I'm confident that it is the summoner... When you kill him in D2 all that is left are robes? As the acrane sanctuary is a mind maze perhaps the figure we kill is just an illusion or summon? Guess we'll just have to wait and see in D3!

Maybe he was using the heroes to get rid of the demons that he couldn't control after the demons were vanished he could come back to his sanctuary...

It is a mind maze yes, but it belongs to Horazon. Who was not there. Instead some guy who dressed like him was.
If the Summoner (who just happens to be the sorcerer from d1) looks like Horazon and Horazon has not been confirmed to be dead (at least once) like his brother Bartuc (aka Bartuc the Bloody, aka the Warlord of Blood), then somewhere in Sanctuary is a guy that looks like that image in the D3 concept art.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Actually I don't think thats the same hat. Wasn't the summoner in D2's hat just pointed upward?
Also, the summoner in Diablo 2 was black (hinting that he was the same sorcerer from the original Diablo) while this one is yellow and what not. So it can't be the same summoner.

It may still be fun, but it will be World of Diablo.

The outfit is similarly styled, he is using cold magic, looks like hes holding an undrawn staff. Not enough information to make an educated guess, but I want to say "YES! THAT'S THE SUMMONER! BOOYA!". I wonder if blood raven will return? She disappeared after death too.
Maybe The Summoner and Bloodraven are enslaved by the prime evils now. Kind of like how Bartuc was in D1 as The Warlord of Blood and in D2 as Bartuc, one of Baal's minions?
Bartuc technically wasn't in d1. His armor along with a manifestation of him was.

Hmm well then. I just think the prime evils have control over his damned soul now.
Yes and no.
The thing with Bartuc to is, his existence is tied to his armor. I believe it's mentioned in Legacy of Blood that he was a champion of Diablo, and he was thus granted great powers which he used to imbue his armor even further. His bond became so intense, that he and the armor were basically one. When he was killed by Horazon, it would seem that his soul lived on within the armor. So, as long as the armor exists, Bartuc can never truly be killed. The armor simply need find a host, who eventually becomes corrupt, and takes on the mantle of the Warlord of Blood, as evidenced by Norrec in LoB when he begins refering to past events experienced by Bartuc as his own.
Bartuc is loyal to the Three, but he follows his own agenda (Which appears to be the pursuit of his brother). As for WHY he appears in Baal's throne room... I have no honest clue. I'd go as far as to guess that it was just a goof. That they needed a name for a boss, and they decided to throw that one on him. OOORRR (And this is a big or), in the time between the end of Legacy of Blood (Which happens some time before the hero enters Lut Gholein), and Lord of Destruction, Horazon managed to wrestle the soul of Bartuc from his armor, and sent him back to hell, thus rendering his armor into simple pieces of enchanted metal. Bartuc would probably then have become a servant of hell, and been mutated into the form encountered in the throne room.
-Ahem-
That aside, I'm thinking the picture may indeed be of Horazon. As Bartuc transfered his mind and essence into his armor, Horazon transfered his own within the Arcane sanctuary. As long as IT exists, so does he. IF we assume that he's vanquished his brother's soul from his armor, than Horazon would be free to return to his Sanctuary to continue doing whatever it is he does. Being knowledged as he is, the hero will probably have to find him and seek his aid.
But we can also consider it possible that instead of an ally, Horazon will be a threat. We know that the Prime Evils seek that which could give them any sort of advantage over the light (Diablo's corruption of Ureh, Mephisto's corruption of the Zakarum Council, and Baal's corruption of the Worldstone). They would definetly know of Horazons great magics, and thus would probably want to control him as well.
The reason I think it's Horazon is simply because of the similarities between himself and the Summoner who was supposedly posing as him. I'm going with Occam's Razor on this one.
Although, I do also like the one suggestion that it may also be Gregus Mazi...

Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
Of course, i've had to hunt him time and time again for those damned keys of hate.
But I never really paid much attention to the hat he was wearing. The design looks the same, but the hat just looks different to me.
Can you see the pictures in the OP? The hat obviously has the same shape, plus it grows in size towards the end, in both pictures.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
I think this may be Horazon though.
