Not me. I enjoyed the fact that wealth was accumulated through skillful trading and not mindless grinding. If gold is worth anything, some assholes with 12 hours a day to play will automatically become uber (remind you of any games? cough Wo..)
I completely agree with that, the D2 economy was great.
It gave the players more control over the game, it let them decide prices for items, and introduced bartering and trading.
And yeah....people with no lives will become uber if the D3 economy is anything like WOW.
Not to say that didn't happen in D2, but anyone could randomly stumble upon rare items, or rare runes.

your right walleye, the game is not ruind. im sorry for saying it. but it is definatley not what it used to be and thats for sure. trading any godly items is pratically impossible without d2jsp
Wait so you acknowledge a broken system where you can only acquire the best items through a 3rd party site.
BUT you defend that system up, down, left, and right?
Having gold as a currency will have little difference from having runes. The only difference is it is a universal standard, and now people might actually sell lesser items and uniques instead of just dropping them in "free" games, or selling them to the npc.
Well i beleive they are going to have a auction house similar to that of WOW. And I think Blizzard wants a better system for trades and currency for D3. They have stated that they want gold to have more meaning and to create a better trading system. In D2 just trying to find someone to trade with was a pain in the butt and too you away from playing. They are going to do something different well just have to wait and see what it is.
Anyone who says that using gold is a bad system because people with tons of time will just grind it out seem not to understand that that is a problem with item trading (as in D2) as well. The people with the best items and most wealth were usually the "assholes" who spent 12 hours a day mfing. No matter what trade system you have, the richest will be those with the most time.

That's not even true. Because you can MF items all day that are useful off the bat. Gold is not useful per se. So basically, if you can grind a huge amount of gold a day, that fact will make the prices higher, since you have no-life customers who can afford that. The price for gold won't be set by some invisible authority, the more it is available, the higher the prices will be to compliment that trend. In other words, nobody will sell you a godly item for the amount of gold that is possible to obtain in one day of grinding.

true, and item for item trade is just way more fun anyhow.
Gold should be worthless, the same as it is now. For repairs, and gambling. Thats how Diablo works.

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...
A glimpse at how gold came to be used in real life explains why it is useful in D3 as well. There is no reason why Blizzard can't incorporate a hybrid system of barter, gold, and I would like to see silver added as well so to make gold more rare and valuable, you can also incorporate gems, weapons etc. It would make the game I think more fun.
From Peter Schiff's book Crash Proof
THE ORIGIN OF MONEY
Before the development of money as we know it, and going
back to ancient times, trade was facilitated using the barter system.
Like our friends from Chapter 1, Farmer Jones and Farmer
Chang, one of whom grew oranges and needed apples while the
other grew apples and needed oranges, they simply traded one
product for the other.
However, the barter system was cumbersome and time consuming.
For example, if Farmer Chang wanted to buy a
chair, he needed to find a chair maker who wanted oranges. As
a result, people soon realized the practicality of finding one
commodity in their particular culture that would be accepted
in exchange for any other good or service. That became the
first money, and it existed in such diverse forms as sheep and
cattle in ancient times or beads made from seashells, called
wampum, which the Indians took in exchange for the island
of Manhattan. A more recent example was the use of cigarettes
as money by American GIs in Europe following World
War II.
What these different forms of money all had in common was
that they represented an agreed-upon material value. As such,
money facilitated the exchange of goods and services, made division
of labor possible, and generally increased productivity
and standards of living. The more easily exchanged the money
was, the more vigorous the economy. As civilization advanced,
societies narrowed down the varieties of money to types that
worked best, and the commodities that were almost universally
selected were gold and silver.
Although gold is going to be valuable, I don't think they're going to make it to the point where you can buy top-end gear with it. I know people will hate this comparison, but in WoW you need to work in PvE/PvP for gear, but need money for enchantments and gems. Its a pretty stable system and one that could be used somewhat in D3. Its not like, oh I grinded that dungeon for 12 hours, I'm going to get my awesome gear and just rape everyone in the vicinity, but at the same time it is neccessary if you want to be a top-end player.
There's a silhouette drawn on it to portray the proportion of a player standing next to it, so it's obviously an asset. Also, the way it looks like a 45" tile, is a dead giveaway. It's almost certainly a chunk that will be randomly placed at appropriate locations, which corresponds with the talk about random adventures, if you remember them saying how you can find a caravan, or an abandoned house or maybe that thing.
I totally think so. But at the same time I'd like to see some items that are so godly and epic that gold is pretty much useless in comparison. Like an item that's only equal in a trade is another epic item.

The only way Blizzard could make the Gold the currency in D3 is to make a system way more gold dependant than before.
- Auction House (battle.net system which people could put stuff on sail for gold even when logged off)
- Make gold very much more rare or easy to pickup from mobs. (I don't see myself loot every gold from the thousands of monsters i just killed) (auto-gold pickup, drops only from certain mobs/boss?)
- Respeccing (With the new skill trees Blizzard are implementing, i just feel like respeccing will be possible. But shouldn't be too easy (not free) to do.
- Quest reward -> Gold! (if it ends at a NPC / drops from the mob or chest like The Countess)
- Mercenaries : That's one of a good way to make money worth something. Mercenaries need to be much stronger and cost much more (comparing economy here). So losing ur Merc would make you angry.

Speaking of gems.. does anyone know what is going on with that gem mine from the earlier concept art?
It obviously looks like an asset that will be placed randomly in the terrain. Might be a part of a random quest.
A lot of concept art has yet to be attached to in-game footage or explained. I don't think the gem mine has been mentioned other than the art.
