I guess this is a problem more of the way attributes worked out, as well as teleport and strange armors. When I first started DII and never knew about cookie cutter builds, I gave STR to my barb for damage, and I didn't give STR to sorceres much, and I gave my Amazon DEX, and it all seemed to make sense...

People don't want to and still don't give alot of str to the sorc, maybe a few points to wear hell armor but they generally put points in dex to max blocking and the rest into energy for the energy shield. And, the part about the armor I really don't see how you think everyone is wearing heavy armor and D2 veet knows its illogical and AP is the best armor to use.
You should try playing Hardcore mode all the way through to hell by youself. It is frustrating but, by the time you actually finish act5 hell you'll know how to play Diablo2 and what is really important. Infact if you can look at all the players who play hardcore mode 95+ they have near perfect builds, in items and skills.
I got no clue what they wear. As far as warrior classes are concerned I don't care. I just think Amazon's or Sorc's in plate armor just look weird.
I didn't mean leather armor as including quilted, leather, or studded. I meant that Quilted or its variations looks the same on all chars, and so on. I am not really as bothered with quilted-leather etc because they generally look fine on all chars. But after Breast Platel all characters seem to be wearing bits of steel, with the exception of a few.

It's the best armor, but that just means only a few people would have it, right? So what do the rest of them wear?

That's what I am doing, but considering that I am not a gamer-holic, and I don't have any gear except the one I picked up, it's going a bit slow.
I think the most heavy gear is tals armor for sorc and it is suppose to be like a magical armor or something, which makes sense. I think its fine as is tbh, Diablo iits not as controled environmet as WoW and a character can exhibit freedom in the choices they make, although they might not be the best choices. Which is why sometimes you see players walking around with enigma sacred armor, its a bad choice. Sometimes they just can't find that other 3os armor lying around. Arcane Valor was used at one point but everyone and everything wanted to wear it. Aside from the 4socket lifer AP which pros would use.

In hardcore a player shouldn't be going fast. I remember the first time I tried hardcore and got alittle impatient and decided to teleport across a bridge only to be trapped into a group of monsters with manaburn. I was 30 something and I almost had a heart attack. A player really needs to be on their A-game when playing Diablo through the game solo like that. One little mistake, one impatient move, one second reaction to late its gg. Best class for survival is the nec in hell though.
