I thought Arcane was just pure magic. So instead of saying "magic damage", its Arcane.
From my understanding, Arcane is a type of magic, but it's non-elemental. Kind of like the Necromancer's Bone Spells. So, when it does give damage (like Teleport is an Arcane skill, but, by default, does not give damage, although a rune can change that), the damage is non-elemental, or Arcane.
Is arcane even an element? And what are we to say what color it has It is not like it is something in real life we can compare it to.
I"m talking about the game's elements we know so far: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Disease and Arcane.
Every element are suppose to have a unic color to represent it, like Red for Fire and Green for Disease. When i say arcane are purple is because most of arcane skills are purple, the weapon with arcane modifier are purple and the arcane spell icons are mostly purple. However Desintegrate, a arcane damage spell, have red color.
I'm trying to say that it's possible to have different colors between the lihgtning spells. Like a yellow thunderstorm and the blue eletrecute we know.
Choosing where your lightning go is a no to me, since thats what lightning is about: randomness.
And if we go the logical way, if the color depends on how hot the lightning is, then we could assume that when you are more powerful, its hotter, and so the color would change accordingly.
So the lightning would always be white, but the outline would be purple first, then as you gain level it gets more blue, then green, then yellow.. orange.. and end up red.
...they should just include customizable lightning color ^.^
Do you mean choosing as in the path it takes through the air to get to the target, or actually choosing to make the lightning bolt strike your enemy? Diablo isn't completely realistic, but whats not to say to counter the latter that the wizard's lightning spell is actually a form of electric repulsion/attraction that disrupts the electron flow on/around the enemy? This would make for a lightning bolt that isn't random.
You seem to have to it backwards. The blues/purples would be the hottest and oranges/reds the coldest.
I like this idea though except not to go overboard with it, the colour would be a soft tinge while the bolt will basically be white.
Also with the flashbangs a previous reply mentioned - would be cool to see sparks fly. I love particle systems in games (I think Nox did a great job of using particles) and I think it would really complement the lightning strikes.
I see a static field type thing going on, no charged bolt. Unless you're talking about the purple magic missile she uses a lot.

Are you sure every element is supposed to have a unique colour to represent it? I thought it was just coincidence, that they were only coloured that way because thats how they are in real life. As in, fire is red/orange because fire really is red/orange. Ice is blue. Poison is generally green because its associated with plants, though I guess poison can be colourless or black or any other colour too. But yeah, seeing as lightning comes in all colours in real life, they could make it a little different to the other elements. But I don't mind, I like blue lightning.

The only logical way she could actually use lightning at all is by being able to change the amount of - and + atoms in a thing, but choosing where it bounces is a no go, since the lightning happens so fast, she wouldn't be able to think fast enough.
The color thing. Someone mentioned earlier that the color has nothing to do with the actual heat, but is instead an indicator of what is in the cloud it comes from. I think it should change color depending on where you are! If it's raining it should be blue, if it's hail it should be... Whatever that color was. If it's all dusty it should be orange. So on and so forth.

"Bashiok: Very cool. A lot of the effects that you make factor in to the abilities that the characters are using, so fire and arcane and all that stuff, but in the world of Diablo it seems like there are very specific magic types that exist... it is actually a pretty broad spectrum, but is there any limitation there to what you can do with ? different damage types?
Julian: Yeah in fact that?s a common input that I?ll receive is ?Hey this guy?s a firey this or whatever, but can we make that fire look green?? And that?s where the sort of designer in me has to kind of come out and say, wait a minute if we make fire green all of a sudden it?s a bit of a miscommunication in terms of the gameplay. And so there is a bit of constraint there that, at one point I?m trying to make things look as epic as they can, but at the same time they have to be really clear to the player so that they?re not confused that you know, green fire might mean poison. "
This reminds me of an earlier idea I had, where they should have runes that change the damage type of a skill (and thus the color of the skill), so you'd have green flames which actually do poison damage if you added a "poison" rune to a fire skill.
Then they could have their immunities, and this would be how a one-element build would get past them.
The third spell she uses is very clearly charged bolt.
That's the static field thing I was talking about. The Lightning looked more like it was traveling through the ground, which is what I always imagine Static Field as opposed to flying through the air, which is how I remember Charged Bolt, I'm pretty sure that's what it was in D2 (I haven't made/played a sorc in a VERY long time). Granted, it does look similar to Charged Bolt, and maybe if they make the animations better that's what it will be, but it just looks like Static Field right now, traveling along the ground and such.

Actually taking a better look at the picture, I can't seem to figure out where the chain lightning bolt was heading on its second target (if it is chain lightning at all). Is it attacking the seat...?

Or she manipulates gravity to pull the electrons from the point where the target is, through the path that the lightning is supposed to take (grabbing more electrons in the process), and releasing them in front of her, making them search their way back in a violent lightning. And I'm sure that the Wizard can use some sort of magic to prevent the electrons from around the created tunnel from entering it and ruining the lightning.
Or she uses some kind of magic to make points in the air into lightning conductors, thus making a lightning created by him/her to go flying towards it. That also gives the ability to create arcs and control the lightning. But this "solution" has no way of actually creating the lightning. Or she turns mana into electricity Any form of energy can be changed into another form of energy, thus it is even possible if mana existed in real life.
Does any of this have anything to do with the pretty arc that the first post was about
There's no scientific explanation, lol. She's converting mana into something that resembles lightning. Same with fire. Its fire, yes, but it has no logical explanation for being there because its not actually burning oxygen to stay alive, its burning mana.
That's unfortunate, because I'm never wrong and if you think I'm wrong, you clearly have no clue what you're talking about.
I wonder why selfconfident people like this is so common on the net.
And i agree with Atruments. I just take the explanation from the official sites and manual and thats enough for me. But it must be fun for physicians to explain the spells lol

No, in Diablo II and I Charged Bolt traveled along the ground in small, well, charges. Diablo II charged bolt: http://img152.imageshack.us/i/manybolts2up6.jpg/, Diablo III charged bolt: http://www.diablowiki.net/images/thumb/b/b2/Wiz-charged-bolt1.jpg/350px-Wiz-charged-bolt1.jpg.
