@ Krauser: Yea a Blizzardfanboy, too bad this forum is called "DiabloFans".
Really, I didn't know the game WASN'T being made by BLIZZARD, hypocrite - cry baby.
I've played/play many games COD, CS, DOD, HL, WarCraft, Crysis, UT, WiC, WoW, DAoC, EverQuest, Diablo and the list goes on. If I'm a fanboy, it would probably be from Valve but either way I really don't care how a company likes to apporach their games, especially from a color perspective - it doesn't matter how good it looks, it could be obsolutly breath taking but if it plays like shit then it's garbage.
So what if Blizzard told you guys off? They're making the game THEY want to make and I have NO PROBLEM with that - NOT because I'm a fanboy but because I don't give a shit, I KNOW IT WILL PLAY GOOD. If the game was dark, bright or pink, I don't care. I would still buy it in a heart beat because I know it would deliver and trust me, I rarely buy games.
And to be fully honest, I'm glad Blizzard put you guys in your place, if Blizzard listened to all you zealots they'd probably be out of funding.
blah blah blah, yada yada yada, the counter petition is shit compared to the change petition. You fags just got owned. get over it. Cry about it. Go to mommy. rofl. owned.
Yea, but the counter petition wasn't as advertised and the grand majority probably at least 85% really don't care enough about it to sign either one. They aren't nit picky like you, and they realize that Blizzard knows what it's doing and petitions like that are stupid.
You may not hate WoW, hate is a rather strong word, but many people don't give much though past "I don't want to see WoW-esque shapes in my D3," and sign the petition after they've been brainwashed to an extent. WoW does what it's great at, a MMO, and it succeeds very well in that aspect. But I agree with you on the blurring between properties. But Blizzard is trying to warrant their own style after the success of their MMO which garners quite a few million subscribers.
Would D3 look like this if WoW didn't happen? I doubt it.
@ Krauser: Does it really matter to you that much who makes it? I just want the best Diablo game that can be, i don't care if its Blizzard or someone else.
To a degree it does matter who makes it, I want it to be the best Diablo as much as you do - it's just that colors, graphics and so on don't interest me as long as they're quality. Would you rather have EA make this game? lol... We would be up to Diablo 10 by now with 50 god damn expansions of recycled garbage. Thank god a quality company such as Blizzard is taking their time with it, who knows with other developers pressured by a release date, not Blizzard. Hell look at WAR, scrapped 4 capital cities and 4 classes to make a deadline, PATHETIC.
Ok so I'm going to approach this from my Point of View and try to explain why everyone is overacting and needs to wait to see more content before crying "BURN THE WITCH" just because someone's nephews, brothers, friends, mothers, aunty saw her casting witchcraft.
In this image, every freaking area looks the same, everything has just been made straight up darker, and imo it's one of the worser examples of "how the game should look"
I mean, yeah it looks darker, and that random ambient glow is missing, but if you think about it, these are four unique completely different places... and now they all look exactly the same...
Remember from the interview that started this thread
"When Wilson joined the project two and-a-half years ago, the game was similar-looking to what fans of the old games might expect — darker, desaturated and a lot of brown and gray tones. The first and second iterations of the art direction had a “modern, gritty look” but made it difficult to distinguish enemies from the environment, it really became boring very quickly."
And when looking at the above image I agree completely, it looks all the same, boring old greyish black/brown colours. When you play a game for as long as Diablo 2 was played... hundreds and hundreds of hours, you don't want to see the exact same thing over and over again.... It's why (imo) Oblivion failed. I mean the place had little or no diversity, and the art direction was generally pretty bad... but it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns (although... I guess if you tweaked enough with the settings it could be).
However I really liked the Diablo 1 look and feel, and I do want some dark/creepy places. I DO kind of like the top example in this next image.
However, I do NOT want the entire game to look like this, as people AND blizzard employees have already said. The world of sanctuary is a rather peaceful place, not full of corruption like the other games. It is only BEGINNING to become corrupted, dark and evil.
I remember seeing in a comment by a Blizzard official that, while the starting area is colourful and all glowy and happy, later in the game (as the corruption spreads) and particularly in dungeons it does get darker and grittier. Hopefully there will be some dungeons that look like the above image.
Remember, this is a game that is in it's utter pre Alpha stages, the video we saw was of a lowly character probably similar to the starting area's of the game (and apparently won't even be in the game as it the dungeon was specifically made to show it off). The barb starts with 2 grey axes and no armour for Christs sake.
I don't know, I mean the logic is there for me to see, I'm probably not going to convince anyone because most people are so stuck in their stubborn ways, but just because THIS dungeon, and that outside zone looked all glowing, colours, and happy... doesn't mean the whole game will be.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
Nope, thats not what i said, i said that there is a high propability and potential that the more people signing a petition the more people agreeing with said petition. (numbers that are far higher then said petition). Again, its not exact science, but you can't deny that it far exceeded expectations, infact, if it didn't then we wouldn't still be talking about it, would we? I really don't think that 1/10 th being vocal (the minority as synthaza pointed out) is that far fetched, so even if its only 10.000 signatures, then it is very likely that a hundred thousend will feel the exact same way.
Yeah sorry, i know thats not what you said, that's just the vibe I got, and often as opposed to responding to a specific person/point (like in this case yours) I am taking into mind ALL the similar posts about it.
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
I'm sure that more then half the people disliking the art design will still buy the game, so it doesn't worry Blizzard, but there's more then short term succes.
I agree here, as a lot of the posters are just being drama queens... sort of like having a tantrum as a last drawn out effort to get what you want... like every day you see on WoW forums "omg i'm quitting wow cause rogues/warlocks are so OP" and they never do.
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
just look at Oblivion and the amount of people that would never ever have bought it if they knew howmuch it actually sucked, how many people bought the expansion you think?
Funny I just made a similar comparison in my previous post >.<

Way to make a point, you should just hand em that and see if they say F.U.
This is pretty much how life is, and if you haven't figured it out, don't come back on the forums till you get out of high school... or even in it.
Your logic is horrible, you are saying, the petition is MORE legit... because if anyone signs it, that means there are thousands of others that agree who didn't sign it.... That's like saying, "Superman is 100% real because you can't prove he isn't".... It's utter bull crap.
Obviously some people didn't like the art direction/graphics, obviously they were pissed, but there is no way in hell, you can prove anything with a petition. Especially by claiming that 10,000 real people votes MEANS there is 100,000 others or something stupid.
Petitions. Don't. Mean. Jack.
So wait... I need to agree with the people who bitch the most? I never said it wasn't fair. I just said its damn stupid. And resulting to name calling... tsk tsk. Who do you really think is the one in high school?
i hate blizzard graphics in general. they all pretty much suck... but i still play the damn games. ill take game play over minor flaws any day of the week
telling me that there is a strong indication we will get to see all of those typical Diablo scenes and art is pretty much based on nothing but a dev telling you.
Well everyone is basing the rest of the entire game based on one specifically built dungeon that the dev showed you.
Thats like say, if a dev showed you act 2 in diablo 2 and said "this is an example of diablo 2" and everyone burst into riot because they don't want an all desert game, they want dark dungeons, swampy fields, cathedrals, they want to scale into hell.... etc.
I mean... I agree, there is that glowy feel, which feels like regardless of the look of the zone/dungeon... will still be there, but you can turn this off in WoW so I can't see how there won't be options to turn it off in D3, or maybe when they make darker dungeons, or eventually the "hell" act... if it does impact on the feel, and the way it looks, they will change something about it. Just like Blizzard don't want to make the game worse, because things that would make it better are too "wowish"... I imagine they don't want to make the vibe/look/feel worse in the darker area's just because "they have a stance" on the whole colour vs dark thing. They didn't get to be the most powerful and successful gaming company for nothing.
My main point is, that it is FAR too early to be complaining.... Multiple, MULTIPLE things can/will change, there will be video options, vastly different acts/dungeons... Again i make the comparison to the Victorian Witch hunts... More needs to be seen.

@ Krauser: If EA would do a better job at it (wich is very unlikely) then sure, i'm no Blizzard loyalist. I fully acknowledge Blizzard to be a very high standard quality company, but if say, they would make D3 in a very high quality shooter, then i'm not going to buy it cause i'm not interested in shooters. (hypothetically)
EA would do a average to good job their first time, but they would milk the game to death with sub-par sequels and expansions. A D3 shooter? Come on now, like that's ever going to happen in the next 10-20 years. Neither would I though, why would Blizzard take a risk like that and venture into unknown territory by introducing an FPS on their Diablo/WarCraft IP. They'd have massive competition, plus their sub-par graphics business strategy would need to be totally re-vamped because FPS gamers want new and updated graphics. Either way, I'd buy a CODX, DODX or CSX or BFX or UT over a Diablo FPS anyday lol. It's the same as... Buying DiabloX or WoWX over John's New And Great RPG/MMO.
I just want to note that the development team's comments about disliking their previous art directions are indicative of how this team's taste differs from the team responsible for previous iterations of the series. Art is a subjective matter of taste, and this team has their own style (see: WarCraft III , World of WarCraft) that differs from the Diablo and Diablo II team's style.
Everyone on both sides of this chasm has to keep this in mind. They are reimagining someone else's creation. Blizzard isn't Blizzard North, and the Diablo franchise was Blizzard North's baby.

Wow, you're both so cool.

‘I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE ALL HAVE AIDS!’—The importance of calling them ‘mercenaries.’
This is not simply about the Graphics or colors folks. There is a NUMBER of things for why people signed that petition. They cannot simply dismiss it only based upon thinking its about the COLORS like this jagass apparantly thought it was, Did he even read it? I highly doubt it. That was HIS opinion. Only ONE persons. There are many opinions in the blizzard company concerning the ART direction of Diablo 3. Clearly there is, otherwise he would not have said they had disputes about it earlier in development. Basically, there could be a dispute in blizzard RIGHT NOW about the petition. I dont see how he could just dismiss all the complaints. Most people dont realize that the petition aint just about colors, its about a lot of things.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.
@ Krauser: They made WoW wich came from a series that was RTS, it was hypothetical, but not extremely far fetched.
You're missing the point... You'd have pull strings out of your ass and rape the lore to turn Diablo into a FPS. Going from TFT to WoW was like cutting warm butter.
Well actually you missed the point, i said "hypothetically".
Yeah I know you did, it was a terrible hypothesis that will most likely NEVER happen and all you're doing is arguing useless semantics that will NEVER happen. If you don't like Blizzard and if you're not happy with the way the production of Diablo III is going, just don't buy it. Blizzard already said they don't care what you think, it's their game they'll make it as they see fit. Tough luck, not every game will be perfect for everyone.
