Well, New Tristram was built around the ruins of Old Tristram. Maybe some locals (or cultists) restored the Cathedral in the 20 years that have passed.
Well, the cathedral was originally built by the Horadrim (if my lore is correct) to house Diablo's soulstone and also provide a resting place for the Horadrim dead as time passed. Doubtless it had a lot of magic woven into its structure, which may have made it difficult for even a horde of demons to destroy. It went pretty deep, after all...four levels of dungeons, four levels of catacombs, four levels of caves, three or four levels (I forget, it's been years) of mortal-realm-twisted-into-Hell, then Diablo's hangout.
And after all, Diablo's anger was directed at the people of Tristram who helped the original hero find and defeat him. His minions may have simply disregarded the cathedral, and attacked the town itself.
Thats what I was thinking. We never got to even go near the Cathedral in D2. It wouldn't make any sense because even if it was burnt down there would still be tons of tunnels and dungeons underneath.

Right. I'm sure all that was destroyed in D2, was just the cathedral itself. Like, the building. But even the first level is already underground in D1, seeing as you're coming down the stairs. So the dungeon itself is still there.
Thats right. The level 1 dungeon in D1 is already a underground level beneath the cathedral.
So the cathedral was destroyed but rebuilded (whole town was rebuilded).
If you see the cathedral artwork in D3 it's is quite different from what it was in D1...
Since the cathedral itself was pretty much a pathway into hell I would assume that none of the tristram villagers ever cared to actually go there again and probably boarded the place up. God knows I wouldn't go to pray in a place that housed the lord of terror.
I would imagine that since no one was in the cathedral that the demons didn't really care about it. I do know from playing D1 and D2 that cathedral though is far more northwest than the map goes in D2. So we never do see it.
I was in Tristram the other day, and definitely don't think that little foundation that everyone thinks is the Cathedral is it. But if it was, I'd like to think that once the Worldstone was destroyed and Hell gained easier access to Sanctuary, the ruins of the Cathedral rebuilt themselves...it was in a movie, but I can't remember what one. But that's just my thinking.

Just saying that as my memory serves, the Cathedral was a little more Northern, but I could be wrong since I haven't played Diablo I in a while. Also, the foundation looks a little too small to belong to the Cathedral.

Yea, I just played D1 and D2 and there is definitely no cathedral in the tristram in D2 there is stone walls and trees blocking it. If the demons were spawned from there I doubt they would wreck the cathedral they were coming from.

As for the rest of Tristram in D3, I think it's still wrecked. Take a look at this:
It resembles Griswald's house, with the "L" shape, similar doorway, and an anvil in the center. I think this is what we'll see in Tristram. I suppose one could argue that this is Charsi's house, but I would disagree. It's a different shape, and the anvil was not inside the house.
I understand that the dungeons in the Cathedral survived because they're underground but what I don't understand is why they don't look anything like the dungeons from Diablo 1. They have a totally different style and structure.
Could it be that they were rebuilt? But who would want to rebuild them let alone visit them after all the horrible stuff that happened down there? Plus, judging how the catacombs look, a lot of digging was involved. Who would go to all that trouble just to rebuild a bunch of dungeons that were once inhabited by demons and undead? I mean talk about hurting the land value. It just doesn't make sense to me.
No need to apologize! To be stubborn is sometimes good! Look at me! If I wasn't stubborn, some people would still think that the demon from the end of the cinematic is not Diablo!
I don't think the demon at the end of the cinematic is Diablo...
But anyways...umm... well i've got nothing now that the issue was resolved.:D

Maybe it wasn't the townspeople? Perhaps the demons and undead that resided deep in the depths of the catacombs got bored and started tinkering with hammers and nails?? But in all seriousness, I think that the evil presence beneath the Cathedral has gotten stronger since the destruction of the Worldstone, therefore by magical means the catacombs were rebuilt/expanded.

I just said it in spite of what you said. haha. I thought it was Diablo, just that with him being re-vamped and changed around that he could be a handful of other things too.

Well I guess that demon magic could've rebuilt the dungeons but to me that sounds sort of iffy. Why would the demons want to rebuild the dungeons either? Everything they need is already there. Dark areas, spooky places and all that good stuff. I can't really see the need for them to blast the whole place to kingdom come. In fact, I imagine that the demons would have preferred the creepy, claustrophobic areas to the massive, cavernous ones. It just seems more like their style if you know what I mean. Of course, who am I to say what their style is...
