I guess that could work but if they changed yellow to purple because yellow and gold looked similar then...
Wouldn't silver look too much like white and gray?
Not if it had a Metalic shine, which usually defines silver. I dont meen a flash shine either. Just a regulare metalic silver look. That would make way more sense than then using purple to get rid of yellow items. And even way more sense if purple is the new high end, like i said before though that would be blasphemy.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.

I have no clue what you mean by metallic shine. Colors on the computer don't have metallic shines.
You can add shadowing, or texture, or make it a moving shine, but it doesn't shine by itself.
Like the color gold, gold shines in real life, not in D2/D3.
I dont have the means to do it, but shrink that metallic text down and then look at it, even in low resolution im sure it would look different than white or grey

the backround isnt white in the box's though, and the wording in the pictures you supplied is a bit bigger than that aswell. Might look different if accurately portayed

Actually the size is correct. Both of the capital L's consist of 10 pixels in length.
I can't do any better. I tried to put it onto a scene from the game but the outline seems too bright so I gave up.
With text that small, just trust me, it's not going to work. Anyone else is welcome to try if they want.
You just can't fit that much texture and shading into such a small font.
The L is the same size, i think it would look a lot better if all the other letters were in CAP LOCKS aswell. I think it would be a lot easier to read aswell compared to purple. I can barely tell what that item says in purple in those pictures you posted.

I'm 100% sure they have a good reason for changing things to purple... If that's even the case... It could just be a new item class.
What color besides yellow (if purple is now rare) would you of suggested they make the items?
Red is used by broken items and quest items not for the current difficulty. (a Normal mode Wirt's Leg in Hell)
Green is set items.
Blue is magic items.
Grey is socketed/ethereal I believe.
Unique is gold.
White is regular.
Orange is crafted items.
I don't like the moving text idea, it would probably slow down the game after you had so many of the items, and it seems kind of cheesy.
What colors are really left?
I'd say pink , pale green, sky blue, purps, or black.
I still think Gold and yellow should be more different. Gold should be darker, and yellow should be brighter. Black items could be really cool. Kind of depends on the map though.
And WTF is with all you db's and your friggin "ITS LIKE WOW!!" STFU
It's really hard to make out what it says or even what it is if I didn't know already.
WORD. Why the hell would you want a fatty ass shaded deeply colored item drop...way to much. A simple GOLD or SILVER coloring expresses the worth of the item. Adding all that bubbly lettered words makes it so much more of a mess. Besides, it makes it look kind of corny.
What I meant was.. I dont like the artistic direction, nor do I like the purple, but the purple items does not seem out of place with the stylized environment, since everything is bright as hell (bad pun) and cheery to begin with./

Art isn't the problem really. It's the amount of space within text.
The text I'm writing right now for example how could you make THIS look shiny metallic?
heres a better example of what im talking about

Now take that, and shrink it down to small size.
That's textured and shaded to hell and back. Which is fine... but the Diablo font isn't NEAR that big. It's pretty small.
That's from the high resolution gameplay video on fullscreen.

Thats more optimistic. Purple doesnt seem very Diabloish. Haha, Grey, White, Blue, Green, GOLD, and purple? sees kind of random.
Orange was used by crafted items made from the cube.
