Another thread called "General Stats" by Airandius prompted me to write about this particular idea. In this thread he had mentioned a page that showed your basic stats... my idea is thus: the in-game Diablo Beastiary.
In the Beastiary you would see things that would give character and background to the world you live in. This would work in tandem to parts of the story that are revealed through questing. Completing the beastiary will also reward completionists and those that like to explore.
Things often seen in a beastiary:
-The Monster (how many times you've killed it)
-Common places you find it
-Background information of the monster itself
-Loot tables (Castlevania style)
This would be somewhat of a journal that would fill out as you came across the monsters of Sanctuary.
I'd like to know what the community thinks of this idea. I can see it working really well, giving depth to the world and another facet of the game to pursue. I can also see why others may be against the idea.
(I also searched for a thread that was similar to this and didn't come up with anything, so I hope this is an original thread)
It seems like a good idea, I would probably only use it for the loot tables/monster location though.
I am not sure if different monsters drop different types of items though, and if they do it might cause people to just MF on certain monsters, looking for a hot item.
Sounds like a good idea, however I doubt that Blizzard will implement something like this. If they supported addons, someone would probably make something like this.
Ofcorse they do. Every monster type has a different loot table and every item has a particular % chance to drop.
In Diablo, loot tables were determined by monster level over monster type :(. However, that is how I'd LIKE it to be.
I figured it'd be a wonderful addition since they are already providing background for some monsters as we go through. Perhaps it could be possible to pick up lore as a secondary skill which allowed you to research the monsters. This is only a rough idea, but I'd love to see something like this.
Hurray, it's nice to see that I inspired you to share this idea.
I totally support a bestiary, it would be soooooo nice.
Yup! Your thread started me thinking about Sacred 2 and then to Castlevania for some reason
I think this is a really good idea! I am pretty sure they announced something about an achievement system being put into d3 (correct me if i am wrong), hopefully it will include a bestiary as well.
wait u guys want a bestiarity like the ones from the final fantasy series?
i guess that would be kinda cool, maybe u can get some achievements for finding and killing every type of monster in the world of sanctuary
I think that loot tables and percentage drops are something that the character wouldn't know.
Exactly
Other than that, I think the bestiary idea is great... Maybe a shared bestiary which you could access from the main menu, kind of like the "Cinematics" and "Credits" on DII (right above the "Exit Diablo II" button if you never noticed them)
Sounds like a pokedex for demons I support this idea, especially the part about a kill counter, it would be nice to know how many fallen I've squished,

GOTTA KILL THEM ALL, DIABLOMON!:D
maybe u can get achievements for killing a lo monster of the same type, or u fight a super duper unique every time u kill a lot of them, if we had stuff like that kill counters would be very useful
These would be good additions in an adventurous/questing type of RPG, however you have to remember that Diablo is mostly about killing stuff and killing it fast. And thats exactly how the devs are making the gameplay - so that you can run through towns fast, buy stuff fast and get back to killing fast (i think there was something like this mentioned in BlizzCast8).
Ofcorse there are people out there (including me) who also like to listen to NPCs, read item descriptions, random books, do all the quests properly, explore the whole map etc.. So basically Blizzard has to please two completely different types of gamers which means that they can not add lots of extra "time consuming" features.
Yes, of course. But this wouldn't hinder somebody's pace of killing in the least. You could look at it at your leisure. I'm not saying it has to be some acquired skill or anything, just brainstorming
If it automatically updated your progress would be just as fast and you can just take some time once and a while to see the monsters you've encountered. Hell, I'll tell you there were some things I didn't really stop to look at in Castlevania. The Bestiary allowed me to check out some of the parts I blazed by. It's almost like "where you've been" so you don't get caught up by progression. You can always look back.
That reminds me, it should also provide the date and time you encountered this monster to give you a sense of progress.

That's kinda the idea, but I'd love to see it not... so like that. I like to stay closer to the Castlevania-veign of thinking. I think there's a lot of good ideas in those games (the series is fantastic) and it's gothic to boot.
GREAT idea. Except the loot part. In Castlevania monsters drop none to two loots, so drop the items make a part of the "collection" you make acros the game. But in diablo the loot tables are huge and drop everything a monster can drop is not the intention of the game.
But of course, a bestiary that shows the monster name, race, some background, resistances, weakness, skills, how many you've killed.. Very cool stuff to add in the game, really.
Castlevania is so great.... It (together with FF Tactics A2 and Zelda Phantom Hour Glass) made my DS one of the best platform i've ever played.
This sounds like a great idea. I'd love the notion that when you encountered a new demon, or talked to a certain NPC, you'd get a new "entry" in your bestiary.

If determined by monster type, it could also mean no pole arm drops from a quill rat, which would be a realism plus. If not, it would mean no heavily farmed mobs like in wow, something that was never fun was hunting for mobs with a valuable drop... each system has an upside

Yeah, most definitely. There is always a cost-benefit analysis that would be needed in order to really figure out the fine details.

Yeah, the loot table would be a long-shot. However, I can only imagine that people will be making loot tables on sites though... similar to what people did with WoW. Sites like thottbot and wowhead popped up to help the casual player get through quests with ease and know which bosses were best to farm.
Either way, though, asking for loot-tables is a bit much, but merely an example of what we saw in some of our other favorite games (or mine, at least :D)

Its called a Pokedex haha.....
Its a nice idea but there really isn't any reason for it in the game
For all we know something like this could already be in the game.
I certainly hope so. The problem I foresee is that they'll find it of trivial significance because of the achievement system. I'd personally rather have this than that.

i'm not too sure if I agree entirely with this slimmed down idea that Blizzard is using in their game development. I'm not saying that Diablo should go the whole way and go all Oblivion on our asses, but I often find in games, its the few querky and seemingly unnecessary aspects which add longer playabiilty. I know this is an ARPG, and not an RPG... but we need more than just forward, back, and attack
Where do you draw the line?.. if you wanted to get nit picky about it you could argue that lore and quest logs dont add to the gameplay either - but it adds to the immersion

People in that bnet thread do not respect Diablo.
