- 1/3 of Blizzard North is on the team
- Minority of people complaining not surprising as they went through that themselves at Blizzard.
- Art change for gameplay reasons
- Says undead tomb they showed isn't supposed to be very gritty but they will go back and add more grit to earlier dungeons.
- Corpses faded too fast and left no aftermath feel so corpses will fade out when you move off the screen
- Deeper story
- Big plans at Blizzcon for diablo 3.
Oh SWEET, that was probably the most informative interview I've seen/read since the announcement, most of the other ones just danced around stuff we already knew.
So expect a little more dirt/texture and blood in the environments but don't expect the color or art style to change. This is probably the best of both worlds since I really like the color and environments that were shown in the trailer and adding more detail to the surfaces of the environment is defiantly not going to piss anyone off.
I was always hoping they would add more detail, whether it be specular maps, bump maps, or just more painted detail to the surfaces. I hope its a combination of all three, that would be the ideal scenario.

I could see that coming a mile away. I am still under the assumption that Starcraft fans had little impact on the actual style of Starcraft 2 and that the game went through the normal development process and came out looking like it does in the end. The textures we saw were extremely rough and un-detailed. I would expect Blizzard to go through later and "finish" them basically...
I'm most happy with what he said about the corpses disappearing. It may drive up the system specs, but I've been thinking about getting a new graphics card anyway.
This may be true of Blizzard North immediately before its closure in 2005. But none of those guys were at Blizzard North as of the shipment of the original "Diablo". Also, no more than a few were there as of the release of "Diablo II", and none of those few guys who were there were in a lead role on the project.

Not may,It will absolutely drive up the system requirements.
there will still be corpses on the ground, but I'm glad to see they are still fading out too. I could just imagine the memory and clock cycles it would take to have all of Baal's slain minions fully rendered in 3D on the ground all the time!! Or even all those zombies in the opening minutes of the game play trailer. that was quite a few dead 3D objects.

I kinda wish instead of disappearing corpses, the corpses would boil away as if being consumed by their own fell magic. We need an evil smiley!

You get to keep alot of the Blizz North team and its STILL not enough!

Well, there's the team that made the original Diablo and the foundations of
Diablo II in the first four years of the company (-1998), and the team that released absolutely nothing in their last four years (2001-). The guys he's talking about are absolutely none of the former and a good chunk of the latter.
That's a lot of good news. For once he focused on some of the stuff on the petition besides the "darkness" (which I never thought was a problem). He takes about making the textures less clean, adding more macabre elements.
Did anyone else think he was incredibly awkward? He sounded like 10 year old talking to a girl he had a crush on.
D3 is has been such a ride for me so far. Every time there's new info I go "Wtf, why would they do THAT?! That's awful" or "Wow, that's great news! I can't wait!" There's no middle ground.

D3 Pros: Outdoors environment, night time environment, female Barbarian, rune spell system, the Wizard class
D3 Cons: Fantasy architecture, fantasy armor, fanstasy weapons, no shaders.
I can't believe no one mentioned this... He practically blushed when he said "they wont let me talk about that" when he was asked about a Diablo III playable demo at blizzcon.
Judging by his reaction and answer I'm guessing there will be one.
This is the only thing that I call bullshit on. It's a "non-reason", a reason that means nothing except to justify the change to everyone else as to why the game doesn't look like Diablo III when it wasn't really needed in the first place. It doesn't explain anything, and it means no more to us that "We changed the art just cuz." If gameplay were the reason for the change from the previous art style then Diablo I and II both had terrible gameplay, this of course flying in the face of the fact that they are still both heavily played today.
Ah, well...It's nice to hear that they will "add grit" whatever that is to the earlier parts. My only concern is that I would like it to maintain a "gothic feel" that is as a part of Diablo as the "Cartoony-style" is of Warcraft. I want to see more corpses and blood and broken "things" and more evil "presence" amongst the background, which is entirely lacking from what we've seen, and which is a huge part of the atmosphere of what Diablo is. If the game doesn't have that, it doesn't matter what "grit" they add, it still won't be Diablo.

Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were also not set in a fully 3D environment. Don't think that you know everything about game development. We won't know how the game plays until we do it ourselves. Than we can judge on whether it was a good decision or not...
Thank for the notes. I absolutely hate having to watch videos instead of being able to just skim an article for what Im looking for.
Hmm... some good news in there it sounds.

Thanks for that video, that had new info and was extremely informative.
Loving the delay of disappearing corpses, even though this confirms I will need a new PC, loving pretty much everything that was mentioned.
Also I'm loving how everyone arguing about the colour/petition etc. were like "we need to get some of the blizzard north guys on to fix the art" and he basically said the main guy in charge of the overall look from the game is from Blizzard North >.<...
I'm glad they aren't drastically changing it and just excited at what we can expect from new zones/dungeons in the future.

I'm right there with you, I sandbagged on this site starting right after d3 was announced and finally registered.
now it's like everywhere you look, there is someone flaming about this graphic or that opinion.
petitions all over the place.
I GIVE UP TOO!

I envy whoever will get to play it.
