although I know some of you are not...,I was a HUGE fan of naming items in LOD.
Especially when your original godly item became a mainstream dupe and suddenly your name was everywhere! (who doesn't remember AO_ITH)
Ever been in a trade with someone and he shows you a damn good item with your name on it that you have not seen for ages? It is beyond funny when an item finds it's way to it's original master.
Whenever I find anything in D3 that is of value, I'm slapping my name on it, while it may look "ugly" to some, and others feel it is needless. I will always continue to name the godlies I find.
It really is very rare to have an item find it's way back to you by chance, they say when you love something......
Being able to name items gives off a feeling of connection between the player and the game.
That's what it adds.
And like Shisou said- it's a lot of fun.
Kenelm@ "Considering it really didn't add anything to the game, except having ridiculous names added on items, such as xXxDESTRUCTORKILLxXx's Grandfather, and that sort of thing, which kinds of ruins everything."
It's a game.
And removing the ability of naming items won't stop people from naming their characters with ridiculously funny names.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Yes, it would be neat, but not in the way we had it in D2. Like, with the new form of crafting that Blizz haven't introdiced yet you can carve out your name in the item, but the more powerful an item is, the harder it is to do. Then, if it passes into some one else's hands he too can do the same and so on, until you have an epic list of owners. That would make it more like a relic, not just a crap named item. However, I think it wouldn't be practical if it was shown like in D2, more like another window opening to see from whom to whom the item has been passed.
For an example of such an item think of the Deathstick wand from the 7th Harry Potter book, it has been passed on for centuries, except there are no names carved on it, but you get the idea.
Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking when you went through your explanation! I'm a huge Harry Potter fan as well. ^^;
But yeah, this is most def a good a idea. I never named my items in D2 except for my Sorc. I think she was the only one I did that with because she was my main.

That is a marvelous idea Battle Mage!
Bring back the ability to name items! Once someone has carved their name into something, a little honorific box shall appear somewhere on the item. When ever someone adds their name to the item you will see it, aside from that it could also show the time and date of when the item was personalized. This way you can be certain as to who found it.
They could implement a system where certain bonus's are given for naming and item, with different levels. For example standard text should be white in color (easy as hell to achieve) while text that was say Red or Gold would add a specific bonus to the item when that user is using it (but the red or gold text would involve some impossible tasks to achieve)
Also It would give a slight bonus , critical attack for example to any other user that wields the item.
Now not only do we have a personalized item, with a history of many of it's owners, it also adds a practical, useful bonus because you inscribed your name on it.
I was not really a huge fan of seeing things like "BAHAHASAMU's ENIGMA so I hope they decide to hide the owners name list. DUSK SHROUD"
It should only be accessible when you want to see it.
I like this idea a lot!! I also think since the character names would be hidden, there should be some sort of prefix or suffix that denotes that the item has been inscribed. Such as Timeless Sword of Ancients, or Mithril Armor of Infinity.

Yes good idea! and the number of times the item has been inscribed in each category will directly affect the bonus multiplier.
10 white inscriptions X1.5-2.0 critical attack
10 red inscriptions +500-1000 def
10 Gold inscriptions + 2-3 to all Skills
1 Inscriptions total = prefix Aged
10= Antique
25= Enduring
50 = Decrepit
100 = Forgotten
250 = Ancient
500 = Fossilized
750 = Ageless
1000 = Gods ( I couldn't think of a good one for 1K)
Basically something like that. Possibly 1000 max might be too high (that a lot of names)
Naming an item would be interesting if you got random effects placed on the item based on the sequence of letters you chose. But the sequence would never yield the same results twice.
It was a damm fine feature.....but shit man....it sucked when i was trading for that perfect uber item and then realize when the guy shows it to me its named....and not even with a cool name...it would be like some near perfect coa(so probably not duped) and its named by some tard who called his character xXxNoobsRgayxXx.......if we can get the option to unname something would be a nice addition to this feature
[quote name='Kenelm']I'd seriously love to see this thing removed, or changed so that named items are bound to the character.quote]
Personalized items should be bound to the character that personalized it. I agree with this. I think the amount of items you can personalize should be unlimited. I have always personalized my good gear. I even remade characters just so I could have all the pieces to that character bear the same name. That was a hassle in my opinion. Unlimited naming is what I hope for. They should also make able the ability to personalize rings and amulets. I hated that when I found a sweet ass rare ring that I knew I was never going to trade but not be able to make my mark on it.
If they do not make the items bound to the character after personalization then they should provide a way to remove a name from the item. It did kill the trade value of items.
I disagree that any kind of stats or bonus be applied to a personalized item. It should serve no other purpose than showing a person "this is my gear and no it is not for trade which is why I put my name on that som'bitch. It is my gear and no one else can use it."
I loved naming items and I hope they bring it back in some form or another in D3.
Something just came to mind. I started a thread about it a while back.
It's a bit off topic but still pertains to this. I think
If when you personalize an item depending on the type of item(shield/helm/boot), quality of item(magic/rare/unique), character that personalizes the item. Have that item then turn into a set item with a bonus according to your character.
If you don't get what I am saying I'll explain.
You are playing as a Barbarian. You find a unique barb helm. You personalize it and in the process the item grants +10 life and becomes a set item. Bearing the name of that character and is only useable by that character(soulbound). You also find a nice set of rare boots. You personalize them and it grants +50 def vs missles. The item becomes a set piece with that character name and is soulbound. With both pieces equipped you gain a partial set bonus.(+40 life, +1 barb skills, +100 def vs missles) The affix that is gained on the item would differ between rare, magic or unique. It would also differ depending on what you choose to personalize.(weapon/armor/belts) Set items cannot be personalized.
Set a limit of 3 items that can be personalized.
You may all think this is a horrible idea but I can see how it would be an awesome feature and would give more merit to naming an item after your character. Sorry if this was off topic but I think it is a good idea and I'd like to see it implemented.

Yeah and I also hope that kind of names won't be possible in D3.. there should be some restrictions to the names.
Yeah and I also hope that kind of names won't be possible in D3.. there should be some restrictions to the names.
Thats for sure...hell I remember when people coudl have any characters in there name by copy pasting it from word or notepad....fuck that was annoying lol
Every time the item is equipped and actually used by a character (like 10 swings of a sword or 20 blows on a helmet), the name gets added to its history. The last registered user's name is on the title but you can do something to see that item's entire user history.
This would play into the whole "Ancient" or "Eternal" point system as well. I think it might be fun to wind up with one of your old items again or find one of your friends' characters had used it in the past!
I actually like this idea, but it feels rather unpolished and needs some thinking over to work, if it were to be implemented. Like, what determines what extra bonus the items get, etc. At least making all your personalized items give an extra bonus when worn together. Unlike sets though, it would only give a bonus to the actual character that named it. With that, we of course need a limit to how many items can be named. 3 sounds good to me.
That, or just make all items you crafted yourself automatically have your name on them (You made it god damn it, of course it'd be inscribed with your name:cool:).
Of course it would need polishing and greater minds than mine to make it work and be balanced.
What determines the bonus of the craft or personalization would be many things.
The type of item would benefit each character differently. A spiderweb sash could be better for a wizard than it is for the witchdoctor. Also the character that is doing the crafting/personalization would affect the outcome, the bonuses would be slanted towards their respective abilities. More mana for wizards and more life or strength for barb. Another factor would be the quality of the item(rare/magical/unique) Magical items could have the possibilty for multiple affixes whereas a rare or unique could gain less because the stats already on it.
I didn't state before but the base stats on the item remain and bonus affixes are attached when crafted or personalized. At least that is how I imagine it would work. Like I said it needs polishing. lol

I hope they bring the system back, I always liked it.
Though, I think they should refine it and make it more practical ... so maybe you can remove a name, or make it easier to name something rather than only havving four chances to name something.
