Well as many of you have already seen in the Diablo III art work section, there is a gem mine
Does this mean that this time around we will have to actually mine some of the better gems, or do other things, like fish, cut down trees for wood, etc.
I personally hope to god that that's not the case.
but what do you guys think?
what is the point of this gem mine?
It's probably one of those dungeons with lots of monsters and where you got extra chance of getting gems, maybe these will have some real purpose this time around.
i think its like a side quest or just some random gem cave where you can go in and get a good gem and come out. But if blizzard makes it like a gem craftshop like in wow , someone is getting murdered.
when i saw that on the art page i assumed it was just a location, it would be utterly nonsensical to have something like gem mining in a game that prides it's "hack, slash, repeat" nature.
Sorta like how someone said on here a while back dungeons should have their own unique properties.. like a certain dungeon will make cold spells useless but another could increase poison damage.. some could give "find" bonuses?
Just a thought.
6% better chance of finding "insert quality here" gem??
Of course.. I don't that will be the case here.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
I hope it is a mine where u can mine gems and copper/iron ore loved that feature when I played runescape! Seriosly killing things can get boring after a while so nice to see some change!
Rune scape isn't a world that's threatened by Hell taking it over.
the hero you decide to play with is supposedly "an epic hero on an epic quest" (quote from the WWI) and I cant think of a lamer thing that an epic hero, who's fate of the world rests on his shoulders, could waste his time with.
seriously, hell is taking over and everyone is like where the f**k is our champion?
and someone says o he's just gone to the gem mine to mine a few stones.
It's Gem Mine 01, which means we'll be seing plenty other models.
And judging by its squared shape, we can assume it's a "tile" which will be randomly placed in levels.
Perhaps the 01 means it was drawn in 2001, but they forgot or you can't see the ' before the 01... wishful thinking...
Perhaps gem mines will be dungeons with chests that have gems. Or from looking at the pic you will click on gems at the walls to see if you get valuable gems, or unusable gems/stones that can only be sold to vendors.
If demons invaded the mines, no one is going to be mining any more gems so it will essentially be an abandoned / ruined mine. And your characters are not miners, they already have their own professions. A Barbarian is a professional fighter/mercenary/soldier, a spellcaster is too busy reading books to bother to learn to mine. etcetera, etcetera... And there's no way they're going to learn a completely new profession now...
Edit:
It's like a doctor with 20 years of experience suddenly becoming a civil engineer when there's suddenly a huge demand for doctors (or in Diablo's case, a demand for adventurers that can slay evil).

Maybe it's related to the bnet chat gem, and now the gem in the official d3 site ;). You know that blizzard always leave a backdoor open, like the cow joke in d1, and then the cow level in d2 (that if i remember was fans idea)
Perhaps clicking on the gems will make them change colours
it just looks like the entrance of a dungeon. People mentioned it before and i agree, i think its going to be one of the random placed dungeons, maybe with a mini quest or two in it.

It means it was drawn in 2001.
I don't know why all you people are even considering this will mean jobs in D3; it doesn't. It's been pointed out already, but its most likely just a random cave like the Pit in D2. Will it have a better chance of getting gems? I highly doubt it.
Considering this was drawn in 2001 I really doubt it will even make it into the game.

i hope. maybe with a 1337some scripted boss and every encounter drops 1 part of a gem armor (purrrrrrdy...) at least for prestige and bragging rights for slaying the gem golem or the demonic machine fueled by the gems five or six times for the full set.

I must admit I really laughed when I read that.
Please Jester, do not compare Onions with Carrots, or even worse a hack'n slash with Runescape.
RS can be a great game, if you like it's style that is, but its concepts are miles away from Diablo.

I think this Gem mine, as said multiple times, is just a random dungeon, or some quest location with a rare artifact (I guess).

Oh and don't forget to listen to some Led Zeppelin!
I think a gem mine would be the perfect way for Blizzard to show off graphics. The gem mine is probably a dungeon, and we can see the color of the gems reflected on to our hero.
If u look you can see some red specks which would most likely be rubies. So lets say theres drawing 02 of the mine except its a topaz mine.
Maybe theres a different kind of mine for each gem. Like go inside, kill monsters then they have a higher % to drop the designated gem. Or you could have some kind of gem storage at the 2nd level of mine, which would have a monster encampment of such since the mine is full of riches.
Its a wild guess but it could be
