Like my other thread about the inventory system http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14150 I was hoping this might become a central repository for discussing our own good ideas for implementing PvP. It is obvious that Blizzard will be watching as they really do listen.
There are a couple of schools of thought about allowing PvP at all times - even in town - and special arenas for PvP etc. Let's not debate that. Let's just stick to constructive ideas for the MECHANISM of PvP in the game in this thread at least.
------------------
Okay I have to fess sup. I had a bad experience in D2 with a PKer. In my very early days and not sure what happened but I started up a game and this dude joined and before I knew it I was dead. All a bit foggy - he disappeared somewhere, returned and whacked me.
I do experiment with PvP in the safety of my home network and we use backed up copies of characters. We often start with a hand full of skill or attribute points and we experiment with allocating these. At the finish we just restore the save file databases. I want to still be able to do this on a home network. Please don't take that away.
This will sound terribly noobish and not at all where HC PvP gamers would be going with suggestions.... I'd like to see a mechanism to experiment with PvP on battlenet, like a "trialing" or "training" mode where we can fight and kill, but not for keeps. No need to worry about loosing gear. Being able to respec my character would be good but that's a different topic for another thread.
A great way to test builds and experiment with the usage of skills but most importantly a means to wean noobs (like me...) into PvP. It might get me used to the fact that I'll die occasionally and it's not such a bad thing
------------
I'd like to see PvP implemented in such a way that there can be no surprise attacks. If I agree to PvP then certainly I will know whom my adversary will be and that he/she may attack me any time / any where and it may be a surprise attack. But the fact is that I have agreed to the PvP mode in the first place so I if I die in a surprise attack then that's my problem. Live with it.
------------
I'd like to see PvP implemented in such a way that a "win" to me is recorded as such, whether my opponent was killed or TPed out of the "arena". Leaving the fight is effectively a submission, like in MMA or WWE and counts as a win to me. From my POV it's all about "wins" and not necessarily "kills".
This might mean that I do not get any benefits of the kill, perhaps loot?, but I have a win recorded against my hero nevertheless.
How to implement this if the connections lags or gets lost I don't know.
Soft ideas I know. It's all about making PvP more accessible for people like myself on the periphery of it all.

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.
An additional idea for PvP would be to only show "wins" in a players public PvP history. This means that the 100's of times my lame character has been killed won't be known to anyone else. :D.
The advantage for me is that I will be encouraged to continue honing my (questionable) skills. The advantage for PKers is that lame heroes like me will still be around.
To ensure that people cannot extrapolate the number of defeats, the total contests would need to be unknown to other players. The number of defeats and contests could be revealed to me but not to others.
But the number one advantage of all this is that, because I know that my defeat record is secret then I have no reason to TP and then mysteriously lose my internet connection during battle. I.e. no need to gutlessly prevent a "win" being recorded for my opponent.
Additionally, what if connection is lost? Just have battlenet terminate the fight with no result recorded.

i didnt really read alot of the posts... but im just going to chuck my opinion out there....
Dont fix anything that aint broke... i say PVP should be the same as it is.. attack anyone as long as you hostile them... if a high lvl is killing you just leave game and go to another, makes you wanna work harder to get higher level and get them back in future, dont have a cry like a little baby if someone kills u
anyway... pvp was fine, no need for ideas... party/hostile people as long as there lvl 9 or what eva and kill!:cute:
pvp in some kind of way needs to be able keep a lvl 99 able to fight a lvl 45.
This is a serious question: Why?
Why should Blizzard encourage this type of behavior? Give me a few good reasons why ANY character should be able to attack someone HALF there level.

Then in your opinion it's a game for school yard bullies?
It's amazing how the PK crowd talks about how great they are yet by your own statements your not good enough to face people your own level only to pick on "defenseless noobs".

dude this aint school..............................................................
Its a GAME.... thats the thing u forget,if u die from a higher level in the game it's not the end of the world
Pkers are immature asshats who have nothing better to than fuck up other peoples gaming experience. Kinda like hackers in CS:S. Blizz realized this and will put a stop to it in D3. If you cant deal with the fact that you will have to play fair in D3, you are the baby. There are enough enemies in the game without having to worry about some level 90+ douche who says he is going to help, but then turns around and kills you. It's ridiculous.

Here's my original question again. I'll try and derail the flame fest with the few pot shots thus far. How bout an answer? Does anyone have one that doesn't involve insults? Here I am waiting to be convinced that you are right. Inform me of how being attacked by somebody twice your level improves the quality of play.

u both obviously arent diablo fans if ur worried about changing the way the game is, d3 should have things from new char's - new act's...
no need to change a game to suit YOUR needs... if so, go and make your own game
till then, stop complaining about the pvp...
You are such a cop-out.
Were not complaining about D3s pvp, you are.
I'm not even going to delve into the stupidity of your post...

Wanna duel bitch? Bring it on!Oh, wait, I have to get my computer back from the repair store... Just add to your friends, SICK_Murderface or SICKMurderface, one of the two.
Zippy, allow me to apolagize on behalf of the forums for the fact that the only defense the pk bullies can come up with is the 12 year old's equivalent of "STFU n00b." Not all pkers are like this. I'm not.
edit: And murderface, plz keep me posted on how the duel ends up. Better yet, get me a screenie of his corpse. I need a new background. :-)

haha omg, if i still played i cud destroy every1 on this site.
2 bad i quit like 2 years ago... you guys got soooooo luckayy!
Yeah, too bad you can't get into any of my games because you are not my friends list and don't know the password. LOL
I would say that 85% of the time I am in Private games just because of PK trolls. If blizzard wants me to play with people I don't know and trust then something is going to have to change!! I was PK'd just the other day because I got whacked in the back of the head while fighting Diablo, pretty cheap and annoying. he even waited till D was almost dead so he could finish him and take the drops! One of the FEW public games I played in and I got cheap shotted imagine that!!
A good example is I have had enough keys to open all 3 uber portals for a few days now. I'm waiting for there to be enough of my friends on to make all those key runs worth while.

nerd?....excuse me but we prefer the more dignified term,...Geek!
In my second paragraph in the OP I discouraged flaming. Predictable that the "kill anyone, anywhere so long as they are half my cLvl" people would jump on board. Yawn. Heard it all before.
Could we please get back on topic?
Going hostile should be mutual. A one way declaration of war isn't playing fair. I'd like to see D3 allowing a player to go hostile as in D2 but a player has to agree to this in order to become a target.
A reason to want to decline hostilities is if my hero is built for PvE. I have a sorceress with all resistances at 90 in hell and with fire wall as the main attack with chain lightning thrown in. A lot of fun and a little challenging getting monsters to run along the wall instead of briefly through it! But it is fun and helps to keep D2 fresh.
Fighting dumb monster movement AI is one thing. Against a similar level sorceress with Frozen Orb, who is circling me and avoiding my Fire Wall then my build would just suck. D2 gives us a clear choice: PvE or PvP but D3 should allow us the right to decline PvP.

-if you lose games you can lose pvp experience
--How much you lose and how much experience you gain in pvp is determined by various factors such as your opponent's level compared to your's.
-items that require you to be a certain pvp level exists and you can attain them in shops or other ways.
--Here this is here to try to get more people to pvp rather than just staging. Room/Maps
-You can choose various maps
--Each map has specifications. For example what level you need to be to unlock it. What the capacity of the map has (1v1/2v2/3v3/4v4/etc). Some map ideas that can be fun are tournaments/ring-out/etc.
-The host always set the rules
--you can set rules like have 1v1 in a 4v4 large map. free for all. 1v3. name of room. private room. banish people. etc.
-The host can invite people from the lobby.
-Games can contain spectators. (those that are not playing can view the game in various camera positions. the game bars are gone and you have full screen view. you'd have buttons to stop of course.
-after every battle, a results screen shows up and your scores(who killed who/how much/ etc/ are recorded along with the addition of experience/etc.
Servers
2 servers. free/Balanced servers.
-balanced servers try to make players as equal as possible. lower levels have higher skill dmg. they just are deprived of high level effects of skills. lower level players would have higher mana corresponding to whoever their opponent is. In teams, only the total level of the team is considered in the ratio. hp is the same for every player. it is set high to prolong the battle a bit for fairness reasons.
--balance servers dont have players drop their items or have players claim items from dead players.
-free servers do not have any restrictions like balanced servers. high level players can kill low level players very fast and claim their items. /gold.
--Also create practice field where there are mana pots spawns. players cannot die. players cannot lose hp. etc. and dummys. scarecrows. skill reset pots. whatever. this can act like a "town" and people can enter the pvp lobby through portals idk.
