I found it strange in Diablo II that no matter what class you play, they eventually result wearing metallic or gold plate armor of some sort. While this was all right for paladins and perhaps necromancers, I don't imagine Amazons, Assassins, or Sorcerers wearing heavy plate armor - they need to move!
Diablo III is currently using the same system as DII - it customizes all worn armor for the given character, so how about it makes it look more unique? For instance, ranger classes would wear more lethery or chainmail armor, and sorcerers would wear robes, and the barbarian's armor may be a bit more open, he's a barbarian, after all. Why should they all need to wear heavy plate armor when only a few of them are heavy combat knights?
Last time I saw high level people, they all wore heavy plate armor. Even then, that's not the point. Light armor still looks the same type for all classes despite their type.

Its up to the person playing what kind of armor they want to wear, If you have a full plate mail, you sacrifice speed for better defense, if you wear a leather armor you sacrifice defense for faster speed. I think the armors should hold similar characteristics for each character class. Maybe smaller plates for smaller characters but that's about it.
I have a feeling the armor in D3 will be a lot more specific than the armor was in D2. IE each armor will look a little different when equipped rather than almost all heavy armor looking exactly the same.

I never saw a single high level without heavy armor. In fact, whenever I read a guide on how to make a char in DII, it says:
get as much STR as you need for best armor.
I don't think anyone cared about speed. Not with teleport anyway. Everyone was forced to wear heavy armor. Which looks stupid on some characters, personally.

Tal Rasha (looked like heavy armor to me) looked really good on sorceresses so I don't know.
I am not familiar with particular set names. Each char in DII had modes. The highest armor mode for each char was heavy plate which a normal sorc would never wear.

Then maybe the best answer is to get rid of teleport:D I really think teleport is what eventually fucked up D2, (in conjunction with enigma) it screwed the item market up. "Ooh look I can zip to the end of the game and get all the lootz" I think there are only 2 heavy armors in D2 plate mail and full plate mail, the rest are medium and light. If what you want is cooler looking armor I'm sure you will get your wish.
I believe they should do it as the makers of Rainbow 6: Vegas did it. You can choose your armor for that game and you can see how much protection and mobility that particular piece of armor offers. So when putting on a piece of armor it should either speed you up or slow you down depending on which armor you swapped it out for.
Unfortunately they'll probably do it the WoW way if they do it at all... Some classes can only wear specific armor types.
Edit: @Equinox - If you saw guides saying to throw in strength for armor requirements then the writer was a complete imbecile. If you saw high levels wearing heavy armor they were mostly likely retarded. The most popular armors for high levels were Dusk Shroud or Archon Plate. These were both light armors but Archon plate looks like a heavy armor when worn as it is a plate type armor but it is much thinner and lighter. They are popular because they don't need as much strength to use. You can ask Ferret he makes builds using no points in strength whatsoever.
in the gameplay it says that all armor in diablo 3 will be class specific. i think that means just how in D2 you could have assualt helms for barbs, or sphere globes for sorcs, i think ALL the armor in D3 will be like this, no 2 heros will look the same.

Actually, what I think they meant is that when you equip plate mail on a Barbarian it's going to look different than if you equipped the same piece of plate mail on the Witch Doctor. So the actual design of the plate mail will be class specific... not that all armor is going to be restricted to a single class.
i GUARANTEE that people will look more unique. it has pretty much been said that they will...i mean look at the boring plated helmet...then look at it on the barb...it doesn't look anything like the pic. I'm sure it wont be a spiky helmet on the witchdoctor...but rather a headdress like he wears.
i hope they still have SOME class specific (not too many though) items like in D2...id love to see some sweet looking robes for the magic class. i remember (its been years since ive played diablo 1) finding an awesome unique robe in diablo 1.
Hmmm, if this is the case, is that not the same thing we had with the previous two titles?
It is, but I think they were just highlighting the return of it rather than trying to hype it. I personally think that if it says 'leather' in the name, it should be brown and leather-like. Just my two cents.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
Yeah, I think that is true, too. I wish that the armor looked just like the pictures in Diablo 1 and 2 - some of those looked really cool! Instead, they were just blue or red or different colors of the same looking stuff, even if the picture was far different than the standard kind, you know?
Yeah, that kinda bugged me that unique items hardly looked anything like their artwork in the inventory. They were usually colorized versions of the basic items classes.
I would hope to expect that any unique items in D3 will more accurately resemble the artwork shown in the inventory.
Well if u play classic as a sorc u much rather have a light armor than heavy same goes for necros. U don't need high strenght for any item. Max 45 strenght if u use magefists 60 if frostburns. Many people have quilted armor just because it has good stats and doesnt' require much strenght. Quilted armors are also cheap to gamble.

Unfortunately, it looks as if the artwork in the inventory itself is now tiny and not very detailed.
I dont really care how the item looks in inventory.. I don't have inventory up all the time anyways. I much rather wanna see good looking items when I'm wearing them.
Armor in D2 had strength requirements, so if you felt like putting most/many of your points in strength and sacrificing other things like vitality, you could do so. This is part of what allowed for so much customizability. I hope they don't limit the armor choices simply based on class, but on necessity of skill points. Same thing with weapons. You needed dexterity, and strength, to use certain weapons, which only the mellee classes would logically put points into.. but if you wanted, you could still make a mellee sorceress (fun!).
I like the idea of being able to wear any type of armor you want given you have the requirements. It was something that made diablo a more enjoyable, sure there was class specific equipment that works for each class its made for but simplifying the game in choices is not something I would like to see myself.
The choice should be left to the players and not a design decision made in the mind set of realism, its a game after all and we should enjoy it.

That set made no sense- Tal Rasha didn't have heavy armor, he had robes. My god, bring back robes for the casters!
