OK, this idea may seem farfetched, and I'll admit that there is very little chance of this being implemented, but I thought it sounded interesting so I thought I'd share.
Obviously, the vast majority of the Diablo community is against class-specific roles (i.e. barb tank, sorc ranged-dps, etc.). However, I thought that there could be a way to make these roles exist without resitricting each class to a WoW-like designation:
Tank gear as opposed to a tank class
DPS gear as opposed to a DPS class, and so on
This would mean a new type of loot system. Each piece of loot would be specially made with the idea of tanking, DPSing, etc. and the mods would only accomodate that role. There would be some all-around loot for soloing of course, but otherwise items' stats would reflect the role they were made for.
This way when you group up you can designate one person to tank (regardless of their class, a sorc for example could be designated the tank just as easily as the barb), they change out their gear to take on this new role and the other people in the group can work on DPS or whatever form of healing is implemented.
I know this is outlandish, so telling me so is just repetive =]

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
That's the exact same thing WoW has. There is no REAL tank class/heal class because Paladins, warriors, druids can tank, and druids, paladins, priests, shaman can heal.
They all have DPS trees as well, it's just that if you CAN tank you're expected to, if you CAN heal you're expected to, if all you can do is DPS then they want you to DPS or crowd control.
I hate all those roles, I just want to kill things. That's part of the hacknslash environment.
melee characters need the ability to be pummeled on since they have to get close to do their damage. so aren't melee characters in diablo 2 essentially tanks in a way? seeing as their role is to do damage and they have to get close and take damage to do damage...they don't need anything beyond obeying the current laws of melee vs ranged to accomplish having a tank type role. They kind of go hand in hand. Of course there should be no taunt or things like aggro.
Dude, go play diablo 2 again. Play a barbarian, spec him with shout, BO, cencentrate, Iron skin and give him the IK set - there you have a tank.
Spec him with Shout, BO, Frenzy, give him two one handed swords and you have dps.
Theres always been huge variation avaliable in skills and gear dude, and I'm sure it will stay this way, though diablo first and foremost is an actionRPG which means big dps no matter how you spec. If that doesnt suit you well this might not be the right game for you.
There is no agro in diablo, there is no tank, there is no healer.
You go in and fight for your lives. No organization. No class specific gear (aka healer//tank).
Everyone is dps. Everyone heals themselves.
They have already confirmed this. Article or bashiok, cant remember but its already been confirmed that they will stick to DPS class's only. And that is a great thing. :).

i mean you can already sorta tank already in diablo 2? but whats the point if that scuker is gunna die in less then a minute anyways lol?
I understand what you're saying OP, but it brings with it problems three main problems.
The first one is that for this to work in an MMO-like way, it needs to be designed that way, with aggro and the like. This is not the case with Diablo, so that's a problem.
Second, if we put in these potential roles, then there needs to be a reason for us to use them. If tanking is ineffective, no one will do it, all will DPS, and the system is useless. If tanking however pays off, people will slip into these specific roles as tanks, healers and DPS. This will make the game unbalanced for those who go for pure DPS groups. Thus, the game will drif towards the MMO-spectrum.
Third, this will make even more gear drop that isn't useful. Although with a trading system in Diablo that has no BoP/BoE, that might not be such a big problem.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

In an action game, everyone is DPS.
Words I hate in Gaming Culture:
Epic
Hardcore
E-Sports
....

RIP: Demon Hunter: lvl 50 | Barb: lvl 60 (plvl 5) | Monk: lvl12 & lvl70 (plvl 200)
Damage per second. Pretty much a class that focusing on damaging more than tanking or healing.
In Diablo all classes are DPS/Tanking and Healing basically.
PPL did like 10k just posion,,,IT WAS RETARTED!

Exactly why I love the game.
I will always play DPS. I don't want to be forced to get healers and tanks to have a viable group or to do higher end places such as bosses.
