Health globes are alright IMO. It would make hardcore more exciting too for me. Like the situation blizzard has planted, where there is a health globe behind a pack of monsters, and your hardcore character is dying. You are surrounded, and have ran out of pots. Mobs are closing in, would you try to destroy a pack of monsters and attempt to open a town scroll portal to escape, or would you try to knock a few of the monster out so it creates an opening for you to pick up the health globe.
I like this kind of immediate reflex strategy (only works for multiplayer because you can't pause). Forces you to be more prepared before fighting mobs, as well as create a planned strategy to effectively take out large number of mobs. Instead of charging straight into 10 demons, you can lure them to a trap area, where you can use the environment to your advantage.
It would be better if they made it wih soul harvesting or something. It would need to have soomekind of background however.
Like in Lionheart. It sure won't be as lame as stupid oversized healing vials appearing out in the middle of nowhere.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
how can you explain that YOU take physically the blob and the OTHER gets life ?
Maybe you can imagine, "Hey MAN I throw you this blob, take it !!!!" *flying blob* "-I took it thanks man !" (as he was surrounded by monsters..)
i mean , really lol.
Many games having one player healing another player, without the player being healed having to accept it, or drink something they throw to them or whatever. In D3 they are just making it a "smart" heal so that the person doing the healing doesn't have to decide who to heal, how much to heal. I'm undecided on orbs as they work with the balance of the game, but noone can say someone else sending a healing spell at their party is less realistic than someone downing a potion without getting murdered.
I mean shit maybe the person getting the orb, smashes it and the perfume floats around the room and is inhaled which causes the healing effect. In the end though if your imagination wants to make it seem lame, it will seem lame.
uhh pot are not allowed on a bar so id imagine small timer 1/2 a second - 2 seconds and bosses drop orbs randomly and in a boss fight there are monsters that appear so they also drop health orbs so theyve made it a litttle bit easier when ou think there are no pots ohh and it seems no mana orbs because i didnt see o ne and Wd mana goes up continually and barb fury generates per hit like wow but doesnt diminish like wow after you dont hit for a while
as for Hc id imagine a better percent of orbs and pots will drop and/or monsters are less powerful

It may not make much sense why it'd take the form of a red globe, then again I guess it doesn't need to make much sense in a fantastical world.
But I believe that is what they call in the industry,
"Magic".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd assume there is lots of that in the world of Diablo.
Lawls and chuckles. Just sayin'.
But its not "magic" smart ass.
You can't explain everything with "well its magic".
p1: "Hey this game is riddled with bugs".
p2: "Its a fantasy game, its magic".
Why not make dwarves in LoTR float?
Its fantasy, its magic.
Nah. Bugs are things that don't work right in the game. Things that should be fixed because the developers didn't want them to be in there, obviously. Makes the game unfair.
The globes aren't bugs.
Not EVERYTHING needs a rational explanation in a world being destroyed by the forces of Demons. Hence Fantasy and magic.
Sure, they could have gone with health turds and dildos, but I guess Globes just better suited the people who pay for and made the game.
HurrDurpDurp
-oh, and not everyone finds the globes to be as silly as a floating Dwarf would be. But then again, coming from a person with such extreme opinions, I can't be surprised.-
What are you on about? "globes better suited the people who pay and made the game".
You almost make it sound i have to be glad they are health orbs and not big macs which heal you. Big macs would have suited "the people who pay for it" (McDonnalds) and the people that made the game (Jay) just as well.
Suites you hé? Suites you sir.
And again, where do you get the idea they're magical? They make no sense, thats for sure, doesn't make them magically magical though.
ooookay...
People who pay for and make games:
Game company I.E. Blizzard.
Ugh I can't believe I'm arguing about this...
Ok, explain a fire bolt. Oh right, that doesn't make any sense either, but it sure as hell happens when you apply magic.
HOW DARE THEY PUT MAGIC ITEMS IN A GAME ABOUT DEMONS AND ANGELS AND CHARACTERS WITH SUPER NATURAL ABILITIES!
Geez, simple reason, they WANTED it in the game. The fact that you can use any of the abilities in the game pretty much rules out reasoning and logic. It's called magic for a reason.
But it's up to nit picky people like you to make a HUGE deal about every little thing that doesn't seem "normal" (based on your point of view, which as prementioned is quite narrow).
LOTR is based on JRR Tolkiens books, so of course it wouldn't make sense for dwarves to float since it was nowhere in his books. Now why can health globes make sense in D3? Because as far as I know it isn't based on a book, they can make the lore to fit the game, not make the game to fit the lore. All it takes is one little piece of dialogue between your character and deckard cain to make it 'fit'.
Deckard Cain: "There's strange work afoot my friend, these newest concoctions of hell have a thick blood coursing through their veins. Last year I devised a way to collect this blood into balls and use it to heal one's wounds. Let me show you how..."
WRONG!
Did JRR Tolkien EVER said dwarves DON'T float?
According to your logic, namely "dwarves don't float cause it was nowhere in his books" means that "a certain percentage of monsters don't drop health orbs because it was nowhere in Blizzes Diablo games".
"Because as far as I know it isn't based on a book" = one of the most retarded excuses i have ever heard.
@ Bolded part: Please.
Not sure what I said to warrant such a backlash of anger. However, I still believe if a game is based on a book, movie, etc. it should stick pretty close to it. In LOTR you are talking about a non-magical race suddenly gaining the ability to float. In Diablo we are talking about the ability of hell to spawn new and different things, humans gaining new magical techniques...which is not absurd since it occured between 1 and 2. There is a flexibility that comes with "20 years later...", you have to realize that. Blizzards philosophy in a lot of their games seems to be, "What makes the game fun to play?" then later on..."How do we explain this within the confines of the universe we have created?" Which is how it should be if you want a fun game to play. I myself am not sure the way orbs work is the most fun way, but the point stands that they have given themselves the flexibility to introduce such a thing if they think it is the most fun solution to healing.
ANGRRRRR!!!
Hmm, i just write like that, i'm not angry. (plus its fun the reply with "WRONG!", especially when you know you're right)
Anyhoways.
That "book, movie whatever" argument (as opposed to games, or any other medium) is BS, you know it, i know it, anyone not retarded and not having lived in a cave for, oh, 20 years or so knows it.
"What makes the game fun to paly" is a whole other discussion, i'm extremely skeptic health orbs in any way make the hack & slash DIABLO more fun. Hell, i haven't heard of any reason that isn't based on "its more strategic/tactical/whatever baseless bullcrap" how in any way health orbs would make anything about this game/genre more fun.
Secondly, trying to make it fit later on, (again, if its actually fun to begin with, which i highly doubt) is all fine and dandy except for the reason none tryed making it fir AT ALL. "Magic" doesn't make it fit, else dwarves floating would fit LOTR.
The only, somewhat viable, reason i heard in favor of health orbs is that they replace potion spamming, which is funny cause none succeeded in explaining to me how doing away with health orbs automatically replaces that with potion spamming. Mind you, i know it doesn't, so anyone even touching on "logic" like that fails from the get go, this includes Jay:
= Massive failure.
Ugh....
I forget why I even started arguing.
Your over the top extremely one sided opinion is fail, and since everything you say is based on that horrible opinion, it is also fail.
It's like talking to a five year old who isn't used to being told no.
Magic is the only thing that makes any of the stuff in Diablo fit, or do you really think you have a "rational" explanation for the things that happen in that game outside of the obvious? Potions don't even make sense, so why not take out that if you can't wrap your mind around it? They can contort the reality in their game if they want to, that hasn't stopped them before and they really aren't making anything too absurd here with the globes. You just have to RAAAAGE about it, and that's because you're close minded.
It's all freakin' magic, and until you can point out ONE thing that makes your opinions even remotely reasonable, I'm afraid that you'll always be incorrect on this argument. In fact, you didn't even retort to my last statement. "Magic................. Why are you even here? Magic?" Oh, you sure showed me! Let me tell ya.
It boils down to this: You don't like something, and you'll be damned if other people are able to explain why it can belong in the game, regardless of how logical they are in their proposals.
In short, and I can't stress this enough, everyone needs to address you and others like you as trolls. It'll make discussing most topics so much easier, I swear.
Potion spamming was a flaw of Diablo 2. No one can genuinely deny that they don't think so and that the potion system was perfect.
Sure the orbs are a bit uninspired and maybe a little lame, but you have to give Blizzard credit for trying.
I think the only good thing is that they said healing skills will be more prevalent, or something of that nature. Hm... Wonder where I read that? Maybe I didn't... Yay for useless posting!
Who exactly said anything about replacing health orbs with potion spamming?
You're taking everything with a much too hostile point of view. We're agreeing here, not competing.
I'm glad this thread seems to have pushed beyond any perceived aesthetic or story related problems of health orbs, and we can discuss the pros and cons of an orb system.
As I see it, a major con is not being able to control your healing. You will be reliant on a random generator, and if you aren't reliant on orbs to complete fights, then it sounds like an easy game. Accidentally picking up orbs is a problem also, as it further reduces your ability to have a controlled and thoughtful method of healing.
Seems to me maybe all they would need to do is limit the amount of potions you can hold at a time to about 4. And also no more full rejuvs.
They wanted there to be less control over your health regen. That's the whole strategy factor that they're talking about. You have to be more careful and plan things out to get through a big fight.

My point is that as far as I know orbs are dropped randomly, therefore how can you plan things out? If indeed they are random, then it takes the planning factor out of the game. Knowing what tools you have at your disposal and when you can use them certainly requires more planning, but I suppose orbs would provide more of a shifting strategy for battles...during a famine of orbs you would have to go into run, turn, hit, run, turn, hit. It would be fun sometimes, but sometimes you would be left screaming at the screen to drop a freaking orb as you stare at your corpse. So I can kinda see both sides, excitement on the times an orb drops and you strategize to get to it and yoink it just in time vs. an orb not dropping for a long time essentially dooming you to run back to town or stay to fight and pray for an orb.

Yeah and imo, in general all kinds of game mechanics shouldn't be affected much by lore.. Did the lore mention items dropping from monsters? Unique, rare, magical types.. if we start to stare at lore and remove game mechanics that aren't there.. we don't have much left in a game.
My point is that as far as I know orbs are dropped randomly, therefore how can you plan things out? If indeed they are random, then it takes the planning factor out of the game
No it adds planning, when you are at ½hp and don't see any Orbs yet.. what in D2 you would do is just drink a potion or if you are out of pots Tp and buy one. In D3 you will use some kind of crowd control abilities to make you take less damage while still getting a few more monsters down easily that can probably drop an Orb.
If this was in D2 as a barbarian I would probably have to use some war cry and kill some monsters while they are at stun and gain another orb.
They should have an in-game book that describes what health orbs are entitled, Examination of the Phenomenon Known as Gastric Apparition, something pseudo-scientifikey like that.:rolleyes:
