"Currently - while in a party each player will see their own drops from each kill.
This could mean that after killing a zombie I see a sword drop, and you may see a shoulder slot item drop. Or I see nothing drop, while you got an axe.
Obviously while in a group you're killing faster, and this could translate to an exponentially increasing number of drops with each additional player in your party. However, it's balanced in such a way that the drop % is pulled back a bit with each additional player (I'm simplifying it, but that's what it boils down to). This keeps it from being almost detrimental to not play with a full party, while still giving a nice increase to the amount of drops if you do.
From this system it seems quite a few people got the impression that you'll never see items drop that you can't use. For instance, a Barbarian will never see a dagger that only a Witch Doctor can use. This isn't true. There is no effect, or at least no currently intended effect, to restrict which items which classes can or can't see for their respective drops. It's still intended that you could see an item that your class can't use. It's easy enough to drop the item, ask if anyone can use it, or just sell it off of course."
I still want the old system back, I was nm cowing with my freind a few days ago, just for the hell of it. And whenever a rune or something green would drop we would both run like mad... women for it and I would hear him say "fucker"from the other side of the desk (he was playing on my brother's comp and our desks are back to back) or visa versa, I think that it would be a nice feature for pubs, but they should have an option to turn it off or something...
Ya... just give an option for the way you are able to loot things... not too complicated.

An option for what is being discussed would add too much overhead to the loot distribution algorithms, unless this option was decided for everyone when the game was made. If it was decided by individuals, it would be a nightmare.

I think that the old system, other than allowing ninjas, encouraged hacks or addons to "grab items". I remember a while back when I played, dealing with itemgrabbers... It was a nightmare. I like that this aspect of the game will become more relaxed so I can play until 5am, not worrying about how fast I click purple names.

"The gaming public now has focus on Diablo again, and with it comes the modern-age of trolling and jackassery."
I love the new proposed loot system. I can't think of any better way to distribute loot while still keeping the pace, excitement, and traditional loot style of Diablo. I mean, what would diablo be without the epic sounds of *swoosh* *crack* *shink* right after slewing a boss.
This is a very good way to distribute the loot fairly without everything turning into a click fest, bitch fest. I agree that the old system worked fine if you only played on-line with friends, but This makes it possible to play in random games with random people and not have to worry about never getting any loot.
It's not that I don't like the sound of this new system because I am (or more accurately - 'used') an item grabber in D2. The reason I don't like it is because this gives me the feeling that I'm gonna be sitting in a game with random people, and something is going to drop off a boss that I am going to very much wish I had at least the CHANCE to pick up myself. But instead thanks to this crap I now have to pay/trade the guy that it dropped for when I was there and took part in the killing of said boss just as much as he. If they are going to do something gay like this, they SHOULD implement a rolling system like WoW. That way at least you can say, "hey guys, I really need that particular item. Is it cool if I take it?" instead of having to pay for something you should have had the chance to pick up in the first place. Just seems like it's going to be very screwy and cause a lot more bitching than actually ending it.
Edit: If you think about it, this is actually promoting soloing over playing cooperatively unless they are also implementing diminishing return to the amount of drops against players in the game. I, as a huge fan of mfing for all my own riches, never mfed in public games in D2. This is going to make me want to do it much less. Hell I'll even level alone if it means I don't have to be pissed off at some point because some useless caster got a massive axe I should have been able to pick up.

Will only cause bitching for people who are impatient, greedy, and use item grabbers.
I don't have a problem not getting a item I want the very first time it drops.
It isn't a matter of being greedy, or impatient. If it didn't drop, oh well. Or if it did and some one else who also needed it got it.. No biggie either. What I'm saying is a witchdoctor getting a big rare sword when there was a barb there who could use it.
I guess I am just being pessimistic, but I would hate to be that poor barb when the witchdoctor turns out to be the greedy one and won't sell it to the barb (which is unnecessary in the first place). At least if I missed the click it's my own fault for being slow.. meh.

Well, as I see it, Blizzard is giving you a roll that you basically automatically accept and depending on that you do or don't get the item. Randomly selecting one person in the group is your chance. Although I see what you're saying. Its like rolling the dice rather than playing spoons.

there was nothing wrong the the old FFA drop system.... ive beaten out item grabbers(pickit) on baal bots all the time. to me it seems like diablo is an everyman for themselves type of game and i have a feeling that, with all these changes d3 is going to suck.

DIABLO = DEVIL its not supposed to be a nice game autostats are rediclous lack of pots is not welcome if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
I am in aggreance with Contagion. I played D2 solo mostly but I still used an item grabber just for ease of use. It's not just people who want to ninja others loots. And who wants to have some rare item drop in front of their face without the opportunity to get it?? no one. That's a load of BS.

You can't beat item grabbers 90% of the time unless their inventory is full.
I don't see the problem in this new system. There will always be someone who has something they want to trade, and someone who wants to trade for it. There will always be a constant influx of looted items.
In addition to fairness it also allows you to figure out which items you'll want to drop after the kill as opposed to after when you needed to drop items just for the chance at loot on the kill.
