I got this pretty simply idea from a post I saw on the official forums. Sorry, I don't have a link to it right now, but it isn't too long, so my short paraphrasing captures most of it anyways:P
An item that allows for respeccing. It would fit into the Diablo universe because as we all know, loot and random drops are a large part of the previous games. This item could be VERY rare and only drop off of high level 'act' bosses (depending on whether or not there are even acts) with a low drop rate. It would contribute to the economy and wouldn't be very abundant because they would be perishable on use.
Thoughts?

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
I actually kinda dig this idea. Call it something like 'Stone of Rebirth' and it allows a full respec. I do agree it would have to be very, very rare. The idea of having something like this as a quest reward isn't bad either IMHO, maybe once per difficulty a la imbuing?
I almost like that a bit more because it allows a flat / fair 3 (assumedly) respects per character, whereas through trading a drop would allow it as many times as you wanted. Either way would be interesting.
i just got a good idea, They should make it either like 2 "blizzardbucks" To respec or you can pay an "insane" amount of gold for it which would also give gold value (choose between skills or attributes)

using your idea how about.. you can respec a full skill tree (instead of the whole shebang)..assuming there is 3 skill trees and that there is 3 'stone of rebirth's', 1 per difficulty, so basically you get once chance to fully respec your character completely.. if not.. you can respec one part of the tree 3 diff times or whatever you please

or is that a bit farfetched haha
If we went with the quest option I think your idea of begin able to respec either stats or one skill tree is pretty genious, but that way you won't be able to respec one part. Unless, you can't repsec str/vitality/all that.

i had totally forgot about stats lol, i was just thinking the skills route
Good points. It would be good for the economy, adding a new level of value to gold in general, which we can probably all agree would be needed.
I can see it now, people saving up for respecs...not a bad idea at all.
Honestly, NPC services are the best thing for trade in the game. As long as there is something worthwhile to spend your money on in diablo III, you in theory should be able to trade anything for gold. Respecs wouldn't be enough, but expanding your stash size, adding weapon sockets, ect. You could charge for anything.
seems viable but the only issue is, once a way to dupe/hack comes out for d3 that 'respecing' item will be duped to no end lol
I think duping in D3 will have a lot more attention than D2 does presently. If there are, indeed, ways that people will be able to do this, I have no doubts that Blizzard will be spending more time addressing the issue.
I like my idea more - which is that you're only allowed to respec every 20 levels or so. Once you reach level 20, 40, or 60, an option pops up that allows you to respec, and you can either accept it or not. I like the idea of being able to respec if you mess up your character, but I also hate the idea of someone being able to change their character completely at later levels.

Not a bad idea, but who would choose not to respec? You don't lose anything if you choose yes even if your character is perfect

The only thing that I don't like about this implementation is that it supports a currency based economy. Not here to debate the benefits or draw-backs to this type of economy, just trying to keep this as true to the Diablo universe as possible, and the previous two games + xpac have been barter economies. The rarity of the item and its usefulness would make it valuable, so even if someone found two (very improbable, think the drop rate of a CoA) they would be compelled to sell the second one in order to buy gear and whatnot.

Reminds me of the Hellgate patch that dropped respec thingies at like 0.01%
Never played the post-beta Hellgate. Never felt like upgrading my graphics card

It could be made impossible to hold more than one? Or once another appears the other disappears.
I could even see it as a quest reward. Sort of like getting the additional skill points through quests, you could also get a respec.
ah that works too, nice lol
basically like the anni charm but used specifically for respecing

And it would also be a shitty reward, Considering how many quests in diablo II gave you skill points.
I still say charging gold would be the best implementation. Any useful service that costs gold is good for the economy.

Why waste your time re-distributing the skill / stat points if you're going to do them exactly the same?
