Since Diablo 2 gives no real rewards for killing another player...only thing resembling an award were the 'trophy' ears, which were implemented stupidly (you can give them away to anybody--so much for being able to prove you killed so-and-so by having their ear)...I never really saw the point in Diablo 2's implementation of PvP in general. I guess it's fine for the super-competitive people who really want/need that 'bragging rights' feeling to have fun, but I guess I'm too mellow for that. I don't want to kick my own ass trying to have perfect gear so that I can even have a chance against one of the couple archetypes that beat the shit out of everything else in PvP (since it's obvious the classes were never designed for PvP in the first place...I heard the stories, but wasn't playing then, or else I would have loved to see the guided arrow/pierce combo in action).
Just doesn't appeal to me. Cooperating with other players, bringing our forces together to kick some ass, now that's fun--at least monsters drop items for you. Only way to do that with another player is to trick them into trying to retrieve their corpse when they're carrying other stuff.
To OP: No, Diablo 2 is innately a cooperative game. If you recall the first ladder season when patch 1.10 was released, many of the level 90+ kept running throne of destruction with level restrictions and cooperated with other high level players in the ladder race. Evidence of that is the monsters in hell level have different types of damage immunities, restricting the dominance of a single class and encouraging different class cooperation. It's not to say that this game wasn't soloable (hammerdins pretty much could handle anything) but it's original intention was to encourage more cooperation.
Remember before LoD in D2 when the monsters in Act 4 was so hard and you HAD to have a group to kill them? Felt like co-op back then, and it was fun. That was short-lived era though before they changed it but still fun.
I think that's what makes Diablo so good, you can do solo/co-op/pk/pvp anytime and still make that fashionable ear necklace.

hmm...i want pking re-instated, but...a few changes could be made.
ears shouldn't be tradable, plain and simple.
ears should only be for the first kill. It makes no sense that I have 12 of my girlfriend's ear, when she only had two to begin with. In three I wanna start choppin' toes when my foes are out of ears.
Anyway, I think PK can be a neuisance sometimes... and therefore should be restricted, though not gotten rid of. Im thinking something along the lines of, someone can only die once a day to a certain person. If it annoys you this much that people are pking you turn it around on them and whoop some ass...or call your girlfriend and...two...three of your friends so that you have a sizeable party to at least hold back the opposition, but don't cry to blizzard to use their godly power to protect you from all pvp. Grow some trouser-ornaments or stay away from pkers.
