There's no stealing in one's own products. Should Mercedes invent a new wheel every time they build a new car? People tend to say: "What works, that works, why not use it". Aside of if purple is a nice colour or not, saying it makes it a MMO is non-sense. This is just bandwagon jumping and blind assumption going on.
Well, if no one has anything real to say about purple except dragging the same MMO-argument back and forth for another ten pages, then I don't think there's very much left to discuss here.
Personally, I think purple is a nice color, and if Blizzard wants to use it, I don't see the problem. It's a color. On an item tag.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Well ok I have something to say about purple. I think it's an awesome color and also very fitting.
I also have to say that if you think purple is gay, please never pick up amethysts, purple rainbow facets, rejuvenation potions or purple-tinted pieces of rare gear, including item sets which are purple by default such as Tal Rasha's. Zomg teh gay purple sorc!
Purple is good, just like any other color. As long as we don't get flashy colors like yellow, pink, light blue etc.
You just gave me an idea! Legendary items should be rainbow letter marquee!
Seriously I don't really care what colors they go with, especailly if they help the gameplay. Though if the colors matter that much to people I'm sure they could make Unique items purple and legendary (or whatever they get called) items gold.
Uniques will be gold-brown-ish to distinguish them from rares. I think they could just make rares more orange but maybe orange is taken. Purple is a new item type they have not announced. If sets make it back they will be green (not purple).

Apparently freezing yourself is fatal. HOW ARE YOU PEOPLE COPING?!
I never had any problems telling them any colors apart. But not everyone has good vision. I have a couple friends that are color-blind, and maybe some people are just far-sighted, that could cause some problems.
Anyway, I couldnt care less what colors they use, they can make the names be in pink, or rainbow, or vomit colored green for all i care.
PURPLE is COOL. The only color I'd prefer not to see is RED. I think if see a red item drop I'd automatically think that there is sth wrong - maybe that it's broken I dunno and I think I may get this strange image in my head of a woman screaming:
I'd prefer red to purple. Never had any issues with red.
Red right now is for broken or wrong-Act items. I'd rather make those items purple or grey (not like you ever see them) and leave the cool colors for normal items.
Red is bad option though, as it's a color of warning. Both in nature and in real life situations.
I wont pick up items with a red color, automatically thinking they suck or are broken.
Mephistos soulstone. If you take his stone into a nightmare or hell game, but you got it from normal difficulty, the name will be in red. This is different difficulties, this is probably what he meant. I dont recall seeing a red item because it was just in a different act.
Same with me, if I see an item with its name in red, I will most likely assume its broken. But purple, since I play wow a little bit, will look to me like a good item.

They're changing it to greenish yellow now, don't worry.

No, you wouldn't. There are no red items in everyday DII. If you ever saw a red item the reaction would be "wtf is that". Why would you think it's broken? Since when does red=bad? WTF?
It's a color that stands out. Red stands for fire, rage, etc. I could easily see really powerful items being red. A lot better than purple.
Maybe you people drive too much, but I don't see red as a bad color anywhere except at warning signs, otherwise it's a cool color, red cars, football teams, etc. Don't discard a good color just due to some silly associations.

Wrong act items? What is that? Example?
difficulty*
Don't ask me, anyway, I never saw a red item in DII in my life.
I think that the better thing would be use purple instead of yellow. Rare items are more similar to magic items then uniques IMO. So, the color should be similar (but not indistiguishable) and that would be good idea IMO. The rest is perfect IMO, golds remain, everyone's happy.
That's what I wanted. Purple for rares and then same old gold for uniques. When I think gold it just screams unique to me now.
Spot on again
i guess they r trying to make the "Payloy's Reflex" even easier so if people arn't exactly sharp when it comes tho spotting colours, also Blizzard talked about trying to make it easier for colour blind people to destinguish colours but as you said they could still be making an excuse

Anyway whats wrong with the current brown/orangish color? Sounds kind of like what passed for gold on a unique in d2 anyway.

i was just thinking could purple signify unique weapon and gold signify unique armour/necklace/ring?????
