Some drop rates for items in D2 are ridiculous, i played D2 for 2 years and never found an arkaine's valor armor, and believe me, it's not because i didn't play enough. I want the items to be hard to find in D3 so they will be rewarding when you'll find them, but i don't want them to be that hard to find either...
Drop rates are exactly the same in single and multiplayer from what i remember. I think you think "rarity was just about perfect" because you conveniently forgot pretty much all the stuff was duped.
Yeah, I said that rarity was good on Bnet but it should have been reduced in single player mode.
I thought rarity of godly items was good on Bnet, but rarity of low-level uniques and sets were messed up because you didn't hardly find any until you are way too high level to use them...its annoying being level 95 and having 4 pieces of Sigon's set drop every time you kill Hell baal. They should have just restricted all sets and uniques to being Elite level, since it only takes a few days to get to level 60+, and they wasted half of their art and creativity on items that you will never find useful after the first day.
Duping wasn't really an issue when I played. I know there were times when duping was a real problem, but I never saw it..
Then you should play Guild Wars. Diablo is for power gaming and rare item hording
I'm sure you dictate what Diablo is and what Diablo 3 will be. I'm sick of that stupid attitude of yours. Who the hell are you to say what Diablo is about, and even more what Diablo 3 will be about, and how the game will be? Because someone would like Diablo 3 another way than yours (and beside, pretty sure the guy was sarcastic), then you just think that he should go and play something else.
Just get it through your close minded head of yours that Diablo 3 won't be the same as Diablo 2, and D3 must not be like D2 just because you want it to be. I don't see you trying to any opinion around here, just throwing stupid comments around because you want D3 a certain way, and not caring about anything else.
The thread is called "rare runes and gems", so dunno what you're talking about. Anyways, Sigon's is quite a bad example i think, because a ) it drops BUCKLOADS, don't even bother putting any mf on, and b ) it IS actually quite useful, i can remember a lot of people recommending it to level a character, to use it in duels, and even to use it on cheap high level characters.
Sigons was never good in any way or form....whoever suggested you to use it had no clue wtf they were doing
Let me get something straight here. What exactly is the topic? The cited quote in the OP? Runes and gems? Rarity of items? Because it's all going on simultaneously.

The quoted topic is that they say there won't be very rare runes or gems. If they don't want extremely rare runes or gems, it stands to reason that they would have the same policy on other item types...so the core of the topic is really on the existence of, "extremely rare items" vs just "somewhat hard to find items."

the problem is that the items in diablo 2 did not require skill to find. they just required a LOT of free time.
There is skill...there is skill in balancing your equipment to maximize MF potential, fighting takes more skill when you are wearing all MF gear, quickly switching back and forth to MF gear for kill-blows takes skill, learning what bosses have what drop rates for the items you want takes skill, and streamlining your UI/travel time takes skill.
I can kill Baal on hell mode 17 times per hour with full MF, and I can repeat that all day long without every dying. Are you telling me there's no skill in that?
If it takes someone else 3 hours to kill him once, then it's really not a question of just "how much free time we have."

You got this crap down to a feraking science. I don't even think about that kind of stuff. To me it's, "Oh look! A good item! Yippee!" Not all this, "I have an increased 89.237% chance to find a magic item which means that the chance of fighting ____ is up to .016% chance now. If it happens on the very last % to 100% then i have to kill Baal exactly 6250 times. Of course there is the chance I could find another jewel to increase it as I have an extra slot in my socketed armor." That just takes all the fun out of the game for me. But, I'm not saying it can't be fun for you. Just that there really is no skill involved. Just a lot of math to figure out exactly what chance u have to get a certain item. Why not just play and hope and if you get the item GREAT! but if not then whatever.

They should make SP less rare and B.net more rare. (drop rate percentage that is).
I've been only playing SP Diablo 2 (after i finish Hell, i normally maybe go for a couple of runs and end my misery of this addiction), i've never found anything more rare than Ist rune - this is annoying! (I finished with 3-4 characters).
So i really wish that for Single Player they will make items easier to find, especially since there isn't any competition of who has the best in SP.
I only read a part of this thread, but it seems that many people want the drive for better and better stuff to always be there (ie you can never have the "best" stuff) while others want good items to drop more often so that they don't have to do item runs a million times. I don't know much about the D2 LOD expansion pack, but I stopped playing when it was released. I've heard many had the same complaints. The reason I stopped playing is when unqiue items became dominant and they introduced runes. What made D2 so great is that noone had the "best items" since rares were the best and there was essentially infinite randomness to them, always making it possible to find yet a better item. Uniques were still used but rares were what you were looking for. This also made trading awesome because there wasn't a set price for everything...it was all up the the eye of the beholder. In D2, it was also an accomplishment to get to lvl 99...now I see them everywhere, boring.
I'm definitely going to give D3 a chance since I loved the the previous game so much, but if it's like LOD, I see myself either strickly playing hardcore or not playing at all.
I'm sure many do not agree w/ these assertions, but this serious needs to be more challenging, more of an adult game...a game were you intelligence along side your activity pays off.
I liked the rareness of D2 but only because it wasn't impossible to get the rarest items since there were a lot of dupes and botted things. Assuming that in D3 there won't be anywhere near the amount of dupes or bots than I would like the items to be less rare and attainable much like how they are now.
Best solution for this is if they would go back to Classic D2 item system(pre-LOD).
This means uniques are nice items and in some slots they are one of the best, but almost always a good rare item will beat it depending on what your character really needs.
With rares you won't have the too rare not too rare situation. You can quite easily find decent and very good rares that will take you very long in the game but you can hardly ever find the perfect rare that has max mods. Hardly ever is about same as finding a zod, but you can still find close to perfect which will always satisfy you if it is an upgrade where with uniques you would be disappointed because you found a set colossus blade instead of an unique.
Finding extremely rare items is yeah about skill and knowledge! If you baal run 1000 times (which anyone can do) you can find your items but it is based on LUCK not skill or knowledge..
Many times I've been trading with some newcomers that for some reason have really great items and me myself have been playing for 9 years of that game and there are many items that I've never found..
Yea I never found anything 'cept a Lo. I got money by making perf or near perf runewords and selling them for runes. I found a near-perf Griffon's Eye once but really you'll never find what you're looking for. You just have to take what you do find and sell it to someone who needs it so you can buy what you need.
How many times do you have to kill Baal for a Zod?
0.00003 x 33 333 = 0.99999
That is more than 30 000 Baalkills for one Zod? How many have got such a divine patience...
Actually, x33 333 = 0.99%...that's still less than 1% chance. Multiply it by 100, and you get a 100% chance of getting one after... yeah 3 333 300 baal kills
But, think of how many players there are. I just checked and there were 32,000 players on d2. If everyone did 100 baal runs, there'd be a Zod rune on the server, just like it was intended

Or maybe 800 baal runs since people mostly do it in 8 people group so thats 7 less separate baal runners. (or average 500-600 if some portion of people do solo etc)
