Okay, that have said that it will not be pay to play directly and that fact that there is an offline means that it is obviously not pay to play. Offlne means you can play without a connection to the internet, which means they cant charge you for playing on the internet because you wont be on the internet. Which means you have the capability to play offline without doing what? Without having to pay. So therefore you can play without the pay.

They can make online P2P without making offline P2P, and removing LAN points to preventing online in offline.
But the game will not technically be pay to play. Either way you shoot it the game will not be pay to play, it MAY be online pay to play, but the game itself and all it's glorious content will be free to play.

To pernunz
Less piracy - less free advertisement
No LAN - decrease in buyers out of the SP LAN-only market
No LAN - bad sign pointing to insecurity in the game + company greediness
No LAN - would lead to private servers or something else to replace LAN for pirates
Why is it that everyone's under the assumption that Blizzard is trying to milk every person for every penny?
Blizzard currently has more money than god, not because they're greedy as sin, but from WoW alone, at 9 million subscribers and 14.95 a month, that's an average 134,550,000 a month they bring in from subscriptions alone.
They spent 100k on the development of World of Warcraft, and 135k on the development of Burninc Crusade.
Just because they make money, doesn't mean they went through every tactic to be greedy with every penny.

Why is it that everyone's under the assumption that Blizzard is trying to milk every person for every penny?
Because LAN is a traditional, essential part of most games that have internet functionality. Not adding it under the pretext of "takes too much time" when LAN requires no support and has been implemented for ages is a bit dodgy, and, highly suspicious.
If people want to prevent people from using LAN, it means they want to put them into Bnet. And why would they want that? To show bnet as the only way to play online with anybody, e.g., the only way to force everyone to buy the game unless they play pure SP only. Why else? To prevent SP LAN trade?
Wilson: I can't say 100% that there will be no charges, but our goal is to sell a boxed product. The problem is we're multinational, so each individual market is different. The boxed model works in Asia for example, but not everywhere. If we publish a financial model then we have to do it simultaneously for each region [in Asia], and it's hard to say what each will look like. What I can say that a boxed game is our goal, not a subcription game, though I can't say for absolute certain that there will never be any fees. Just that it's not our goal.

Or to prevent the prevalent hacking and unfairness to the company... LANing isn't a bad idea, but it's becoming more and more obsolete aside from FPS games...
The real question is, why would Blizzard want to create a game with obvious CD-Key flaws? Which company in their right mind would want to knowingly create a program with a very strong ease of hacking? There are several programs out there that can act as a "ghost" LAN network, so you'd never have to go on B-net, you can hack the crap out of the game, AND you'd never have to pay a dime for their hard earned product. That sounds pretty fair.... supporting the company that worked hard to bring a damned good game to you, the fans.

There is an easy solution to this, then... Keep TCP/IP (which still checks for the UID), or add the UID checking system to LAN. Protecting their hard-earned product is very important.

If this is true it SUCKS! I was looking forward to playing lan with my brother, thats what we did with diablo2 for hours and hours!!! I dont always have internet access so i really hope this isnt final or it will ruin the game for me ....
No internet access? Could have fooled me with that post.
I never used LAN so I really don't care, and most games hardly include LAN at all anymore. Sorry for people who did use LAN though.

Private servers of Diablo would be ridiculously more easy to make you'd think since the solo part of the game is completely client sided.
