Are we only comparing this to the Diablo series or other series?
Barbarian in D2 didn't have any magic abilities, but magically enhanced bloodline. It's in the manual right next to me but I don't feel like typing it all out, it's pretty big.
yea but were not talking about a caster class either. watch the vid a couple more times. and ask yourself... is it just a tad overboard? on a scale of 1-10, 10 being absurdly overboard I rate the barb a 5.

Compared to a spell caster out of 1-10 i would rate him a 5 for his ability affects. The fact you can compare him at all to a spell caster is kind of absurd though... but it makes sense.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.

I see no reason as to why he can't have magic LOOKING attacks. It's still physical damage. It's not like he's casting fireballs while using whirlwind.

The barbarian tribes have shamans also, so they have to at least be familiar with magic.
by adding cool lights and fairy dust to old skills?
the more i watch the game play vid the more out of place he seems now. he's a melee class - or supposed to be. you pretty much expect not see all the flash and dazzle of a spell caster class.
weird i was not aware that all he did was cast spells with his "fairy dust" seems to me that every attack that's been announced for him except seismic slam seems to be completely melee based.
Normal, it is just your opinion. Like the others have their's. And none of us can really know yet if it will be too chaotic with more players casting spells and doing leaps etc. I think Blizzard will do a good job to prevent it from being too chaotic.
For me, the 'flash and dazzle' got nothing to do with melee. He swings his axe with effects, for me that is still melee. And a melee class should be using mostly close ranged attack, from man to man. That is what melee is about, not about having 'flash and dazzle' or not. And I guess they will keep the barbarian mostly a close combat class.
Most of the Barbs skills in that video seem heavily based in magic due to the extra "flash and dazzle" though. thats the problem.

look closely, when he lands not only is blue/yellowish nova emanate from the point of impact, it briefly fades into a "dusty" looking blue residue.

I personally really enjoy that part of the skill, makes it seem not so pointless to have anymore. Im not arguing there is definitely color in his attacks, it just isn't enough to actually bother me.

How is that a "problem".... The female WD seems absurdly under dressed for combat. I think we should start a petition to make her wear more gear to cover up that midriff... real combatants wouldn't expose so much flesh.
You might not like it, however that doesn't make it a problem, no one thing in the entire universe is liked by everyone/thing.

Thats showing the emphasis of the power of his landing/leap... would you rather he just landed and all the monsters randomly took a little bit more damage?
Maybe it could be done differently, and I'm sure everyone is an expert in designing world class entertaining games.... But there are reasons for such things...

Blizzard wants to make the game as fun as possible, and why do they want that? To sell as many copies as possible. Sadly that's how commercial companies work. And I think many people will like the game like this, and thus buy it.
Let me start by saying I'm agreeing with your post entirely, however this last line confuses me a little...
There is nothing sad about wanting to make a game as fun as possible... who cares the reason, if they make it fun, everyone benefits. Of course they are driven by money, but they also have a reputation to maintain... hence scrapping star craft ghost, even though by as far as they got it they must have spent a lot of $$ on it.

Its one thing to make a game look fun, its another to go off course and target kids in a M rated franchise. Does that make sense to you, honestly and seriously? Here is a bit of news for your tastebuds, http://www.blizzard.com/us/jobopp/ Art director just opened, only a cuple days ago it looks like. Booya anyone? tap dat ass plz, long live the M, in M rated.

I don't really have a problem with some special effects to show whats happening, but would much prefer if they were more tastefully done, white/desaturated color would look a LOT less "magical" and more explosive, but alas apparently everything has to be brightly colored to keep the ADD kids attention.. So much of D3 lacks any subtlety, taste or finesse.
The main thing I don't like about the "Hammer of the Ancients" is that if I were a sowrd or axe-wielding barbarian, it would feel out of place. If it became a "Sword of the Ancients" while holding a sword, I wouldn't mind so much.
Of course, I am not a fan of the flashyness overall, as it is too over-the-top. Some flash is nice, but these skills are too much.
WTF no one cared about the flashy attacks before... now all of a sudden after Blizz said "we don't care we aren't changing art" this is the next "bandwagon" everyones jumped on...
Next it will be "that rabbit critter at 16:42 in the video had too much fur, it almost looks like a hare... we want realism blizzard, rabbits are not hares"

The same people who complained about the art direction are pretty much going to be the ones not so happy about this stuff too, after all its part of the art direction. I cant say I am terribly impressed with lightning arcs that look like they would fry the user to a barbecued meat popsicle. They are overdone in a way that resembles oh so many flashy Asian games and a certain other franchise of theirs, but hey its the current "fad" it seems, style begone!

Umm. Yes they did. Obviously you haven't been paying much attention. There were heated arguments about flashiness the same time with the art direction arguments:confused:
I don't mind the "flashyness" of the Barbarian at all, but I have to say that the Hammer of the Ancients spell looks ridiculous.
Dont know about Elder Scrolls, but thats not the only one:
I'm not really sure if Oblivion "failed", I liked it much better than Morrowind.

Since when did DA become a sequel? It's a console spin-off.

Some (many?) say AoE 3 sucks.
It's different, but it certainly doesn't suck. Play it properly first.

and WoW is a total failure for the old fans.
WoW is not a sequel to anything, it just prolongs the storyline, so I am not sure what "fans" are you talking about. People expecting a MMO to be the same as an RTS are just silly.
