Here is kinda what I picture when I talk about finishing something with the Barbarian http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIOPZxpjSX0&feature=related. Also I like the part in Gladiator when Russel Crow stabs the dude in the chest with both swords then takes them out and proceeds to decapitate him.
I've seen hack and slash PvP games work this in and you guys are trying to say it wouldn't work in a PvE game? I agree, I am not a Blizzard fan boy, but I do believe that Blizzard has a very talented staff working on D3 and so I think implementing it would not be hard for them.
Puh-lease!

Which hack and slash PvP game was finishers in?
If you mean Fury (I don't remember if they had finishers or not), I don't know if you can say they worked anything in, does anyone even still play that anymore?

Yeah, it is free to play, so it's got a decent player base.
And the finishing moves were my favorite part of combat, even if they cost a lot to put into a build and made you gimpy for a while after. Still, instantly killing someone when they were at 25% health or lower was worth blowing all your energy.
You turned invincible during the animation, as well, so even when the action was all around you the event could play out. They were quick, under ten seconds, but had enough action.
My favorite one was were I jabbed a sword into someone's chest, broke their knee and shield slammed them away as I ripped out my sword. When you kill someone like that it really emphasises "owned".
This is just a little change of topic but still related. Does anyone remember the Mortal Kombat that implemented your own finishing move creation system? I am not sure which one it was god knows there has been too many, but there was one where you had the ability to piece together your own moves in the end to essentially create your own fatality. Then after you created it it you could use it along with others you created in the game.

Are you talking about the online Arena game Fury ? Last time I checked it had a full price stamp on it, with poor critic reviews due to lots of bugs and lack of content. Did Fury flop that bad it's a free game now ? Lol
With their new 1, 5, 10, 15 skill system, it could just be a one point skill.
Blow all your Mana/Fury, 15% for minions, 10% for mini-bosses, 3% for big bosses.
It could also leave you unable to regenerate mana/fury for a while unless you use a orb or potion and then you only get half the normal amount back.
So, basically, super awesome and a good way to finish a boss quickly, but not something you'd want to use while surrounded by too many things unless you felt you could walk out of that.

Yep, moral of the story is don't use high end gaming engines for online games hosting hundreds of players at a time.
Well as far as using finishing moves on bosses I am not sure that would work to well...when I created the thread I was more or so just referring to using the moves on lesser demons and etc.

The reason it would be very hard to implement is because you face so many monsters at once (in the hundreds, sometimes) that having finishing moves would be an excess in coding (space), would slow down processing and increase ping because of having to execute it so many times and on a large graphical scale (lag), and having finishing moves against a bunch of monsters at once (think Whirl Wind, Fire Ball, Zeal...)
This game is designed for group herding and elimination in masses, not cutting down an enemy one by one.
Eh, you'd have to be trying to get one-hundred monsters on your screen. Forty is believable.
Even if it was forty, my point still stands. That's too many to be spamming finishing moves.
Go to Act I and then go to the Cold Plains- you'll occasionally find camps that are composed or two or even three areas, all full of at lease 40 of those fallen, plus the shamans, which is about 4 each, plus the Corrupted Rogues, and plus the occasional pack of giant monkeys. It should also be noted that not all of the monsters you're fighting are on screen- I shoot my frozen orb, blizzard, chain lightning, etc. ahead of me into a known infested area to cut most of it down before I get there.

I agree with you that it would be no easy task, but this is Blizzard were talking about...it is kinda like saying I am not sure if Barry Bonds can hit a home run. I kind of imagined it different I guess, I wasn't really talking about taking skills like whirlwind and making them finishing moves. but maybe a set of finishing moves that you use that can only really effect one to two targets at a time. I guess what I am trying to say is there could be a limit on AoE for finishing moves.
If it were then it would be a problem, but the way I laid it out, with the detrimental effects, you'd only wish to use it sparingly and take out tough bosses/monsters to dispatch them quicker than it would normally have taken.

I wouldn't want to see a 25% finishing move though. That's a lot of hp left.
I'm sure they could work it in SOMEHOW I just can't think of a good way yet.

That that makes it even more complicated.
Boss is at 25% hp BAM finisher. Might as well make him not have that 25% more hp cause it's all gone in one attack.
Of course they could add 25% MORE hp to bosses, but then it kind of forces finishers on you.
