(Abd al-Hazir is a renowned gentleman, historian, and scholar. He has recently taken up the unprecedented task of investigating, researching, and compiling information about the unique locales and denizens of our world)
at the bottom of one of the DIII entries I was reminded of someone who I had studied in world history: Ibn Battuta. The similarities between the two were astounding.
Ibn Battuta lived in the 14th century, when our world was much like the world of sanctuary (as far as way of life goes). Ibn Battuta was of Arabic descent much like Abd Al-Hazir is. Ibn Battuta traveled over 73,000 miles in his life time, exploring and documenting much of the middle east, southern europe, africa, and asia. Ibn was a scholar like Abd. His findings give us insight into a world that we may have lost in many respects, just as Abd gives us insight into the world of Sanctuary.
They probably drew some inspiration from that character, the similarities are too uh.. grand? to be mere coincidence. Even though there is no such thing as coincidence, just the illusion of coincidence.
If you look at many medieval fantasy books, cartoons, comics, games you will find some of the characters have similarities to real life people.
Most just know him as Ahmed Ibn Fadlan. As this was the character played by Antonio Banderas in 13th Warrior, which was based on the book Eaters of the Dead.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
umm who says they have to follow the rules???
Although I could see the KSA and UAE going nuts over this and refusing to release the game here.
and if, god forbid, that happens.... Some one will die.
but I was wondering about that too, I understand arabic to an extent and I knew what Abd meant, but does Hazir even mean anything??
(and anyway, I know someone called Abdul. Spelling might be incorrect though)
edit: not spelling... ...partitioning. Perhaps Abdul is acceptable but Abd Ul is not?
lol no no his name isnt really abdul, thats his nickname, or the short version, like Cassandra would be Cassy, Alexander would be Alex, etc. etc.
so abdul is short for adbul(insert one of God's 99 names here)
The name Abd Al- Hazir who is the scholar or historian in the diablo 3 website is incorrect.
The word Abd or عبد is arabic for worshipper.
The word after Abd has to be one of the names of God and Hazir is not one of them so it is incorrect.
You look too deep into things.
It's a game.. Sanctuary isn't part of our world, so therefore any rules in our world aren't the same as in Sanctuary.
You're basing a game on reality.
Cubes in real-life don't Transmute shit.. does it make that incorrect too?

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.

I hate people who try to compare video games to real life.. I'm sorry.
It's an argument that never works.. because video games aren't real.
They don't follow the same rules as reality.

I trust by Indian you mean South American Native. Alkor is the only indian in Kurast. Kurast itself is modeled on the jungle pyramid cities of Central and South America.

Yup, the Aztec and Mayan influences stand out in Kurast, you can see they took details from Tenochtitlan (Kurast Causeway) and Chichén Itzá, for example.
Oh, and about Abd Al-Hazir, I see more of a hint towards the Lovecraft character named Abdul Alhazred, a mad scholar credited with the Necronomicon and assassinated by invisible demons at daylight.

Wow, i just remembered Abdul Alhazred. That seems the most likely possibility, especially since, with the whole dark atmosphere of Diablo, it makes sense that the lore ppl may have gotten some inspiration from Lovecraft.:necro:
EDIT: pay no mind to the necro emoticon, i just like it.
this thread can't be explained in another way than LOL
Go back to your battle.net forum, why do you ruin this thread ? It's a videogame, yes, but REAL PEOPLE are making it, they have REAL IDEAS and take inspiration from REAL AND NON-REAL THINGS. Is it that hard to understand ?
Howard Phillip Lovecraft was an early 20th century author. He mostly wrote dark horror stories like "The Call of Cthulu." The Necronomicon is usually associated with the short story, "The Dunwich Horror." I seriously recommend Lovecraft. I believe anybody interested in a game as dark and evil as Diablo would appreciate Lovecraft's works.
AL -in arabic is like- the- in english.
Hazir is a word in hebrew that means - pig (iam not sure, but may have the same translation from arabic, if there is such word at all in it)
Abd the pig? ?????? lol? or.. as said before,, worshiper.... worshiper of the pig????????
In Judaism pig is an untame and forbbiden animal, alsow, i think ,in islam, because a mouslim who was wraped in pig skin after his deaths wouldnt be able to get to heaven
So this guy, abd, is quet ****ed up , only from his name.

For example in Berserk
Gattsu has a prosthetic arm like Gotz von Berlichingen

It is possible they also drew inspiration from Ahmad ibn Fadlān ibn al-Abbās ibn Rašīd ibn Hammād

Maybe this isn't real life and Arabs don't EXIST?
Words I hate in Gaming Culture:
Epic
Hardcore
E-Sports

lmao.
I wonder what they did with him.
Eat him?
Sacrifice him?
Erm.. *gulp* ...rape him?
but some areas in the games are influenced by them.
Lut Gholien is clearly influenced by the old arabic culture.
Kurast's native people are influnced by the Indian culture.
And the new Xiansai area seems like it will almost certainly be influenced by the asian culture.

Hazir may be his "god" in sanctuary, like the zakarum and etc are religions.
