i seemed to notice in d2 that most classes the best way to kill something was to spam one spell over and over again. in d3 gameplay vid, they showed them using a wide range of spells, but is that really going to be what most people do? i think it should be more like wow, how you have a ton of spells that you always use...not just one good spell that is really all you need. thats not to say dont have the tree, but make like lvl 6 spells still useful at lvl 80. but like i said, only some classes had this problem, so dont go whining that there are lot of low lvl spells on you pally or wutever that u still use.

I don't think WoW used many more skills than D2. Yes more, but not to a great extent.
I played a mage... In raids it was frostbolt frostbolt 3 hours later frost bolt...
In pvp there were a bunch of spells (even when fighting weaker mobs solo) such as frost nova, one of my armors, and the occasional ice lance and blink to escape or maneuver, but it was essentially 4-5 spells.
Without forcing mutliple tree specs, I'm not sure how they can enforce a use of many spells. An armor or buff could be one, a DD, an AoE. a %dmg like static, and a movement spell like teleport. I do hope to see more being used such as the barbarian using that stun to lower shields, maybe magic will involve similar strategy, but without needing two different damage types and hence an additional DD and AoE, well then it will probably be something like 6 spells.
I think there is a possibility of channeled spells being more useful in D3 than WoW because with our instant cast normal spells, a channeled spell doing much better damage over time would be nice for when grouped and you don't need to maneuver as an alternative to the instant cast while running.
