D3 certainly needs a unique gameplay. no point in reverberating back to an old way. But an open battle world would make it WoW. It needs something that makes it special. Maybe a combination of how Guildwars has the towns with everyone in them and a party window for going out into the world, with the classic D2 outside town world or something.

Like Hellgate:London, and Mythos? no thanks.

I havn't played Hellgate lond, or mythos, but in guild wars it works really well because you go out into the world with a party you choose but there needs to be a system where you can join games in progress...

Lol I was thinking that, they only really way I could see em pullin it off is like Guild Wars, and then I remembered how much Guild Wars sucked so I probably still wouldn't play D3.
And to expand on my opinion here, it's because the Towns are far too overpopulated (even with different channels). I don't want big massive towns (for all I know they might be in D3) but the point is, I don't want to be running back and forth for like 2 minutes going from one vendor to another to do things and squeezing my way through 100 others doing the same to just buy potions and repair my armor and get the next quest... ugh once again would just ruin the immersiveness of the Diablo universe.
an open world would really just be WoW with a diablo mod. and if thats how it were to go down i dunno if i could bring myself to buy it.
It wouldnt be diablo, almost at all, if its not rooms like in the first and second...
what some of you are asking for is almost an act of god... how can you expect to get an open world with random monster spawns, no monthly payment, and most importantly a storyline? you could possibly do the random spawns in open world but think about the number of monsters needed to hold true to the diablo style. not to mention how difficult it would be to pull off the diablo storyline in an open world style...
But then for many of us Diablo 2 is still not satisfactory.... There is something missing in the game play. Because D2 sucks sorry to say. It didn't give me the same excitement or the feeling of surrounded evil like D1 though I won't revert myself neither. Yes I believe that the Open World is outrages + its asking for a fee for maintenance which i'm not going to pull a dime for except to but the game and have fun. But Diablo 3 have to surprise us and I'm sure the creators are going find a way to make it unique and totally blow our minds. But so far D2 has let down many fans.
format should be similar to that of d2 with of course a few new changes =p
but in general a chatroom style with the characters and list of games showing would be cool
hovering the mouse over characters could show details and gamelistings could be described in more detail
also when you create a game you could specifiy what the primary purpose of that room is A1, A2, etc. or core quests, side quests, random quests, class specific quests and when choosing a game to enter you could click a drop down list of those categories.. thus sorting the rooms out..

You obviously don't know whats going on. Diablo II and (Lord Of Destruction) was one of Blizzard's greatest hits. That is why there are so many fans for the new Diablo. You're probably one of the few who think that Diablo II sucks.
I think it would be cool if it was a full world but with all the action content instanced. So you could do it solo/party (just like a WoW instance) max 5 people per imo. But it would be nice to spend more time playing the game than searching for them in chatrooms.
While i did vote for the original D2 format i believe that blizzard should increase the amount of people per game from 8 to 16. I also think that should implement trading city style rooms where there are no dungeouns, no monsters, just the main camp(s) and up to 32 players to trade with, plus the vendors to buy and sell to.

I don't like having so many people in one game. if you increase it to 8 or higher it gets way to hard to manage difficulty. It will either be incredibly easy or stupid hard. 5 is a good number imo, especially after seeing how fast paced it was in the gameplay video.
All i have to say to that is that in the previous game the world was pretty small. Assuming the game is as vast as they make it out to be then we should assume that diffuculty will be based on how many people per zone/per dungeoun/ per party.
There are some very creative ways to deal with scaling.
Why up to 16 per game? because i wrote 16 instead of 12. typo!:P
Anyways the increase in number is just to scale alongside the increase in scale(as far as the world goes, not everyone is always in one place unless it is the cow level haha).....assuming the world isn't the size of new jersey anymore........
Blizzard could have the regular rooms for questing/leveling/killingmonsters. While another room can be simpler with maybe just vendors in a town where people can trade.
Have a massive trade room which could hold more people in the game because there would be less things needing to be loaded.
yeah a large trade room with vendors would be good.
along with a dueling place maybe? I don't know how that would work out too well but they could have a shrine people go to in town to heal up (akara in act 1)
but anyways I say keeping it somewhat how it is now because like someone else said everyone would be at a boss (think runescape). with the exception of these special rooms.
OH and and if they have normal|nightmare|hell add little tabs at the top so we can scroll through the game lists because that gets annoying
Not really familiar with either one yet... eh... But surely "classic D2 multiplayer" sounds more promising.
Hate to break your mentality if there is one but... your kidding me right? old Diablo 2 format whats the need to have a new version of Diablo, then its a waste of time and well earn money to be dished into buying D3 to just play D2 all over again come on now - seriously. And D2 multi almost literally irritating tho.. the best about it is item hunting but that could ruin the fun seeing how people dupe items.. not cool. As a result BNet constantly starting new ladders besides the reason of updates as a chance for players start fairly the same. No need to buy D3 now if its just an image of D3 with D2 modes underneath dont think its considered brandnew game play. And also remember Diablo 2 was only big and thats the stats when bought not listing many after dissapointments...
But chances are it's just gonna be like good ole' classic Diablo. I'm also okay with that, but if I had a choice it'd be open-world.

But also, I see no reason TO change it. Seriously, it's fine as is.
