while watching the Diablo III gameplay trailer, I decided to pause at the parts where the mouse ig going over some skills so I can read their details.
I was both shocked and disappointed at what I found out.
The 20/20 skill tab has been replaced with a different system, which seems more similar to WoW's system.
Now I'm sure that the WoW system was great for WoW, but would it really be better than the old skill system Diablo II had?
some poeple might argue that they would rather put in 1 point to max a skill rather than 20 points.
and here is where my question comes: Do you really belive that a 1/1 skill will be as powerful as a 20/20 skill
I don't.
and this is why.
While yes they are different skills for completly different classes, they are still somewhat similar, and can be compared since they both add a % of damage to the original weapon damage, and both are "charging" attacks.
But I think this is a good thing. This one has 2 types of damage.. it says smashing everything in the way. So i think it does damage to everything that gets on your way, then some extra damage to the target you are charging. So seems like a powerfull 1 pointer skill.
If this was 20 points skill you would take 1 point of it probably but it would be a lot weaker. So now the charge is pretty nice skill for some situations that you don't have to spend so many points to make it usefull.
Barb used to have these skills like leap attack etc where you only put 1 point for pre req ofc but its also nice to have 1 point there to get over rivers etc. Now if the leap attack would be 1/1 pointer and give some nice aoe dmg when landed, it could be used for other things than just jumping over rivers.
I didn't see that charge being used by anyone else but low level pk's. Sure people had 1 point in it. But would someone max it out and use in PvM? I don't think so. Also pala charge only hits 1 person with 570%. THat new charge can hit lets say 20 monsters on the way? So 20x the damage + the primary damage.
1 more edit. Besides I think its pretty useless to compare D2 skills to D3 skills.. you don't know monster hit points, weapon damages and that kind of things from D3 they are probably a lot different that in D2.. so we have no idea how powerfull that 100% bonus is in this skill in the D3 world. In D2 world it might be quite underpowered.
Im assuming that that screenshot was from the game play trailer. I think the most likely answer is that the skill has not been balanced yet. In other words, they haven't got around to add ranks 1-20. i think they did that because it was a visually astounding skill and they wanted people to be amazed by thier awesome new video engine;)

I hope you are right.
I have another problem now too... why does he use "fury" instead of MP
its like they`re intentionally forcing all these WoW ideas into Diablo. it wouldn`t hurt them if they just stuck to MP instead of implementing a WoW idea.
since this is blizz we are talking about and they are a strategically smart company, I`m guessing that they are sure in the next few years the WoW subscribers will slim down a great deal and to prevent them from going to different game companies, Diablo III has been made as similar to the Warcraft games as possible, so WoW subcribers can familiarize themselves with this game and get into Diablo. and the next thing you know, come 2012 and the Announcement of the World of Diablo comes.
I don`t know what world you live in, but here on earth, sequels are usually compared to their prequels.
It's been 8 years.. game mechanics are maybe slight different this time.

Why not? Mana was just stupid for d2 barb. It was just useless stat, no one invested for it, no one looked for items with mana.. all you needed was mana leech which pretty much acted how the fury acts now.. regens very quickly.
fury existed before 'wow' as a power source, and it's a bit rediculous that a muscular class with no magic training would rely on mana to jump and swing axes. Still, I love everything you said in regards to the skill tree. Either everyone's going to have the skill because it's so convenient, or in the minds of beginning players it puts everyone on even footing so the req would have to be higher to counter it, and by the time people reach the req lvl, that skill will probably be useless unless it was very energy-conservative, and no one would take it. It's a matter of making a skill everyone has because it's too easy to get, or a skill no one has because it's underpowered.
While yes they are different skills for completly different classes, they are still somewhat similar, and can be compared since they both add a % of damage to the original weapon damage, and both are "charging" attacks.
They can not be compared however, because we know nothing of monsters stats, we know nothing of synergies or similar, we know nothing of how +skills on items work, and we do not know how damage is calculated
So while the initial picture may be grim, there are many other things in the game that can have been modified so that this one change improves the game on a whole.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I felt in love with the skill tree on DII and am disapointed in the designers decision to, yet on an other level, make the game look like WoW. I was expecting the gameplay in the least to remain similar but I guess I will have to wait and see.

To make the system like wow they would need to make players be able to learn 98% of their skills, be able to buff some of them, and train 1% more of their skills. Leaving 1% unavailible to that player until they decide to respec. That more than anything dictates how a game plays, not 0/20 for every skill.
As many people have already, comparing D2 skills with D3 skills in terms of statistics is not a good idea. Maybe you can compare the skill as a concept and the "cool-ness" factor but even then it's sketchy until you find out what environment the skills will be used in.
Also, I don't think anyone has brought this up but it says rank 1/1 for charge and rank 20/20 for whirlwind. Has anyone thought this is the max level of the skill usable by the player?
I.e.
Current Skill Level Selected / Maximum Skill Level Selectable.
Charge could simply have 1 point in it which means you can only have access to the first level of the skill. If I put two points in charge I could use charge level 1 (1/2) or charge level 2 (2/2).

lol I doubt that.
I wouldn't invest a point in a skill if I'm not going to use its full power.
I don't think anyone would!

He uses "fury" because a Barbarian using Mana to do physical attacks really doesn't makes sense when it comes down to it. When you think about it: why would mana be usable for an extra-powerful strike when it usually accomplishes such tasks as summoning or magic? I prefer the whole "fury" thing.
Some skills dont need 20 points to be mastered. Realistically, look at skills like Static, Teleport, Redmption, find item/pot etc.
Is it really worth a point which could increase dmg by 50-500 for 1 mana per cast? Or 1% more chance to find an item? Or 2 more mana/hp per soul? etc.
Blizzard realized that no1 invests in certian skills, nor should they when there are better things to pump points into. So, instead of having teleport satrt at 27 mana, it will start at around 15ish and stay that way.
Bad? pfft, no.

Stop comparing things to WoW.
We don't even know how skills and experience are going to work.
We know only slightly more about the game now than we did when it wasn't even announced.
Jumping to conclusions only makes for flames and butthurt.
It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.
But they make a cream for that now.
