wrong, it sold a lot, but these days things are different, more people know about piracy and the multiplayer possibilities it brings if the game has lan capabilities (you can play any game that supports lan over the internet even if it has cd-keys, but i wont tell how for obvious reasons)
the guys at blizzard aren't stupid, if they know they can prevent piracy by removing lan, if they know they can make a little extra buck to make people in the same house buy more then 1 copy so they can play together, they will try to get as much money from diablo as they can without having p2p, and not supporting lan is a small step to do so.
Diablo 3 needs to have LAN multiplayer. The Internet is not buttery smooth in every corner of the world. My connection is terrible for gaming. I always prefer playing over LAN with my friends. I am in college right now; it is infinitely more convenient to just start up a LAN game than to connect to an online service. Also, depending on where you live around campus, many gaming services (including Battle.net) are often blocked. They are flagged as "waste of time/bandwidth". Even when it is allowed, it's not like I have this blazing T1 line.
Not having LAN play drastically decreases the value of the game for me. Why is everyone petitioning over the art style? It is this that everyone should be petitioning for. If there really is no LAN play in the final product, I will fully endorse any private projects designed to replicate Battle.net on private servers. Sorry, Blizzard; exerting this much control is not good for anyone.

Removing lan does not get rid of piracy, it gets rid of people being able to play online using Hamachi.
I'm not buying D3 anymore because of this. Relying on a service which I've never liked to play with my friends isn't something I'm willing to do with an action-rpg. I don't care how 'refined' this new Bnet is.
wow.... just because LAN is gone,, jesus christ ppl are poor, buy a freakin router and modem, connect all ur comps to the router.. install d3 on the comps and play ONLINE AND MAKE YOUR OWN GAME.( private)

You either live at home with your parents or have a ridiculously awesome job. The rest of the word is not so fortunate. It astounds me that you can criticize people for their financial status. Get over yourself. Even if an Internet connection is available, relying on some server hundreds of miles of way to play a game with a couple friends in the same room makes no sense whatsoever.

If someone has a computer, chances are that he or she has internet connection.

Did you even read my post? Having an Internet connection is one thing. Having a good Internet connection is something totally different and costs quite a bit of money. Personally, I run off student Internet, which is sufficient for my web needs but terrible for gaming. I don't have the money to upgrade to my own faster ISP. I don't have the money to purchase a dozen routers/switches and construct a LAN. On top of all that, there are whole weeks where the Internet goes down. You just have to accept that the Internet is not a happy experience in every part of the world.
So, when my Internet goes down, I am not allowed to play LAN games with my friend? I am becoming weary of all the arrogance I am getting from people about how I should just "stop complaining and play on Battle.net". I think Battle.net is a great service for everyone, but for many (like myself) LAN play is just superior. So, unless you plan on sending me a $1000 check to upgrade my Internet for a few years, stop preaching about Battle.net's "solution" to the no-LAN problem.

Why not? There's virtually no difference.
Come over to my place, and I'll show you. Ever heard of "lag"?

If your internet connection sucks, you're going to have to accept disadvantages.

So your internet connection sucks. If they want to capitalize on internet connection, then tough. Internet isn't always happy, like you've said.

Actually, it does in a way. Because of the way LAN connects, differently than that of Battle Net or Open Net, it doesn't have any way to check a redundancy in CD keys. Therefore, once the game comes out, technically, everyone could just wait for it to come out for download from many torrent sites, load up Hamachi, download it once, and play with your friends using the "LAN" capabilities potentially using the same CD Key, and nobody's ever the wiser.
That's how LAN bypasses security.

I just think it's a poor move. I'll never understand why sequals to things always leave out at least one important feature that was useful in the first (or second) installment.
The issue about money makes sense. Many people do not want to pay for high speed internet, or have no access to it. I live near NYC and only recently had high speed coverage come to my area. Also, more and more providers are putting a cap on monthly internet use, which would make LAN a much more desirable option.
I really don't think it would hurt their financial gains at all to include LAN option.

D3 Pros: Outdoors environment, night time environment, female Barbarian, rune spell system, the Wizard class
D3 Cons: Fantasy architecture, fantasy armor, fanstasy weapons, no shaders.
Luckily our hacker friends will find a way to play the game on LAN, expect it a few months after the game.
Probably not too much work either, they'll redirect the game server to a user created one on their computer and have friends connect to that.

And I'm sure this is one of the few reasons why they've opted to try and remove LAN.

Has this been confirmed yet? If not, I have no idea why we're concluding, if it has been confirmed, so be it. If it doesn't mess the game up, and if the new B.NET works nice, I'm fine with this. I can understand if they're trying to prevent piracy and hackers.
Did you look at the link in my first post? Jay says he has no intention of adding LAN.

Why the hell is this topic still being discussed? It's a dumb assumption that it will be pay to play....I dont understand the point in continuing the discussion..

Glad to know that I have to rely on Bnet being up in order to play with my friends who spend a week out of the year at my house playing games.
Or that I have to rely on Bnet at all to play with my friends.
