In D2: lod if you didn't have unique items your character was doomed to extremely weak. Unique items should definately be a lot more unique. Have hundreds of unique items, they must be extremely hard to find... They cant be made into an every day find, I dont want to go around and find people with full sets of the best unique armor, even people that play 24/7. There should be:
Normal = Average
Rare = For few months, rare items should be the main type of armor people use.
some sort of magical class of weapons they can just call it magic. = average sort of class that is a litle harder to find than rare items but not impossible.
Set
(Also extremely rare to find..something you cant find by playing for an hour, think about how you just found a unique or a set - you go to a trading room and people say wow this is hard to come by. In D2 & lod - sets and uniques, especially sets were jokes).
Unique = BEST
Just spreading Idea - I know it's kind of an obvious concept to many..but felt like posting it. Set and Unique items need to have meaning to them

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
I think a full set of Sets should overpower a full set of Uniques, but Uniques overpower single pieces of Set items. That way, Sets are worth what they ought to be and making a hardcore character doesn't take an hour of research into the best Uniques.
Uniques were good they way they were in D2, some could stand to be a little more rare, and some a little less. I mean honestly some of those by the time you found them you'd never use them.
I'm not saying that because of bots, i mean with no effort I will find some things (that should be good in a balanced game) But the standards are raised to the point that the best isn't far from common...its hard to get SUPER ELITE UNIQUES but not as hard as it should be.

again im putting this down to bots n duping. Also lets not forget the sheer number of players on bnet so obviously lots of ppl will find them n trade them etc.
But just say if you're playing diablo on single player. you can play it for years without finding a "super elite unique".
Also the majoritiy of those really common uniques are worthless anyways and worth nothing.
I for one enjoyed the itemization of D2 classic more then what was given us in LoD. If you want to talk about really unique items, how about that super rare combination of just the right prefixes and suffixes to make that insane "rare" weapon or piece of armor. "Uniques" were of course in the game and were great items but there were times that they could be out shown by a truly one of a kind "rare" item. It wasn't until the exceptional and elite uniques came out that they became the defacto best items in the game. Runewords I will put into the same category since they were essentially unique items that you created.
We already know that there will not be runewords in the expansion (not sure what the runes we saw in the gameplay video will be for since they say they are not linked to itemization, /shrug). So I for one wait eagerly for more information about D3's loot.
Edit: Just curious, what was the best item you ever personaly found (not counting bots here :P) Was it a perfect 1.08 vamp gaze? A Zod? For me it was a 15 IAS/ 39% ED jewel.

I agree, I want the unique items to be so rare where it forces me to play more and more :). I LOVE DIABLO!!
What about those who play single-player, then item rareness has no bearing on trading, because there was no trading. I think the drops were rare enough, I could never get some of the uniques and sets that I was trying to get. (IE: Never got Immortal Kings armor, and it was the last item I needed for the set, kept doing runs all the time hoping to get it and never did). If they made items too rare it would suck to almost never get any good equipment.

finding crap is already ridiculously hard...i think that you should eventually (playing time for ex) be able to have every item in the game or at least trade up or buy it
if they got rid of bots and dupes tehre would be hardly any uniques... like stone of jordan.... hella unique nobody tought about it until someone got it and was like holy shit ill dupe this its worth a shitload... and it goes downhill from there
Dudes, I loved set items. Getting a full set always made me feel... complete. But once I saw that uniques and runewords outdid sets by a long shot, I was sorta crushed... So I really hope they have more and better sets, and more ways to make them work with different combos, for more customization. I would love to see sets that could actually rival unique/crafted based armories. And I'm guessing I will.
But finding full sets could take forever... seriously.

Yep, that posts basically summed it up.
-Battle.net had dupes.
-Single Player fair-playing had no dupes.
-Uniques in Battle.net were everywhere.
-Uniques in Single Player were 'OMG!'.
-Getting rid of dupes = Rare items in Battle.net being as rare as rare items in Single Players.
It is hard to compare things like drop rate at this stage in development because we have so little information on D3. Will there be boss runs similar to D2? Will there be a class with a teleport skill to make this easier?
That being said I do hope they concentrate a whole lot on removing the bots and dupes. This is why I was curious to hear about all of your presonal best drops. As for the bots and dupes that flooded the market, hell, I'd be willing to pay a small monthly fee to keep them out (but disregard that, whole different discussion that doesn't need to muddy the water here :P) Get rid of the dupes and then strike a balance when it comes to drops.
Drop rate aside I hope an itemization strategy is used that does not have uniques at the top of the heap. For me it was so much more fun to get a rare item and just have my jaw drop when i identified it then it was thinking "I have got to get a perfect stormshield to finish my meteor sorc build, or I just need a Ber to complete my Enigma." Maybe it was just me, maybe not.

Only reason theyre so common is due to people who have bots running 24/7 and duping. prevent hacks and then it will be good.

There is a lot I haven't looted. It could be balanced some but the Super Uniques are pretty unique.

I don't want everybody having the same unique items after 4-5 months.
But finding full sets could take forever... seriously.
Over confidence is the rot.
