Now I've already created a thread pertaining to gameplay, but this thread will be devoted to speculations for D3's gameplay and constructive criticisms of the previous Diablo games' gameplay.
To start off I would like to mention a new addition to the barbarians gameplay. The fury bar[globe]. If you have seen the gameplay trailer, you likely noticed the teal globe where the oldschool blue mana globe used to be. This is the fury bar. I welcome this addition to the barbarian as it will likely give way to more dimensional melee fighting and more tactical use of skills.
Unfortunately, there isn't much that we can take from the trailer in relation to spell-caster gameplay other than they still rely on mana and that there doesn't seem to be any cast time or channeling skills of any kind. I personally feel let down by this because after watching a few minutes of intense barbarian combat, and feeling a sense of deepened gameplay, I was introduced to the same thing I've played for eight years. Not to say that this won't work, but I would like to see depth along the lines of what can be accomplished with rage in melee classes. I believe that casting times, cooldowns, and possibly channeling spells could add some dimension to spell-casting.
I know that a lot of the ideas suggested are related to WoW, but when it comes to gameplay there is no doubt that WoW has more depth than Diablo 2, and it would not be the worst thing to take a thing or two from World of Warcraft in this particular segment.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?

Just a note, but spells with cast times, cooldown timers and channeling abilities are not intrinsic to World of Warcraft and have been in a number of games that I have played which came out long before WoW was even conceived. Most notably, EverQuest and Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard.

I know haha. But there is so much hate for WoW on these forums that I thought that I should get that out of the way before any discussion on the subject.

The question that needs to be asked is whether these things fit. Cooldowns, sure. We have skills that are on cooldowns in D1 and D2. We didn't really have spells with cast times persay, that is, a right click is all that was required although the casting animation may take time. Channeled spells don't exist and don't really fit with the streamlined approach of the game.
Fuck you! I like spamming my skills and spells, thank-ye-vury-much!
Get out of here with your World of Warcocks talk!

Blizzard is not responsible for the death and loss of your hardcore characters for any reason including Internet lag, bugs, Acts of God, your little sister, or any other reason whatsoever. Consult the End User License Agreement for more details. Blizzard will not, and does not have the capability to restore any deceased Hardcore characters. Don't even ask. La-la-la-la-la, we can't hear you..,

Instant cast spells are what Diablo is about.
Fair enough, but how do you propose adding depth to the gameplay? Do you feel it needs to be deepened?
And on a side note, the Witch Doctor spell 'Soul Harvest' seems to be a channeling skill of sorts.

I don't understand how cast times don't lend themselves to Diablo. I get that it is fast paced (hell I more then get it, I've logged dozens if not hundreds of hours on sorcs) but that doesn't mean that you can't throw in a powerful spell or two that works by cast time.

Cast time systems automatically = balancing work for the game to allow it to be usable (especially in single player play). In an overwhelming madhouse of power and combat like Diablo...it's just going to cause endless amounts of issues. This isn't a "wait and see" sort of action game. This is a know what the eff you're doing or die (preferrably asap) sort of rpg.
I don't see it that way. Especially the "know what the eff you're doing" part. It seems like any one with a keyboard and a face can play this game. Don't get me wrong, I love D2, but with the advancements made in RPG gameplay it would be inexcusable to not update spell-casting to have some strategic or tactical component to it or else we will just end up with keys stuck in our noses again.
EDIT: I think I left the "serious" part of the discussion at the door with this post. Excuse me, it's late

Play Hardcore D2...when your death counts for something. Few other RPGs require as much real-time skill and still work.

Channeling would indicate that a spell has damage that is done in waves, like Blizzard in WoW. Soul Harvest does not appear to do this because the effect is started immediately. The animation takes a while because it is part of the spell, however, like all spells in D1 and D2, they all have animations.
Depth in the Diablo universe consists of picking your fights. Early on the game is always easy. Later, unless you're a flavor of the month build/class, you'll have to pick your fights carefully.
Diablo isn't exactly a game that requires depth to have replay value nor is it a game that really requires depth. Things that slow the game down do just that; slow the game down.

I think the strategic component of spell casting got washed out with LOD. Before that you didn't have cast delays.. so now u just have 1 spell that u use (in most cases) and have your right button down and it casts it every now and then.
Before that you had the non delayed frost orb that cast speed was determined by ur cast rate. So you could do like 10 orbs in 1 second. Well this added strategic component, since orb had high mana cost ~60 at lvl 20 and its damage was a lot lower than now about 3 times lower so you had static field with it.. a really nice skill. Gather mobs throw 1 orb to slow them down and static them to about 25% hp throw couple of orbs to finish them.. I really liked this style you were always teleporting a lot and doing static throwing orbs.. (this also worked with blizzard and why not every other spelll too only frost ones had the slowing effect tho) there was a lot more action. I hope they go with this type of caster gameplay again.
It would be nice to have some spells with high cast time and some cooldown.. something massive aoe maybe. You spot a big pack of monsters and cast some aoe there and then go in with your regular spells.

Are you sure it's a rage globe? I saw stat points on some of the skills for both "fury" and "stamina". Fury wasn't previously in Diablo and stamina used to only be for running. Where are you getting that it's a "rage globe"? Is it something taken from WoW?
The WD seems to be a real crowd control type of class. Once you really start thinking about what he is capable of when using several skills in combination, it becomes clear that he will be an integral part of the game.

Where did you get this information from? The rage globe? It seems more like a mana globe to me. Proof please.
EDIT: I googled and searched the forums, you seem to be the only one thats talking about the rage globe. Therefore I assume you have no idea what you're talking about.
EDIT#2: Rewatched gameplay trailer and found out the globes were different colors xD.......................

It's not mana for sure.. it's different color than the witchdoctor has and regens very quick. There was some post that I didn't find anymore with screenshots of the skills and I think barbarian skills used Fury.
