Please make the bosses in Diablo 3 require strategy, that are actually challenging and cannot be exploited... Penalize being killed or retreating from the fight.
Diablo 2 was terrible for this. In any boss fight you could create a town portal right in the boss room and essentially create a permanent link between your re-spawn location, safety, healer and potion supplier where you could retreat too anytime and return to continue fighting the boss exactly where you left off... Same with dying, you could be killed and return and the boss would still be injured. if it wasn't hardcore you could die or retreat a dozen times and still achieve victory with little to no strategy no matter how powerful the boss was, you could keep chipping away as you died or fled to town over and over... It's no wonder the prime evils lost when up against that!
Please make it so this is NOT possible in Diablo 3, where disenaging far from the boss or being defeated will cause the bosses health to be reset.
I would be more worried about how when you kill Mephisto, you can stand on one side of the trench and fire arrows, throw spears, whatever, and not even get touched. Those are the exploits that really ruin the game.
"Well, if you do want to do that, you need to make the bosses 10x times weaker, because they are impossible to kill otherwise."
Uh, your kidding right? Since when? I've played through LOD on all 3 difficulties and the bosses are a joke, high crushing blow can own any boss in 10 seconds flat.
Well if you could kill any boss in 10secs flat i would worry about every one else running, more loot for you. GG

you actually got to shoot mephisto and didnt get hit ? if i ever tried that strat hed blow my ass away with that frozen orb, repeatedly. i was better off makeing valk to tank while i was shooting away. (which would work the same wether your on the other side of the trench or same side as him, as long as you kept valk up)
Well no need to penalize if just one person dies or retreats, maybe make it so that player is unable to return if they retreat or die for a certain duration... The heal or reset would not occur unless all party members died or retreated... But make it not easy, a kind of locked combat traditional boss battle where retreating is not easily done and dying is a set back... being able to throw up a town portal in the middle of a boss fight that creates 1 second journey to the town healer, re-spawn point and unlimited potions feels pretty much like cheating... have a more mmo style approach or old school approach to boss encounters.
Agree 100% with Soulmancer, it shouldn't be possible to teleport during a boss fight. The idea of a boss fight is that it should be challenging and scary, and in D2 it was neither.
I don't mind strategy and hard bosses but I don't like being penalized for dying. Part of harder bosses is dying a few extra times to learn how to beat them.
If you are not penalized by dying to a boss then strategy is irrelevant, reckless persistance will win in the end 100% of the time, strategy is unnessecary. if I was Diablo I would have walked through the portal and killed the healer, potion supplier and cain for good measure

This is a hacknslash game though. It's more about persistence than it is about strategy. Strategy is nice as long as it doesn't interfere with the hacknslash part. I'll be really put off if there is a huge penalty for dying.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Maybe the penalty for dying thing could be scrapped since probably a lot of people think like Daemaro, but upon dying the boss should recover all hp, that way you are still forced to come up with a good strategy and kill the boss in one go.

I would like that a lot more than a penalty for dying.

Single Player?
Yup, single player is more difficult than multiplayer. No one to trade with, no one to help kill stuff, no one to rush you, as long as you don't use hacks it's a lot more challenging.

I see where you all are coming from, i can bet anything on it that they will implement something along these lines but clearly not to the extent you guys are taking it. like if the party dies the boss gets 100% heath. lol, a touch more realistic then that (not meant to flame)
I would want blizzard to have the bosses have a health regeneration system, not having all your hard work in vain, but when you die you at least hustle your ass's back because the boss slowly moves back to 100% health.
i think that's the best route for them to take anyways

Doesn't matter how they do it to me, I just don't want to die in single player and lose equipment pieces or a massive amount of exp.
When I say equipment pieces I mean like the equipment actually falls on the ground and if you don't go reclaim it you don't get it back.
One game I used to play if you died at about level 80 you could lose 1-2 levels everything in your inventory and some of what you were wearing. That death system SUCKED.
It's true, Diablo is hack n' slash . Should there be some strategy involved? Maybe a little...But in a boss fight I don't want to be trying to calculate this and that. I want to fire up the blades and go in full force! leaving the strategy crap behind...yes it is true that persistence wins every time. So for those of you who want a "fair" boss fight, I think it would be fair if whomever boss you were fighting at the time would be able to follow you back through a portal and hunt you down.
Milking monsters and bosses for experience and item drops was a major component and proponent of Diablo II's high-speed hack n' slash gameplay style. They are there to be exploited.
