Take a look at the lower right of the character equipment sheet (next to the foot):
It's been confirmed by Bashiok to be something they call 'the Talisman'. It's obviously not an equippable item and looks like a button, which will most likely bring up this interface:
As you can see, the one in the new screenshot appears to have two of the 'fields' blacked out. Whether they are empty (like opened lids) or something is put into them is a mystery. The purpose of the Talisman is also a mystery, and Blizzard does not intend to reveal it for now. What we know, is that those rectangle (skill) runes are not related to it in any way.
Well its possible, the new unannounced "purple" items will actually be talisman objects?

It's a bit late in the day so I'm just going to go off of what I know of the game implementation as it stands right now, which is of course very much a work in progress, and the implementation now is also very likely placeholder.
In the game right now, rares are yellow and uniques are orange (although it's a dark orange, almost brown).
As Jay said he was working off memory, and thought that purple might instead be reserved for some other item type we haven't talked about yet. That appears to be the case.
Regardless of all this though, there are only so many colors that work, that read differently from each other and are easily distinguished while also being easy to read, aren't annoying, etc. Purple will very likely be used for items of some type, and that's because it works and is easily distinguishable. If purple is the best color for an item type in its readability and ease of incorporation into fun and flowing game play, then that is what will be used. Game play comes first. We don't look at another game and take something simply for the sake of doing it, we're going to take something because it's a good idea and it's what will make a fun game.
On a personal note, I hope the issue is with the classic item types staying the same, and not with purple as a color being used whatsoever. I can hope.
They don't even know it themselves. But if I had to guess, purple is probably going to be reserved for quest items, because it's very important not to oversee one of them dropping and mistake it for trash.
As of now, we don't even know if the Talisman will be used in conjunction with any items at all.
or something for switching to alternate gear? (12 slots minus 3 for jewelry = 9)
like weapon switches in d2
the two blanked out could mean there's 2 items on both gear set-ups?
or maybe signals what level of inventory you've achieved (like they said that more or better bags meant more slots)
dunno

serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
A crafting faculty working along with the storyline?!
Good idea - never thought of it.
Similar to how the Horadric Cube did in Diablo II?

Hm... Yeah, I could see that. Especially with your gear all layed out like that on the sides.
I thought of it. But why would it be called "the Talisman", and kept a secret? Gear switching is kinda a standard feature. It's even been confirmed I'm pretty sure.
Nah I doubt it has anything to do with the bags. It's a button that brings up an interface.
Well, what would you guess it is? It would make sense to assume it interacts with items somehow because the UI window shows all of your items and equipment. It appears to have nodes for reasons not explained yet. Maybe it only works with certain kinds of items- like skill runes?
Similar to how the Horadric Cube did in Diablo II?
Remember the unused quest item from D1 called Map of the Stars? It was meant to have a strong gameplay and storyline purpose. Something about planets aligning so that you can reach and defeat Diablo. A speculation, though I mean't something along those lines. Something that works with the story in a way but is a gameplay mechanic.

It's not laid to the sides - that's a screenshot from Blizzcon. I just used it because it had a close-up to the Talisman.

like skill runes?
I already said in the OP that it does NOT work with the skill runes. Bashiok has 100% confirmed that.
Do you understand that it does not look like that anymore? The Talisman is placed completely on the side and away from things. And the items are NOT on the sides like they used to be.
was looking for different states of the thing (other than filled in completely or just those two empty holes) and happened across this:
could just be spreading misinformation, but eh.. just throwing it out there.
the page it's on is not in english so i couldn't tell how they determined those labels.
it's in google images if you do a search for diablo 3 inventory

I doubt it since the items in the talisman subinterface have their own background colors themselves, I see what looks like some rare boots and a bunch of magic items.

Why can you only wear 2 rings and 1 necklace? I'm pretty sure I could fit at least 3-5 rings on most my fingers but I guess +40 to all skills would get a bit unbalanced and getting a grip on that trusty axe could become some what of an issue:)
Quite plausible. Maybe they just don't want to make it obvious from the design straight away.
Remember that they were mentioning some really important customization mechanics that they don't plan to reveal yet. This looks like it might be one of them.
Either way, we can't really hope for anything substantial until Blizzcon.
Talismans IMO have to bee keyed into the new item quality.
Like different Talismans produce different stats on a unknown item like Ancient quality or something.
Like for example you have 12 Talismans slots and there might be 30 all together and depending on the order you put them in while wearing these new item quality it will produce different stats.
Now this is a primitive example but it should be speculation. Could be the new rune word system.
Just a thought. Trying to think outside the box.
From the Blizzcast 8 but bringing it here.
