In the recent Blue tracker post "Party Bonus = +1 skills per player in party" the asker says:
As monsters become more powerful as players join the game, players themselves should be more powerful by working together.
+1 Skills to All per person in your group. Since there is a max of 4 people(?) per game, this will give you +3 Skills to All. Bonus only works if you're near your party.
Its an incentive for people to want to play and work as a group.
It's a stupid idea and I'm glad Bashiok rejected it, but read the post more carefully. He says "Since there is a max of 4 people(?) per game". Here's Bashiok's response:
I'm not sure that's the right way to go about it, but the cooperative game definitely centers on keeping players together. Encouraging them to stay near each other, and helping them get back together should they be separated. There are many ways to do both, not all of them are the right answer.
He never says that the max isn't 4... did I miss some kind of announcement that the player max was 4? Am I reading too much into this? Usually Bashiok is good about touching on each question when he responds, even if it's "that hasn't been confirmed" or "no comment"...
Oh God please let there be an 8 player max... My LAN parties would never be the same otherwise...
It has been stated long before this, that Blizz is aiming for 4 players max, thus far they do not see the need for more then 4 players in 1 game.
It can change, but for now it's 4.
Epic fail.
That just smashed my whole vision for Diablo 3 multiplayer. SMASHED!
EDIT: Can you link me to Blizzards 4-player max announcement? Because I see where Blizzard says "currently the max player count is at 8, but we have the most fun with 4 players." This was from mid-last year so it could have changed by then, I just can't seem to find an official statement by Blizzard that it's now 4 players max.
I think 4 player max is a good idea. Beyond 4, it's hard to understand what's going on (think Baal's throne). It's also hard to have a good time just talking to other people with so many people potentially clogging the chat.
Sure there are issues for dueling and trading games, but 4 is a good number for actually playing the game.

Yes, 4 is a good number for people without many friends. What about the rest of us who regularly hold D2 LAN parties with 8 people? I'm not alone here, I hear about people having D2 LAN parties all the time. Fine, 4 players is a good number to have, but that doesn't mean you throw in restrictions... Here's an idea, make the enemies get tougher at a regular pace up to 4 players, and then beyond 4 the enemies get way harder but keep the same exp per person. This will keep most people playing 4 player games, but still lets us party-lovers get our 8-player action. In fact, if the enemies are getting way harder, why not INCREASE the player limit and have all out chaos with 16 players? Still, the average person will play with a 4 player max, but a lot of D2 players thrived on the chaos of the higher player limit.
I don't understand Blizzard's philosophy here. Diablo 1 had a 4 player max, but it was also really dark and scary so and having 8 players would ruin the scariness. Diablo 2 had 8 players but it was a lot less dark and scary. Diablo 3 is even LESS dark and scary than Diablo 2, yet the player limit goes back down?
I'm not saying greatly increasing the monster difficulty is the only solution, and I'm not saying it's the best solution, but I think REDUCING the max player count on a sequel to a game as successful as Diablo 2 is a MAJOR step in the wrong direction.
It's quite a shame however when you have a group of 5 or 6 people who want to play the game together.
Exactly, and when I have any kind of get-together with my friends, there's rarely less than 5 of us there. It just makes no sense.
I STILL haven't seen anyone post an official Blizzard confirmation, everywhere I look I see people saying that they HEARD it was 4, but the only Blizzard confirmations I can find anywhere say the limit is 8, but they prefer playing with 4. Someone, please, if you heard an official Blizzard statement regarding this, link me to it or I'm calling it totally bogus.

Personally I'd like to see them bring that scary environment back. As good as D2 was, there were a few areas they strayed from the original game that were not improvements. I don't know if D3 is less scary then d2, certainly in some areas less then D1, but that doesn't mean with music, sounds, lighting all corrected for release dungeons won't capture that original haunted feel.
I don't think that 4 is too low, I could understand having a limit as high as 5, but even 8 seems like too much, and makes your hero seem insignificant to the fight its self. Not a fair comparison, but 40 man raids in WoW were terrible. With class roles you had 'teams' working together (heals, tanks dps, and somewhat CC), and in even in your role you were made insignificant when the teams got too large. 20 man raids were much better, and moving to 25 and 10 man raids for TBC was an obvious desicion.
I much more enjoyed smaller content where your contributuions are larger simply by how much less the crowd dilutes your input. In diablo where everyone will have essentially the same role, groups should be even smaller.

But what about the LAN parties? Those players are just alienated? The game may be less chaotic with 4 players, but again, SOOOO many people enjoyed the chaos.

Theres no LAN in D3 anyways...kinda sucks but im pretty sure that its confirmed.
Also I think in one of the recent news post a bunch of questions were answered and it was stated that no definitive MP limit has been set yet
Has anyone considered it might be more about performance?
I mean, really, perhaps at this still-early stage it's just not realistic to have more than 4 players in a game due to lag or something. The graphics are fully 3d, and with the physics flying around all the time i could see how too many people could slow things down.
Personally, I don't really care.

Blizzard said that it's not about performance and that the servers and the engine can handle well over 8 players.
The four-player limit is not official/final- that's been said numerous times by Diablo III representatives. He simply did not address that since that was not the question of the post.

Yeah, I finally saw the recent post of his saying they haven't decided yet which puts me quite at ease. Although I'd still like to know what the majority of players out there would prefer.
Dude, i know 4 player max sounds crappy but they said that with 8 players like in d2, you would not be able to see shit with all the skills and effects, it will simply pwn your graphic card and your pc...

You would have to have one horrible pc and gfx card for it to get pwned by the graphics and physics being used in D3. With that said I know blizz aims for high quality graphics but running on lower end PC's but I just cant see this being a reason...but who knows

i am not sure, but i think Jay Wilson said that this is one of the reasons that there wont be 8 players in a game... I am not sure though.
Maybe he said that it will simply be too much, when 8 players will use their spells and shit, not the whole thing with the graphics but simply the way it will look.
@Lusida: I personnaly dont think taht 8 players is better than 4. in fact, 4 players is really nice... I dont know why but i always liked small parties in diablo 2... 2-5 people...

Yes, Jay Wilson, the person who blatantly misrepresents situations to suit his own purposes ("it's impossible to make the light radius work in 3D" = we want to change diablo fundamentally and there isn't jack fucking shit you can do about it).

Come to think of it, its probably for making the encounters easier to balance and make a challenge or something
id rather 4 players to be honest. It makes the game more fun. Look at other games with max 4 players. Left 4 Dead for instance. It gives the game a greater dependence on teamwork and strategy. I feel like more than 4 people will result in spamming area skills and chaotic moshpits like in Baal runs. 4 is plenty.
