, pony up the bones to the artists and other developers that slaved for years so you could enjoy it.
I still feel for the minority that have crappy / no ISPs, but in this day and age if you can afford the $50-$60 for D3 and at least a few hundred dollars for a computer to run it, you can pay like $10/mo. or whatever dial-up is going for these days...I'm sorry there's just no excuse anymore.
well i think yes theres no point of lan if you need internet buy if they can work on something like.. you only need to activate your cd-key on your pc once to activate that option then im ok with all that..
good to hear that news
Well this should kill the whine about slow connections.. but now you still need some kind of connection to authenticate with your LAN friends in bnet and then you can start playing.
thanks for the find

I'm glad bnet got more focus than lan
but the way sc2 is doing offline play is a guest mode where you can't get achievements or really do much in the way of making your account better
good to hear that news
if i am gonna play MP it will be on B.Net
