Idea 1:
Well, this is just my quick idea for stats in Diablo 3, seeing that it may have aut-stats for each class(which is kinda lame, but at the same time, a good way to keep things balanced).
Go back to the roots, Diablo 1.
I remember in Diablo 1 you could only put so many points into each stat, so why not build on that original system? Say, so many points in each stat per level, or, a stat can only be so high at lvl's 10, 15, 20, etc?
I haven't really put too much thought into it, but I think that if somebody does, they can make a good, balanced system with it, and still let people choose their stats.
Idea 2:
Why not have customized stat increases for each level, plus some points to put into the stats of your choice.
But I doubt there's any point in discussing stats now. They'll stay auto.
There was never any point in discussing stats or complaining about anything D3-related. New Blizzard has their own, flawed, vision of this sequel, and nothing anyone says is going to change their mind. They will act to correct these flaws if, and only if, a negative opinion is widespread enough that it might impact the sales of the game. Which we all know, thanks to the millions of WoW-era gamers, will never happen.

"Because "half-assed" is not a "style"." - DragoonWraith, champion of character customization and legimitate art direction in D3
I can see what your saying. Kinda makes sence I suppose, but alll characters would turn out the same in the end so why bother?
Well, not if u didn't put an absolute limit on them. Like in d1, yes, all maxed characters had the same stats, but what I'm saying is to have a cap for stats to prevent them from going too high, for example, sorc's with nothin but vitality... So like, at max lvl, you can only have up to so much in each stat, but there's no way you can max out all of your stats...
Dont you hate it when you reach level 70+ and realise that you fucked up your stats and skill tree so you have to start a new character again............... well i think they should have an optional quest where the reward is you can redo your stats and skills for so many points eg. when you finish the quest your reward will be you are able to can 5 stat points from one attribute and put it on another and same with the skill tree. This quest should be hard and challeging and i dont mind if it is a bit time consuming its better than starting a whole new character. Or another option is you can give a large amount of gold to minus a stats from one attribute and put it on another
Fixed stats is not that bad u.u' many rpgs out there have and it works well. They did it because they want to focus on the passive skill system, that theorically will allow a supeior custumisation.
Of course, all of us must wait to the game's release and some time playing to make a fair judge of D3's mechanics. But i'm really optimist about the game.
Wait, what? You mean, you don't play a role of a hero that vanquishes Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal? Thus it being a Role Playing Game? Man, I wonder what game I've been playin...
And yea, I don't think the fixed stats are all that bad either. But it's still always better to be able to customize. Which sprung up yet another idea, why not have customized stat increases for each level, plus some points to put into the stats of your choice.
Stalker, I'm sorry to inform you, but the real definition of the term "RPG" has little to do with your own made up definition of the word, because your own silly definition includes each and every game ever released and is not useful as far as genre categorizing goes, which is where all these terms came from in the first place.
D2 is a hack and slash RPG. Its not a true RPG. If you want a example of a proper RPG look to Baldurs gate series, The Elder Scrolls are good examples of western RPGs. Good examples of jap RPG's are final fantasy and dragon warrior. Those games are far different then Diablo, but thats not to say diablo doesnt share some qualities that those true RPGs have.
World of Warcraft, WAR, ALL good oriental rpgs (FF series, DQ series etc..).
I kno all this game are VERY different from Diablo, still, those are all rpgs and thats what matter, cuz all this games gameplay are based at this kind of mechanics, wich must be mathematically well maded.
And I don't have to prove D2 Is a rpg. 99% of the game reviews classify D2 as a ''RPA'' or ''Action RPG'' wich is just a RPG sub-cathegory.
And I've no doubts the auto status is positive. In all my life as a player i meet 2, and only 2, game with a good status system, and thats really not D1 nor D2. So it's your turn... name one game with a status system that can bring more positive aspects then negative ones.

Actually, its a subcategory of action games. See the action comes first.
How about Diablo 1 and 2. I thought the stats system was perfectly fine. Some bugs here a little annoying that you couldn't subtract stat points but as long as you were careful with where you put what it worked out fine.
Fallout's stats aren't bad either. And KoTOR II's stat system is alright. A lot of stats systems are good.

If anything, Diablo is an ARPG, Action Role Playing Game. But that might be pushing it since the role-playing part of the game is so insignificant, unfortunately. "Oriental" (I'm assuming you mean Japanese, since China doesn't pump out games, along with most other Asian countries like Bhutan, Tibet, Russia, etc.) RPG's are formally known as JRPG's- Japanese Role Playing Games, because they have an obviously different style than, say, Elder Scrolls or Baldur's Gate, and often do not allow stat allocation (most battle experiences are based on more abstract things like FFXII's License/Gambit system, FFVII's Materia system, FFVIII's Junction system, Grandia II's Coin system, etc.)
Erm, anyway, I consider Diablo II more of just Action, really, since if you're online, at least to my knowledge of ten years, I've never met someone who reads through the conversations everytime, or even most of the time. Or anyone that names their characters with names that would indicate role playing. I use Latin name conventions, though. Hm..

Like formerly stated, they're so completely different that they can't all just be labeled "RPG"'s. It doesn't do any of them justice.

Status, like, online status? AFK and such? Or status as in "Poisoned" or "KO'ed"..?
Fallout's stat system isn't bad at all, its one of the best stat systems ever conceived. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (or maybe you are talking about FO3 which i haven't played yet?)

For me diablo is more RPG then a action game. The excencial point in this question is what you have to master and what is really important to become a good player.
In action games you must master reflexes, skill and perseption.
In a RPG you must master you understanding of game's mechanic and strategies, like creating good character builds (or just learn then by guides and communities), good equipament sets and kno the right way to deal with the right problem. In a online experience have a good business skill will also make you a superior player.
Of course, diablo have all those factors, but the RPG one is far more important. No matter how good you're a, a noob can own you if hes playing with a full set hammerdin and you are a blue set noob build character.
For the fact that diablo 2 is almost just about put the right points and get the right items i assume it's much more rpg then action.
And i said Oriental because theres some good korean games too. And i kno they are totally diferent. But as FFXII have the license system, D3 will have the new passive skill system to replace stats. It works very well in wow and will problably work in D3 (those 2 are not that different you kno).
And i just misspelled i mean Stats (the character's statistics!).
