I like my idea more - which is that you're only allowed to respec every 20 levels or so. Once you reach level 20, 40, or 60, an option pops up that allows you to respec, and you can either accept it or not. I like the idea of being able to respec if you mess up your character, but I also hate the idea of someone being able to change their character completely at later levels.
I think that this veers too much from the atmosphere of Diablo. Going from not being able to respec at all to not only being allowed to respec, but almost having it thrust on you. There needs to be a system to tax you for a respec via vendor, trade for an item that allows it, etc.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
I would be in favour if it was limited to similar distribution to what you had before... say you accidentally click a skill you don't want right next to one you do... I don't want to have to re0roll cause I miss clicked or accidentally double clicked....
So say you put 60 points in combat skills... and 20 in battle shouts... you can redistribute 60 in combat how you see fit and 20 in battle shouts.... but not change the order or start stacking passive abilities etc.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
seems viable but the only issue is, once a way to dupe/hack comes out for d3 that 'respecing' item will be duped to no end lol
there is always bugs when a game is released and lots of loop holes for hackers to use no doubt. but i think with the new battle.net blizzard is going to keep a tight watch on all those possiblities for duping and hacking. i had so many friends that played D2. lan cafes all day long for hours and hours. it all came to an end when poeple started fucking up the game with dupes and hacks. poeple just stopped wanting to play.

even though blizzard tries to keep a close eye on battle.net they can only do so much.. i'm not trying to be a downer or w.e but there will be so many people playing this game (especially for the game sizes, assuming it'll be d2 style) that it'll be hard to monitor all the hacks and such
but who knows? maybe the hacks/dupes wont be as prevalent as D2 and other games
whatever happens, technology advances, there will be no doubt that security issues will be as big of a problem as previous games.

Even so, when D2 came out Blizzard wasn't very concerned about these hacks. They had 2 guys working part time to make simple patches to delete things like white rings which if they had tried could have been dealt with on day 1.
WoW is a testament to Blizzard's ability to patrol their games and stop hackers. Obviously you can't expect this quality of hack control when it isn't pay 2 play, but it will definitely be better than D2.

First of hi everyone. This forum looks nice and clean. Much better then battlenet's who has been spammed to death atm. Ive always wanted to express why im in favor for respeccing and a way of implementation that i have not read elsewhere (next to gold which would be fine imo). So here goes nothing.
Ive played wow. With that out of the way lets continue. Even in wow (with the respec system in place) i would read up on my class. Id go to sites with builds, read what every little talent does at what level, read about the right items to go with that build etc. etc. I even decided beforehand what the most efficient way was to fill the tree (i.e. combat skills before utility skills etc).
[...]
Cheers
Or you could make it so every time you level up you can redistribute one skill point. Or maybe only at certain levels. The problem with the system you propose is that I don't think there should be an additional "experience" bar for something like respeccing, it sounds cluttered. This would also mean that once you got to high levels you would have less ability to respec your character because you will now be gaining levels much slower. This would preserve "definitive character builds" because higher level characters would pretty much be locked in to what they chose earlier on.
I guess there will be no way to dupe things in D3. It's something they hadn't thought of while building D2 so it was possible, but now they know ppl will try it, and generate UUIDs of all items or something smilar so that the servers know which items were dropped and which shouldn't exist.
there will always be a way, but don't get me wrong im not condoning it lol

You say you are opposed to grinding, but this system lends itself to a grind. What happens once you've reached a point in the game where leveling is optional (like your mid 80's in D2) and so demon slaying isn't necessarily how people spend their time. They may want a respec, but the only way to do so is to grind.
BTW, grinding really isn't the worst thing in the world. It provides a punishment for people that abuse certain aspects of the game. This would be one of those aspects. While you feel that doing research hurts the experience of the game by forcing you to unindulge yourself, the game designers implemented this into the game because they want it to have multiple dimensions. The research is a necessary part of being good at the game, and helps separate the less experienced players from the more experienced players.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
It's just a matter of game design and a little effort, nothing complicated.
If they want to prevent duping, they can do it. The server generates the loot and thus can identify what it created. Chars are stored on the server, too, so all they need to do is check the list of valid items against the list of items in accounts. GUIDs, a database and transactions (for trading), no magic in here.
The main reason dupes and other kinds of cheating are possible is that developers are not aware of possible attacks, which is clearly not the case with duping today.

There'd be some side quest that's out of the way and hard to find (like, if it was in D2, it'd be in Act 3, and it wouldn't show up on your quest log), and it's fairly difficult to accomplish. If you defeat it, then you have a choice to what reward you want. You can choose to get a tome of skills, which when used would allow you to respec ALL your skills (so if you were level 31, you'd get 31 respec points). However, you can only get this tome once per character - even if you do the quest again, or do the quest again in different difficulties. However, you can use the tomb more than once, so if you have other characters that have the tomb but don't need to respec, you can transfer it, or you could trade for it.
So every character could respec everything an average of once.
Also, you would not be allowed to respec in the middle of fighting.
And it's "possible" or "plausible," not "plossible."

thx for the spelling tip. the spell checker doesn't work so well on this site, and let's face it. i'm not too adept at spelling. ahh, the computer age. it gives us things like D3 but has turned a generation of children into spell check dependent fiends.
i sort of like your idea, but I think that it should only be accomplishable in Hell difficulty and disappear on use. It would also have to have a very high level of difficulty and not be able to be accomplished with a group.

Its a decent idea, but as some said, hacking and duping will make it into constant respecing...and personally i HATE the thought of being able to respec your char all the time...limited respecing could be ok...but deffinately make it hard and or limited to do.

I meant to say that it would disappear on use. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to get it earlier... like at least Nightmare difficulty (if there is Nightmare difficulty)

Duping tombs of respec wouldn't be half as imba as duping 1337 unique items. Duping is a separate problem that will hopefully be smaller in D3. Limit the duping as much as the respec!

I dont think any respecing should be allowed, except for in the case of mistaken skill points (i.e. you may "undo" your last skill point any time until you place the next one).
