Sonny, I pointed to the fact (before I edit the OP, mind you; no more WC/WoW talk here) that many people who play Diablo also played Warcraft just because it's another of Blizzard's great products, and that seeing Witch Doctor a lot in both WC3 and later also in WoW , we (or at least me) have the sensation that he is WoWish.
I know the expression wasn't flash news from WC3 to the Earth... and even disconsidering all that, give your personal opinion: what name pleases you more for a Diablo character?
a) The Witch
The Umbaru Witch
c) The Witch Doctor
d) insert other cooler name if you have any to suggest
Why must there be a "WoW rationale" behind every suggestion made to D3? Why can't we just say, collectively, that the name sucks? Period.
Witcher, Witchmaster, Witch; Anything's better than Witch Doctor. My rationale? I don't have one. It's purely preferential from my side. I think Witch Doctor sounds silly as hell and hardly fitting the character, or the universe.
Right, right, your argument is even better than mine. No problem there
No more WC/Wow bashing, just change the goddamn name Blizz, because it's silly, doesn't fit the dark Voodoo style, yada yada yada...
Witcher would instantly associate with the Sapkovsky Witcher. He used it most often. Witch sounds stupid because it's more of a female name. Wichmaster? WTF?
Witch Doctor is best. Not to mention that they do exist, unlike Witchers, Witches, and Witchmasters.
If you want things litteral, witch is much more associated to the european old ladies that dealed with herbs and stuff, as well as to the celt priestess woman known as wicca.
Nothing to do with voodoo shamans from African tribes - and the Witch Doctor is inspired on them to a good extent.
i agree with you just because blizzard came out with WoW before D3 dont mean it cant have some ideas of the game because it was popular with that one if D3 came out before WoW we would see the same mentality over that "wow, WoW looks like D3 its not suppose to be like that"
No more WoW talk ok? The name just doesn't sound good/fitting/whatever by itself, no blaming on WC/WoW anymore! The purpose of the thread is to see what people think of the name, of the possible changes, make suggestions, etc etc.
I'm just gonna come out and say it.....the least silly sounding name for a character of that ilk is.......uh oh....Shaman. But even blizzard knows enough to understand that if they did that, the heavens would fall for so many people. Dear god....the names of classes from WoW and diablo would be the same and we would get an online petition with 40k made up signatures to get rid of the character. So witch doctor wins by default due to the shitstorm that calling a tribal caster character a Shaman would bring about. It's a pity that people get so up in arms about two medieval fantasy games having similarities.
Maybe that's part of the problem. And Witchmaster? Never heard Witchmaster before? You need to get around.
Considering that most people here only played WoW and DII, while I played tons others, you need to tell someone else to get around.
It's not even in the Wiki. Witch Doctor is.

And contrary to popular belief, Witch is not a title exclusively used for females, except in the very modern sense.
Witches are mostly medieval products... witches are those that practice witchcraft. Mostly they were named as women. Either way, they don't exist.

If we want to drag this into the scene of internal realism, one could ask himself where the name Witch Doctor came from.
It's a healer that doesn't use traditional healing methods.

They don't actually titulate themselves as such
I really don't remember a time when Africans or Indians were given the chance to actually call something a name of their own.

Are there ever doctors in the world of Sanctuary? Are there enough for the connection between a spellcasting, flame-skull-throwing, shaman that displayed no healing or doctorish skills at all to be made? Doubtful.
As far as I am concerned, Sanctuary had a junglish area (Kurast), and that means witch doctors are possible in the form they were given us. Speaking of their spells, I doubt that ever had to do with lore.
Actually I love the name witch doctor and I think the name fits with both the game, lore, and style. If I can remember correctly in Act3 you had to kill those little and bothersom tiny people. I also believe that their was a creature that ruled over tham called a shaman aka WD but to ovoid people screaming WoW they called it the Witch Doctor.
Personally I dont see what all the fuss is about the name WD I think the only other names you could actually call this class is either Vodoo Doctor but it wouldnt work since people would end up calling VD . It also wouldnt work to call it a Shaman for the reason of WoW since people are so very well scared of WoW it seems.

Heh, I actually agree, shaman would be a far more befitting name and fit Diablo a fair bit better, but I am not really that fussed either way.
Except the part where Witches arn't like what we see in the Witch Doctor... Witch Doctor is a much more fitting name, and will keep from offending real life Witches... (Granted Blizzard has shown it doesn't mind offending Pagans, but still, that would just be a slap in the face...)
Well not all Pagans are alike. Remember, Pagan is a umbrella term refering mostly to the European-based religions such as Druidry and Asatru, so your Coven may think one way but that's not the only way to think, even for Pagans.

I think it is fine. I mean, it fits the character very well. And if it were simply "witch" then they would have to call the male warlock. Talk about WoW...

But his name... urgh. Call him just "Witch", or "Umbaru Witch". Using the word Doctor seems so silly and unfitting, imo...
To get a WoW WD out of there is pretty hard. I don't agree totally. The name is fine. Stop associating everything with WoW.
Sanctuary has jungles.
Azeroth has jungles.
OH NOES! ITS A PLOT TO MERGE THE WORLDS!!!

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
